ANTHONY BARRATT Pastor DEACON RICHARD WASHBURN Deacon REV. WINSTON BATH Pastor Emeritus

ORDINARY TIME 20 TH SUNDAY YEAR A SALVATION OPEN FOR ALL ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU PERSIST! The Gospel (Matthew 15: 21-28) recounts yet another very human encounter with Jesus, one that we can readily identify with. A desperate mother approaches Jesus because her daughter is in great need. She will do anything for her daughter and despite being seen as a pest, she will not be deterred. Even worse, when Jesus seems to be stern with her and seems to refuse her request not once, or twice but three times, she still persists and so her prayer is answered. To savour the many layers and richness in this moving and human encounter, we need to step back a little and look at all our readings In the first reading, we hear the most wonderful prophecy from Isaiah (Isaiah 56: 1, 6-7) promising that God s justice will be revealed and His salvation will come, even to those who are not part of the chosen people. God s love will not be bound by any sort of boundary! In fact, this universality of God s love is a frequent theme of this part of the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. So much so, that we use it frequently during the season of Advent when we focus upon the coming of the Messiah for everyone. Our psalm (Psalm 67) takes up this theme too, as it sings that all nations should be glad and exult and all peoples can give praise to God; not just a select few. Normally, the second reading at Mass on Sundays follows its own cycle and so is not necessarily connected with the other readings. This Sunday however, the second reading (Romans 11: 13-15, 29-32) very much ties in with the other passages from Scripture. We continue to hear from St. Paul s letter to the Romans (written, scholars think around 56-58 AD to the early church in the imperial capital of Rome). St. Paul writes of his mission to bring the Gospel to all nations, including the gentiles. God s gifts, he continues, are irrevocable; but they are also given to all, especially God s gift of mercy. Again, God will not be not bound by boundaries! All this helps us to have a better understanding of that encounter between Jesus and the Canaanite woman. Incidentally, have you noticed how often evangelization in the Gospels (people coming to faith and to a love of Jesus) happens when they meet and experience Jesus. Yes, Jesus does speak to the crowds, but often he has these life-changing encounters with one or a few people. Perhaps then, this is a great model for evangelization today. Yes, we need programs and courses, but often becoming disciples and being disciplemakers happens in and through encounters. Things such as praying, sharing a faith story or just listening. In our Gospel then, there is a wonderful dynamic at work and one that gives us a great model or pattern. First of all, we see that God s love and mercy is inclusive and not exclusive; not bounded but boundless, not merited but gratuitous. We probably know this already, so what else can we discover? Perhaps the Canaanite woman can help us to discover another layer in our Gospel story. God s love and mercy are indeed boundless and inclusive; but sadly, we can put boundaries around it or make it exclusive. It is rather like the air that is all around us and yet we can chose to hold our breath and refuse to breathe.

A Note from Rita Dear Parishioners: As you well know, our Choir is a vital part of our liturgy and worship. Presently we are seeking new members to sing at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sundays, mid-september to mid-june. If you can carry a tune, we really need your help. Please give this ministry some serious thought. Rehearsals are after Mass, thereby eliminating any extra trips during the week. The more singers we have participating, the more leeway we have to insure free weekends for those who need to be away, but still allowing for a goodly number to sing at Mass. If you have any questions or concerns, please see me after Mass, or give me a call at 851-7393 or feel free to speak with any choir member. Blessings, joy, and fulfillment are guaranteed! Most sincerely, The sacraments are wonderful gifts from God to us. Through outward, visible signs; the sacraments are channels of God s love and mercy and so they draw us in to the life of the Trinity. They therefore also continue the saving mission and ministry of Jesus Christ in and through His body, the Church. Below is some information on how to make contact regarding the celebration of the sacraments. BAPTISM: Congratulations! If you would like to arrange preparations and a date for Baptism, please contact the Parish Office. RCIA: For those enquiring about the Catholic Faith or wishing to complete their sacraments: welcome! Please contact the Parish Office and we will be very glad to help you further. RECONCILIATION: Celebrated on Saturdays 2.30-3.45 pm in Hudson, before and after Masses in Germantown, or at anytime by appointment. (Note: it is best to call ahead first to check on the availability of a priest) ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Priests regularly visit the hospitals, nursing homes and the homebound. Please do contact the Parish Office if you or someone you know is in need of the anointing of sick. MARRIAGE:Congratulations! So that proper arrangements (paperwork, preparations etc.) can be made, please contact the Parish Office or Fr. Anthony at least six months before the desired date.
