Archdiocese of Detroit St. John s Deaf Center Our Lady of Loretto West Detroit Catholic Deaf Catholic Deaf Newsletter Volume 37 Issue 2 www.sjdc-oll.org February 2018 Dear Friends, Happy early St. Valentine s Day to all of you! Many people tend to think this day to be for lovers only. For me, it helps me to remember all people I love dearly. I thank God for them because they are His gift to me. On that special day, I invite you to spend ten minutes thinking about people who mean much to you and pray for them. A friendly reminder: Lent begins on February 14. We will have two Ash Wednesday Masses: 12 PM at OLL and 7 PM in the chapel at St. John s Deaf Center. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, Catholics between the ages of 18-59 are to fast by having one full meal or two small meals. All Catholics 14 years or older must not eat meat on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays during Lent. Lent is wonderful time for us deepen our faith and relationship with God, which in turn helps us to love other people more. During this holy time of the church year, all Christians are invited to pray more, to discipline themselves through fasting, and to help other people especially the poor and sick. Also, all Catholics are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). Early announcements: On March 11, we will have Bring Your Friend to Mass Day - at both Our Lady of Loretto s and Holy Innocents. Why? For three main reasons: A. There are many Deaf Catholics in Detroit area who told me they wanted to go to Mass on regular basis but never got around to developing this habit; B. it is never easy being the new kid on the block. This expression means it is hard to feel motivated to attend a large gathering of people who are mostly strangers. It would be easier to go with someone they know. Then they will feel more confident and comfortable coming to our church by themselves next time; C. Before Jesus ascension to Heaven, He instructed his followers to tell other people about Him. Likewise, Jesus wants us to invite other people, including those who are not Catholic, to our church. On April 21, we will have a pilgrimage to two churches: Shrine Chapel of Our Lady of Orchard Lake in Orchard Lake and Felician Sisters Motherhouse Chapel in Livonia. As a seminarian, I often prayed at the Shrine Chapel of Our Lady of Orchard Lake, which is right next to Ss. Cyril & Methodius Seminary. This place, where the shrine and seminary along with St. Mary s Preparatory - a college prep, all-boys high school are located, is very beautiful. The motherhouse chapel is also very beautiful. Have a blessed and holy Lent! Yours in Christ, Fr. MD

When my arms cannot reach people who are close to my heart, I always hug them with my prayers. This is a Hug, from me to you, to let you know I m thinking of you. I love You forever and ever. Amen Mission Statement of St. John s Deaf Center & Our Lady of Loretto West Detroit Catholic Deaf: We strive to support a ministry where all Deaf individuals are invited to meet Jesus Christ and participate in the life of the Catholic Church using American Sign Language. We welcome everyone, including our hearing brothers and sisters, who want to experience the richness of our Deaf culture as well as deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer, service, and the Sacraments. St. Jerome Emiliani (February 8th) Talks to Us Be at peace with your soul, then heaven and earth will be at peace with you. Fiat! Reflections February 2018 Half-way through this month, Christians throughout the world will begin the holy season of Lent. This period of 40 days is a time that God desires to give us abundant grace. What is grace? Grace is the life of God; grace is the breath of God in our spiritual lungs in order that we can live in a way that pleases God. The Catholic Church encourages us to choose some way that we can fast, give alms, and pray during Lent. Watch for more explanations of each of these disciplines. A discipline is an activity or exercise that develops or improves a skill. You might have a discipline of brushing your teeth two times a day, or going to Mass on Sundays. We all can become more disciplined. Resisting the second-serving of chocolate cake. Resisting the mean comment and replacing it with a prayer for the person. Not buying the coffee and saving the money to donate for poor people. Discipline helps us remember that Heaven is our true home, and we want to become like Jesus while we live on Earth. Stay tuned to announcements at Church, the website and Facebook group posts for more information about events during Lent. We have exciting new opportunities to offer you to grow in prayer. God always invites you to come. We invite you to come. And God always allows us to decide; He doesn t force us to do anything. That is part of discipline. What will we choose to do with our time, our skills, our money? My prayer for all of us as we prepare for Lent to begin (February 14 is Ash Wednesday) is that our hearts will be open and that we will discipline our minds and our bodies so that our spirits can unite with God as He draws us close to Himself, as He loves us, as He heals us. I look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming events! Come, Holy Spirit, prepare us for the disciplines of Lent that our hearts are open to Your graces! Amen. Catholic 101 Class by Fr.
