GEORGE The Local Troops of Saint George, Troop 1571, based at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe is welcoming new members. Chartering begins in September and is a great time to join. The Troops of Saint George is a Catholic Father Son Outdoor Apostolate where fathers teach their sons virtue, manly skills, and love for outdoor recreation. Sons must be ages 6-17 and must be practicing the Roman Catholic Faith and fathers participation is required. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month and Troop fathers plan monthly recreation activities including archery, rock climbing, repelling, canoeing, camping, hiking, biking, woodworking, rocket building and much more. If you are interested in more information on the Troops of Saint George Catholic Father Son Apostolate, contact Troop Captain Steve Doll. Sdoll@guadalupeshrine.org Parati Semper! SAINT JAMES THE LESS BIBLE STUDY The Saint James Bible Study group has taken on a project thanks to the video series Catholicism: The Pivotal Players by Bishop Robert Barron. After studying Saint Francis, who was of the mendicant order, we learned the friars at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse are also mendicants. Mendicant Friars are members of those religious orders which, originally, by vow of poverty renounces all proprietorship not only individually but also (and in this differing from the monks) in common, relying for support on their own work and on the charity of the faithful. Hence the name of begging friars. The members of the Bible study decided to take up a collection and purchase groceries for them. Our first collection was $945.00 and we were able to purchase a grocery cart full of meats, vegetables, fruits and anything we could think of that they could use! Our second collection was over $600 and with that we have been able to keep them in supply of fresh food well over the summer and into the fall. The members have truly been blessed by this activity and consequently the Saint James Bible Study Group has become well known at the Shrine! We are planning on keeping this an ongoing project for our group. If anyone in the parish would like to donate to this cause, please send your offering designated for the Friars of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe/Saint James Bible Study. The Bible Study meets on Monday nights from 6:30 8:30 p.m. in Murphy Hall. Our new class, David, the King, also by Bishop Robert Barron, will begin on September 17 th. We offer bible studies from September to May. For more information call Donna in the religious education office at 608-782-7557

ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC The annual parish picnic will be held Saturday, September 15th at Copeland Park starting at 3:30 pm. Food will be served after 4:30 pm Mass. This year we will be using the small shelter and its kitchen. More details regarding the picnic will follow as we get closer to the date. Tickets will be available after all Masses, on September 1 and 2; 8 and 9 and in the parish office. If you are interested in helping out with the event please email Curt Riley at criley4147@charter.net We will need help with set up beforehand and with clean-up afterwards as well as with taking tickets and serving food during the event. Many hands make light work! So we look forward to hearing from you! Thank you! HOW DO WE CHOOSE WHICH HYMNS TO SING DURING THE LITURGY? Sacred music is to be considered the more holy the more closely connected it is with the liturgical action, whether making prayer more pleasing, promoting unity of minds, or conferring greater solemnity upon the sacred rites. 65 This holiness involves ritual and spiritual dimensions, both of which must be considered within cultural context. The ritual dimension of sacred music refers to those ways in which it is connected with the liturgical action so that it accords with the structure of the Liturgy and expresses the shape of the rite. The musical setting must allow the rite to unfold with the proper participation of the assembly and its ministers, without overshadowing the words and actions of the Liturgy. The spiritual dimension of sacred music refers to its inner qualities that enable it to add greater depth to prayer, unity to the assembly, or dignity to the ritual. Sacred music is holy when it mediates the holiness of God and forms the Holy People of God more fully into communion with him and with each other in Christ. Starting this weekend, you will find a booklet called Supplemental Hymnal for Ordinary Time in your pews. We will still predominately use the Lumen Christi Hymnal. However, with it only containing 170 hymns, it can be limiting when trying to make sure each week s hymns contain the necessary ritual and spiritual dimensions. These pieces have been gathered from multiple Catholic hymnals; many will be very familiar to you and the rest will be easy to learn. The booklet starts at number 300 so it will be easy to know which book to use when the numbers are listed on the board. May we continue to grow in holiness and closer to God through the use of Sacred Music in liturgy! Peace, Georgia Stockman MUSIC NOTES *Definitions found in Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship which was developed by the Committee on Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). 2007.

St. Bernard s Homily: His Mother stood by the Cross. The Martyrdom of the Virgin Mary. The martyrdom of the Virgin is set forth both in the prophecy of Simeon and in the actual story of our Lord s passion. The holy old man said of the infant Jesus: He has been established as a sign which will be contradicted. He went on to say to Mary: And your own heart will be pierced by a sword. Truly, O blessed Mother, a sword has pierced your heart. For only by passing through your heart could the sword enter the flesh of your Son. Indeed, after your Jesus who belongs to everyone, but is especially yours gave up his life, the cruel spear, which was not withheld from his lifeless body, tore open his side. Clearly it did not touch his soul and could not harm him, but it did pierce your heart. For surely his soul was no longer there, but yours could not be torn away. Thus the violence of sorrow has cut through your heart, and we rightly call you more than martyr, since the effect of compassion in you has gone beyond the endurance of physical suffering. Or were those words, Woman, behold your Son, not more than a word to you, truly piercing your heart, cutting through to the division between soul and spirit? What an exchange! John is given to you in place of Jesus, the servant in place of the Lord, the disciple in place of the master; the son of Zebedee replaces the Son of God, a mere man replaces God himself. How could these words not pierce your most loving heart, when the mere remembrance of them breaks ours, hearts of iron and stone though they are! Do not be surprised, brothers, that Mary is said to be a martyr in spirit. Let him be surprised who does not remember the words of Paul, that one of the greatest crimes of the Gentiles was that they were without love. That was far from the heart of Mary; let it be far from her servants. Perhaps someone will say: Had she not known before that he would not die? Undoubtedly. Did she not expect him to rise again at once? Surely. And still she grieved over her crucified Son? Intensely. Who are you and what is the source of your wisdom that you are more surprised at the compassion of Mary than at the passion of Mary s Son? For if he could die in body, could she not die with him in spirit? He died in body through a love greater than anyone had known. She died in spirit through a love unlike any other since his. Bernard of Clairvaux on the martyrdom of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross her heart is pierced by a sword as Simeon predicted. This excerpt from a sermon by St. Bernard of Clairvaux (Sermo in dom. infra oct. Assumptionis, 14-15: Opera omnia, Edit. Cisterc. 5 [1968}, 273-274) Devotion to Our Lady's Seven Sorrows Devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows became a standard devotion in the Church around the 14th century. It was revealed to St. Bridget of Sweden (1303-1373) that devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary's Seven Sorrows would bring great signal graces. The devotion consists in praying seven Hail Mary s while meditating on the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Mary, in a unique way, willingly suffered alongside her Divine Son as he gave his life to save the world, and she felt the bitterness of his passion as only a mother can. This devotion is especially remembered during September, the Month of Our Lady of Sorrows (the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is September 15th), and during the season of Lent. The Seven Sorrows of Mary: 1. The Prophecy of Simeon (Luke 2:34-35) 2. The Flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-21) 3. The Loss of Jesus for Three Days (Luke 2:41-50) 4. The Carrying of the Cross (John 19:17 5. The Crucifixion of Jesus (John 19:18-30) 6. Jesus Taken Down from the Cross (John 19:39-40) 7. Jesus Laid in the Tomb (John 19:39-42)
