Congregation Beth David of Narragansett and South County Hebrew School A Message from Ethan Adler, Our Spiritual Leader Want to Participate? High Holidays 2012 5773 The High Holy Days represent a time of reflection. They allow us to come face-to-face with our strengths and weaknesses, our successes and failures, our gains and our losses. These special days give us an opportunity to restart unfinished business, to rediscover who we are, and to renew hopes and dreams. These Ten Days of Awe and retrospection open the doors of our souls to the possibilities that we are imperfect, limited, and flawed. Yet they also underscore the notion that we are special, unique, and irreplaceable. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur remind us that we are a community, sustained by members of the community, responsible for those in the community. These holidays serve as a banner to the ideal of community responsibility that we are all responsible for one another. May you all enjoy a holiday season that brings you closer to your family, friends and community, closer to the traditions of our people, and closer to your own existence. And may your journey be paved with blessings, with health and with peace. Food Donations Unfortunately, all food banks are struggling to meet high demands during these difficult economic times. We encourage you to bring whatever non-perishable foods you can to any of the High Holiday services where we will collect and later distribute your donation. Here s how! In search of Torah and Haftorah readers: Get into the spirit of the High Holidays by reading a spiritual passage. CBD has a high holiday tradition where members read the Torah and Haftorah portions for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. No experience necessary - just a desire to learn. If you are interested, and would like more information about this divine opportunity, please contact Ethan Adler at eadler3@cox.net. Ethan will be very happy to help you prepare for a reading. In search of Volunteers: Preparing for the CBD High Holiday services takes a lot of People Power. In the past our community has been blessed with many who volunteer their time to make the High Holiday services spiritual and inspirational. Once again we are asking for your help. Many hands make light work and we need LOTS of volunteers to move items from CBD to the Bonnet Shores Community Center (BSCC), to help set up at the BSCC and clean up after the services. We also will need volunteers to distribute tickets and to greet people as they enter the BSCC. Please consider volunteering to help with one of the many things that need to get done. You will be doing a mitzvah for the CBD community. Email Shelley Parness at shelleyparness@verizon.net and let her know how you can help. We also will be collecting non-perishable food for the Kosher Food Bank (donations must be kosher). Non-kosher items will be donated to the Johnny Cake Center. Paste icopy ad here

Page 2 Ticket Information Members who have met their CBD financial obligations, will receive their High Holiday tickets in the mail at the end of August. Your tickets include children younger than 18 years old who live with you and children between the ages of 18 and 25 who are full time students whose permanent residence is with the Member(s). Members may pay their CBD financial obligations and pick up High Holiday tickets at the Center, 375 Kingstown Rd, Narragansett (the Rotary) on the following dates and times: Sunday, September 9, 2012 9:00 a.m. to Noon Wednesday, September 12, 2012 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Guests who are not Associate Members of Congregation Beth David (formerly referred to as Summer members) may attend High Holiday services as guests of CBD members for a fee of $100 provided the guest retains another synagogue affiliation. Yizkor Memorial Book We will be distributing a memorial booklet for Yizkor services on Yom Kippur and other Yizkor services held during the year. If you would like the name of a loved one to appear in the memorial booklet, please complete and return the Memorial Pledge form included in this newsletter along with your donation no later than August 27, 2012 Children s High Holiday Experience Children in grades Pre-K thru 7 are invited to join us for special High Holiday services designed for children. All childrens services will be held at the Center, 375 Kingstown Rd. Narragansett (at the Rotary). Please see the enclosed flyer for times. These child-friendly services will include familiar prayers, stories, holiday discussions, and the blowing of the Shofar. On Rosh Hashanah, there will also be appropriate snacks. Everyone is invited, there is no cost, and all families of the community are welcome to join us.
