Service for the Lord s Day May 27, 2018 Trinity Sunday/Hymn Sing 9:00 a.m. Prelude God of Grace arr. Paul Manz Festive Gloria Aaron David Miller * Call to Worship Come, let us sing to our God; Let us shout with joy to the rock of our salvation. Let us come into God s presence with thanksgiving; and make a joyful noise with songs of praise! It is good to give you thanks, O Triune God; to sing praises to your name, O Holy One; to declare your steadfast love both day and night, to the music of the lute and harp and lyre. Let us worship God. * Opening Prayer (inspired by Psalm 92, Psalm 95, and Psalm 19:14, by Joanna Harader, posted on the Spacious Faith blog) Holy, Creating, Creative God, we sing from the depths of our sorrow. We sing from the abundance of our joy. We sing in voices separate and unique. We sing with one voice as your body. May the words of our mouths, whether in speech or song, and the meditations of our hearts, whether in prose or poetry, be pleasing in your sight. Amen. HYMNS OF PRAISE * Hymn 35 (Stanza 3) Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty, LOBE DEN HERRN Praise ye the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! Hymn 634 To God Be the Glory TO GOD BE THE GLORY To God be the glory; great things he has done! So loved he the world that he gave us his Son, who yielded his life an atonement for sin, and opened the life-gate that all may go in. (refrain) Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the earth hear his voice! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord; let the people rejoice! O come to the Father through Jesus the Son, and give him the glory great things he has done! Great things he has taught us; great things he has done, and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son; but purer and higher and greater will be our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see. (refrain) Hymn 625 (Stanzas 1 & 4) O Lord My God HOW GREAT THOU ART O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy power through-out the universe displayed: 4
(refrain) Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to thee: How great thou art! How great thou art! When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take, me home, what joy shall fill, my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim, My God, how great thou art! (refrain) Hymn 610 (Stanzas 1, 4 & 5) O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing AZMON O for a thousand tongues to sing my dear Redeemer s praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of God s grace! My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of thy name. To God all glory, praise, and love be now and ever given by saints below and saints above, the church in earth and heaven. Hymn 611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee HYMN TO JOY Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love! Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day. Prayer for Illumination All thy works with joy surround thee; earth and heaven reflect thy rays; stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee. Mortals, join the happy chorus which the morning stars began. Love divine is reigning o er us, joining all in heaven s plan. Ever singing march we on-ward, victors in the midst of strife. Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life. Scripture Reading Ephesians 5:15-20 Pew Bible (NT) p. 194 HYMNS OF REFLECTION Hymn 688 (Stanza 1) Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart MORECAMBE Spirit of God, descend upon my heart; wean it from earth; through all its pulses move; stoop to my weakness, mighty as thou art, and make me love thee as I ought to love. Hymn 693 (Stanzas 1 & 3) Though I May Speak GIFT OF LOVE Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire, and have not love, my words are vain, as sounding brass, and hopeless gain. Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control; our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship, and are freed. 5
Hymn 821 (Stanza 1) My Life Flows On HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING Hymn 819 (Stanza 1) Be Still, My Soul FINLANDIA Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side. Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain. Leave to thy God to order and provide, who through all changes faithful will remain. Be still, my soul: thy best, thy heavenly Friend through thorny ways leads to a joyful end. Hymn 803 (Stanzas 1 & 3) My Shepherd Will Supply My Need RESIGNATION My shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is his name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed, beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake his ways, and leads me, for his mercy s sake, in paths of truth and grace. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may your house be my abode, and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come; no more a stranger, or a guest, but like a child at home. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 6
Sharing of Our Gifts and Offerings HYMNS OF THANKSGIVING Hymn 839 (Stanzas 1 & 3) Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine! ASSURANCE Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of his spirit, washed in his blood. This is my story; this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story; this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Perfect submission, all is at rest; I in my Savior am happy and blest, watching and waiting, looking above, filled with his goodness, lost in his love. This is my story; this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long; this is my story; this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long. Hymn 661 (Stanza 1) Why Should I Feel Discouraged?
