PASTOR S COLUMN CONTINUING SUMMER WORK Summer may be a quiet time in some respects, but it is also a very busy time in many ways here at our parish. Summer is the time that major work takes place in our parish buildings. PARISH OFFICES/RECTORY As I mentioned in last Sunday's bulletin we are doing a good amount of work on the first floor of the rectory to update our parish offices and to make the parish offices more welcoming. We want to make a good first impression when people come to the office to conduct business or to meet with one of the priests or other members of the staff. Offices are being painted and new flooring is being installed. We are also wiring every floor of the building to accommodate a new phone system and also to provide better internet access throughout the facility. At the same time this work is being done, we are working in both the upper and lower schools. It is amazing how much work has already taken place since school ended. The work in the rectory/parish offices and in the schools is being done by the same firm who did such a great job last summer, namely, My Home Inspection & Construction Services Inc. of Brick Township, NJ. PARISH LIFE WORK Work is also continuing at the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. As Stephen Petrocelli Inc. is completing work on the first floor of the building, some Boy Scouts have been doing some volunteer work in the basement. Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 15, 2012 As his Eagle Scout Project, Sean Reilly is cleaning out the lower level of the building. It is amazing how much junk accumulates in parish buildings over the years. People are afraid to throw things out or they think something might be able to be used in the future so it is saved and of course, that saved item never sees the light of day again. Unfortunately, Sean and his fellow Boy Scouts have been working in the midst of the recent heat wave. SHRINE OF OUR LADY Some folks have inquired why the fountain in the outdoor shrine of the Blessed Mother is not in operation. We hope to have it working soon. There are problems that need to be addressed. The fountain has a pump and a filtration and chlorination system similar to that used for an outdoor swimming pool. The pump is broken. Considering the cost of repairs, it makes more sense for us to purchase a new pump. Also the lighting at the shrine is broken. The light fixtures that were installed were not waterproof. Over time, the fixtures have corroded. We are working on both the pump and the lighting. When the shrine was installed, no thought was given to the ongoing cost of maintenance and repair that such an outdoor structure would require. If anyone is interested in making a donation to help cover these costs associated with the Shrine of Our Lady that would be a wonderful blessing. If you are interested, just speak to me or send your donation in care of the parish office. SUNDAY EVENING MASS As you may remember the Parish Pastoral Council recently conducted a survey regarding a possible Sunday Evening Mass at our parish. The results appear on page 5 of this bulletin. I think you will find them interesting to read. I hope you are having a wonderful summer. For me, the days are passing by much too quickly! Love, Father Tom Iwanowski Sean Reilly, center, works with Brian and Mike, to remove the junk from the lower level of the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. You can see photos of some of the work taking place in our parish buildings by visiting our website sjcnj.org 3

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION FOR 2012/2013 TERM REGISTRATION ARE DUE NOW Current Students All of our currently registered students have already received their registration letters and forms. As we plan for the new term, we ask your cooperation by returning your family registration to The Religious Education Office as soon as possible. Since the stated due date of July 2 has passed, a late fee is imposed. First Grade Students In order to receive First Reconciliation and First Eucharist, a student must have attended first grade religion classes. Anyone who attends a non- Catholic School and is going into the 1 st grade in September of 2012 must register for Religious Education. New Students New Student Registrations are being accepted. To enroll in the Religious Education Program, your family must be registered parishioners of Saint Joseph Parish and present a copy of the child s Baptism Certificate. For information contact the Religious Ed Office (religioused@sjcnj.org) or (201-261-1144). Parish Registration All families enrolled in the Religious Education Program must be registered parishioners of Saint Joseph Parish. If you are not registered with the parish, please call the Rectory (201-261-0148) to speak with one of the priests and register. Volunteers Needed to Staff the Religion Classes Volunteers are the heart of the Religious Education Program. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With close to 900 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteer staff we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys working with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. If you would like further detailed information about volunteering, please contact the Religious Education Office at (201-261-1144). We invite you to visit the new Religious Education Website for news, schedules, and to download ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ 4 WHY I USE PARISH PAY by Edward Winkler I think that Parish Pay is the easiest and the most convenient way to support Saint Joseph Parish. Through Parish Pay you make your usual Sunday donation, plus the Archdiocesan assessments and all the special collections throughout the year, You have your choice of paying from a bank account or using a credit card. I like it for several reasons. First, I am not writing checks (usually at the last minute) and making sure I have the envelope and then leaving it on the kitchen counter when I leave for Mass. Second, it makes it easy to budget. When the donation amounts are entered for the year, I have my budget for Saint Joseph donations. Third, I have a record for tax purposes. It is quick, convenient, and I never need to worry about my regular support of Saint Joseph. (I cannot guarantee that using a credit card for contributing to our parish will get you to heaven, but it might give you enough points for a trip to Hawaii.) To find out more about PARISH PAY go to our parish website (sjcnj.org) and click on NEWEST NEWS. When signing up for ParishPay, always remember that you are making a monthly contribution. If you wish to contribute $20 per week, make a monthly contribution of $80. For a weekly contribution of $30, make a monthly contribution of $120 per month. If you wish to give $50 per week, make a monthly contribution of $200. Since some months have 5 Sundays, you may want to increase your monthly contribution to account for that. Remember to enter the MONTHLY AMOUNT in the box that says REGULAR DONATION. LEGION OF MARY THIRD SATURDAY PRAYER JULY 21 IN MARY S CHAPEL All are invited to join the Legion of Mary after the 8:30 Mass in Mary's Chapel, in the Lower Church on Saturday, July21, for the Third Saturday Prayer. TARGET YOUTH GROUP THURSDAYS AT 7 PM Teens in high school are invited to our weekly Youth Group night held in the Rectory Basement Meeting Room. Each week, we gather to hang out, play pool, and listen to music. We also take time to share our faith, pray for one another, and prepare for Mass by listening to the readings for the upcoming Sunday. Each meeting allows us to grow closer as friends and followers of Jesus. We hope to see you there.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL REPORT SUNDAY EVENING MASS IN PEW SURVEY RESULTS Several weeks ago, the Parish Pastoral Council conducted an in pew survey at our Sunday Masses to better determine interest in a possible Sunday evening Mass at Saint Joseph Parish. We received 521 responses. Thank you for your participation! The survey asked three questions. Question One Would you be interested in attending a Sunday evening Mass at Saint Joseph Parish? Question Two If so, do you think you would make this Sunday evening Mass your regular Mass? Question Three Would you be interested in serving on the liturgical team (readers, servers, greeters, ministers of Holy Communion, singers, musicians) for a possible Sunday evening Mass at St. Joseph Parish? THE SURVEY RESULTS 176 people have NO interest in a Sunday Evening Mass. 183 people said they had SOME interest in a Sunday Evening Mass, but they would NOT make that Mass their regular Sunday Mass. 43 people said they have some interest in Sunday Evening Mass, and MIGHT make a Sunday Evening Mass their regular Mass. 93 people said YES they had an interest in a Sunday Evening Mass and they would make this Mass their regular Sunday Mass. 20 of those people said they had an interest in serving as a liturgical minister at that Mass. That is, they would be willing to be a reader, greeter/usher, server, minister of Holy Communion, or musician/singer. 26 people said they would be willing to come to a Sunday Evening Mass if they are scheduled to serve as a liturgical minister, but they would not make this Mass their regular Sunday Mass. SUMMARIZING THE RESULTS: We have 176 responding they have NO INTEREST in a Sunday Evening Mass. We have 252 responding they have SOME LIMITED INTEREST in attending a Sunday Evening Mass. We have 93 people responding they have a DEFINITE INTEREST in attending a Sunday Evening Mass. continued on next column Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 15, 2012 5 THE NEXT STEP The Parish Pastoral Council's next step is to contact the 46 respondents who expressed an interest in perhaps serving as a liturgical minister at a Sunday evening Mass. The Council plans to invite these people to a meeting sometime in September to discuss what would be involved in serving as a liturgical minister at Mass. Before any final decision is made about a Sunday Evening Mass, we need to have an adequate number of people to serve as liturgical ministers at such a Mass. Further information will follow in future bulletins. As always comments for the Parish Pastoral Council may be emailed to (PastoralCouncil@sjcnj.org) or sent by US mail (Pastoral Council, 105 Harrison Street, New Milford, NJ 07646). ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Mark Chapter 6 verses 7-16 When you get ready to go on vacation, your parents pack the car with everything you need for your trip. In this week s Gospel, Jesus sends the disciples out on a mission. He tells them not to pack anything except a walking stick. Even though they do not understand, they obey Jesus and go off on their mission, two by two, to help people in nearby towns and to teach them about God. Jesus also asked them to heal the people who were sick. Jesus told the disciples that God would provide everything they needed for their mission. Just as your parents take care of you and provide everything you need for your vacation, God gives you everything you need for life. God helps you to do the right thing. God will help you to forgive those who hurt you, to be friendly to those who are lonely, to be kind to your brothers and sisters and to other children, and to be obedient to your Mom and Dad. Those who are close to God receive the strength they need to do good! Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee Jesus sent the disciples out two by two so they could help one another as they told people about Jesus. MISSION OF THE WEEK Choose one friend who needs to hear about God s love. Maybe they can go to church with you. Jesus is our friend and protector. He will show us the way when we meet people who do not believe in him. 6
