First Presbyterian Church For Christ in the Heart of Charlotte Founded in 1821 Order of Worship Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost August 5, 2018 11 a.m. You are invited to use the time before the service to prepare your heart and mind for worship. In consideration of others, please silence your cell phones. Preparation Prelude Plein jeu and Tierce en Taille François Couperin Words of Welcome Choral Call to Worship Adoration The Reverend Katherine Kerr arnsberg God, reveal your presence; gladly we adore you, and with awe appear before you. Holy is your temple; all within keep silence; humbly bow with deepest reverence. You alone now we own as our God and Savior. Praise your name forever. *Hymn No. 610 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing azmon

Large-print hymnals and Bibles are available. Please let an usher know if you would like one. We believe that God put the wiggle in children, and all are welcome in worship regardless of their ability to sit still. If you d like to step out of the sanctuary with your child, please feel free to visit the chapel (to the right of the sanctuary) where the service is streaming. Call to Confession Prayer of Confession All: Confession The Reverend Katherine Kerr Holy God, we confess that we struggle with self-control. We say, all things in moderation, and then we spend more money than we make, we give more attention to our phones than to our loved ones, and we stuff ourselves with food and our closets with things. Even as we try to practice self-control in our words and actions, we often wonder if it s worth the effort. When we are successful in self-discipline, we admit that we can become overly proud of ourselves and forget how dependent we are on you. So help us, O God, to know when to say yes and when to say no. Give us the strength and the discipline we need to live in a way that glorifies you. One: In silent prayer, let us confess to God the things we choose not to speak aloud. Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 581) gloria patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. First Church does not meet during the summer. Children in kindergarten and above are encouraged to participate in the full worship service, and care for younger children is available in the nursery. Children in kindergarten and above are encouraged to remain in worship. Younger children may go to the nursery. In my trials, Lord, walk with me; when my heart is almost breaking, Lord walk with me. When I m in trouble, Lord, walk with me; when my head is bowed in sorrow, Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me. Scripture Matthew 4:1-11 pew Bible pg. 3 The 11 a.m. service is televised over WSOC-TV, Channel 9 this morning and streamed live at www.firstpres-charlotte.org. Sermon Fruits of the Spirit: Self-Control The Reverend Pen Peery *Hymn No. 783 When We Are Tested sung to the tune slane

Response *Affirmation of Faith (from A Declaration of Faith, Chapter 9) Christ calls us to live in the presence of God. We believe Christ gives us and demands of us personal lives that are centered in God and open to God s reality and rule. Christ teaches us to put obedience to God above the interests of self, family, race or nation; to offer God joyously our money, ability, and time. It is part of our discipline to observe a day of worship and rest, setting aside our own working to enjoy God s work, celebrating with sisters and brothers the Lord s goodness. We are charged to pray for ourselves and others with gratitude, boldness, and persistence, confident that God hears and answers our prayers in ways best for us all. Life in God s presence connects us to the lives of others, for if we do not love sisters and brothers whom we see, we cannot love God whom we do not see. Prayers of the People The Reverend Katelyn Gordon Cooke Stewardship of Life Presentation of Tithes and Offerings Offertory Anthem O Christ, Surround Me arr. David Sims God be the love to search and keep me; God be the prayer to move my voice; God be the strength to now uphold me. O Christ, surround me. Bind to myself the name of holy, great cloud of witnesses enfold; prophets, apostles, angels witness. O Christ, surround me. Brightness of sun and glow of moonlight, flashing of lightning, strength of wind, depth of the sea to soil of planet, O Christ surround me. Walking behind to hem my journey, going ahead to light my way, from beneath, above, and all ways, O Christ, surround me. Christ in the eyes of all who see me, Christ in the ears to hear my voice, Christ in the hearts of all who know me, O Christ surround me. *Doxology (Hymn No. 606) old hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. *Prayer of Dedication and The Lord s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. God demonstrates this preference throughout Scripture, and the Bible is filled with stories of women and men who were changed by God s care for them. This summer, we re learning about some of the lesser-known people in Scripture and the ways that God was active in and through their lives. Along the way, FPC people share their own faith stories, and together we grow in faith. Whether you ve been to Faces of our Faith every Sunday this summer or haven t been yet, you are welcome to join us! August 12 Eutychus Mindful Motion Sunday, August 12 11 a.m., P206 Next Sunday during worship, K-2nd graders are invited to join a brief mindful motion session to nurture their physical, emotional and social needs through games, body postures, and breath awareness activities. *Hymn No. 610 1 O for a thousand tongues to sing My great Redeemer s praise, The glories of my God and King, The triumphs of His grace. 2 My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad, The honors of Thy name. 3 Jesus! the name that charms our fears, That bids our sorrows cease; Tis music in the sinner s ears, Tis life, and health, and peace. O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing 4 His love my heart has captive made, His captive would I be, For He was bound, and scourged and died, My captive soul to free. 5 He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean; His blood availed for me. 6 So now Thy blessed Name I love, Thy will would e er be mine. Had I a thousand hearts to give, My Lord, they all were Thine! *Hymn No. 783 When We Are Tested 1 When we are tested and wrestle alone, famished for bread when the world offers stone, nourish us, God, by your word and your way, food that sustains us by night and by day. 2 When in the desert we cry for relief, pleading for paths marked by certain belief, lift us to love you beyond sign and test, trusting your presence, our only true rest. 3 When we are tempted to barter our souls, trading the truth for the power to control, teach us to worship and praise only you, seeking your will in the work that we do. 4 When we have struggled and searched through the night, sorting and sifting the wrong from the right, Savior, surround us with circles of care, angels of healing, of hope, and of prayer. *Hymn No. 547 1 Go, my children, with my blessing, never alone. Waking, sleeping, I am with you, you are my own. In my love s baptismal river I have made you mine forever. Go, my children, with my blessing, you are my own. Go, My Children, with My Blessing 2 Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure. Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure. Here you heard my dear Son s story; here you touched him, saw his glory. Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure. 3 Go, my children, fed and nourished, closer to me. Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free. Here my Spirit s power filled you; here my tender comfort stilled you. Go, my children, fed and nourished, joyful and free.
