A note from Father Richard: SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER: The readings throughout the season of Easter are taken from the Acts of the Apostles, the First Letter of Peter, and the Gospel of John (the one exception is next Sunday, where the Gospel reading is Luke s road to Emmaus story). These readings inform us of how the earliest Christian communities structured their lives and built the church based upon their shared belief in the resurrection of Christ. In writing the Acts of the Apostles, Luke narrates events from the ascension of Jesus in Jerusalem (Acts 1) to Paul s imprisonment in Rome (Acts 28). This basically covers a thirty-five year span, from roughly AD 30 64. Scholars commonly date the composition of Acts to 85 AD; therefore, Luke is remarkably close in time to the events he is reporting in Acts. It should be noted, however, that Luke as an ancient historian does not write history in the modern sense of the word, ideally guided only by facts. Luke combines history and theology to create a narrative that not only informs his readers of the historical details but also forms his readers in the fundamentals of the faith. This is a delicate balance that Luke had mastered. Peace be with you. Three times in today s Gospel, Jesus speaks these words to his disciples. He knew they were in need of peace! We may wonder why, after his first greeting of peace, Jesus immediately showed the disciples the wounds of his crucifixion, still present in his now glorified body. Why would he speak of peace and then show them the scars from the violence of the cross? Perhaps it is because those wounds earned our forgiveness. And this forgiveness is our peace. We all need the peace that comes from being forgiven, and from forgiving. As the Father has sent me, so I send you, he told the disciples gathered in the room. We too are sent to be messengers of Christ s peace and mercy. Especially today, on this Sunday of Divine Mercy, may we accept from Jesus his promise of forgiveness. Then, we will truly be able to go in peace. FRANCISCAN CHAPTER: From May 5 to May 9 the Friars of the St. Anthony of Padua Province (Fr. Richard, Fr. Sam, and Fr. Germain belong to this Province) will meet together with the Friars of the Immaculate Conception Province in Buffalo, New York for a Chapter. A Chapter is a gathering of the Friars in which they meet to grow in fraternity, to pray, to reflect on the past few years and to plan the next years. At this Chapter the two provinces will become one province. We have been preparing for this union for the last four years. Our new Province will be called Our Lady of the Angels Province. The Friars will again be away from the parish during this time. We will have visiting priests from St. Vincent DePaul Seminary cover for the Friars. We will have the 8:00 AM Mass but will not have the 5:00 PM Mass during that week. We will have priests to celebrate funerals (if necessary), to cover the hospital and emergency calls. The second session of the chapter will be in August. At this session of the Chapter, plans and programs of the Province for the next four years will be discussed and new assignments will be decided. We ask that you pray for the Friars as they gather in Chapter and plan for the future. LITURGY OF THE HOURS: In the Roman Catholic Church priests are required by canon law to pray the entire Liturgy of the Hours each day while deacons are required to pray the morning and evening hours. The practice among religious communities varies according to their rules and constitutions. The Second Vatican Council also exhorted the Christian laity to take up the practice, and as a result, many lay people have begun reciting portions of the Liturgy of the Hours. From Monday thru Friday, we have Morning Prayer at 7:40 AM and Evening Prayer after the 5:00 PM Mass. Please consider joining us we have the books necessary for the prayers. CHARITABLE BEQUESTS: A popular way of making a Legacy Gift is to include a charitable bequest in your will or trust. A charitable bequest is a provision to leave all or part of your estate to a charitable organization such as your Parish. Charitable Bequests are relatively inexpensive and simple to incorporate into your will or trust. They provide flexibility as they are revocable and may be easily revised while you live should your circumstances change. Additionally, they are an effective estate planning tool. If your estate is subject to estate taxes, a charitable bequest will likely reduce or eliminate the taxes due. SUMMER MASS SCHEDULE: We start our summer Mass schedule next Sunday, the first Sunday of May, May 4. At that time our schedule will be: Saturday 4:00 PM and 5:45 PM; Sunday 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM, 12 Noon and 4:00 PM (Spanish). 4 St. Mark Raffle $1,000 Winning Numbers April 9, 2014 6-8-7 No Winner April 16, 2014 9-4-1 Congratulations John & Marie Cash
