T h e C o m p a s s Special Ceremony Celebrates the Arrival of Our Charter. On Sunday, March 8, 2009, Council 14654 of the Knights of Columbus celebrated the arrival of it s charter. District Deputy, Gary Reinert, presented the charter to our Grand Knight, John Cocco, on behalf of the Supreme Knight and the Board of Directors. The presentation and blessing of this document is evidence of our right to exist and function as a council. Senator O Pake, who is a Knight, addressed the Council members and their families and spoke about some of the wonderful work accomplished by the Knights of Columbus. (Continued on p. 3) The Message From the Supreme Knight May your council long continue to flourish and set a good example for its members. May you all enjoy every blessing and satisfaction that true exemplification of our principles can bestow, and may the success of our Order be transmitted through your council in this second century of our existence and many years beyond. -From the Speech Delivered by the District Deputy, Gary Reinert Shown at the top, left, Father Phil Rodgers, Chaplain of Council 14654, blesses the charter at the end of the 11:15 mass. THE CHARTER CEREMONY...A DAY OF FRATERNITY... The Charter Ceremony was followed by a pot luck lunch in the meeting hall. The room quickly overflowed with members and guests. After the blessing by Father Phil, all were treated to a smorgasbord of tasty dishes. The room bubbled with laughter and friendly conversation. This was our first opportunity to share a meal and to meet the families of our brother Knights. We thank all the knights and their families, the members of the Prime Timers, and all of the generous members of our parish for providing such a wonderful feast. We pray that our newly formed council will be bound by acts of charity, unfailing unity, a spirit of fraternity and unending patriotism. GRAND KNIGHT S CORNER My Brothers, Welcome to the second edition of our newsletter The Compass. It s hard to believe that it is just six months since we have formed the Council and all we have accomplished. I want to congratulate all of you on our first successful membership blitz. At the conclusion we were able to welcome 10 new First Degree Knights, and welcome back to our order one 3 rd Degree Knight. Please promote our council to others in our wonderful parish. We have many men in our Parish interested in becoming a Knight but have yet to take the next step. Reach out to these men if you know them and encourage them to join our ranks. Also, if you know of an existing Knight who would like to transfer into our Council please have him contact Kevin Kozlowski. Our first significant fundraiser is scheduled for June 27 th. We will be hosting a Pig Roast and Block Party. The theme is to promote Public Safety and Community Awareness. Gentlemen, we need your help. This fundraiser requires people to chair committees as well as staff the event. This fundraiser will provide the necessary cash to implement more of the charitable work we plan to take on. Along with my request for help, I would like to encourage more involvement in your council. We all have busy lives and responsibilities. I would like to see greater attendance at our meetings. Even if it is just one hour per month, we need your input and talents to continue the significant progress we have made. We welcome your contributions. Please visit our Council website www.knightsofsaintbenedict.org for upcoming events and news. In an effort to promote brotherhood and simply get to know each other and our families better, I will be working on an event that will bring us all together. I will be keeping you abreast of the plans in the near future. The upcoming 4 th Degree Exemplification is a patriotic Degree held in May for those of us who are eligible. I was very proud to relay to our District Deputy, and State Officers that we had over 30 members who could take this final step into Knighthood. If you are eligible to take this final step into Knighthood, I encourage you to complete the journey. Vivat Jesus John Cocco VISIT OUR WEBSITE Check out our new website. THE CHAPLAIN S CORNER: FATHER PHIL RODGERS Marian devotion is to the month of May, like Christmas is to the month of December. Marian devotion is part of our Catholic Faith tradition that we have come to honor and hold in esteem. A good reminder that May is Mary's month is Mothers Day! Just as we honor the women in our parish who have acted in a Motherly-way toward children, so to Mother Mary brings comfort and blessing to her spiritual children, and that calls us to honor her. While there are many wonderful May traditions like: May processions, May crownings, singing Marian hymns etc., there is one prayer that beautifully links Mary's month of May to our Easter season of Jesus Resurrectuion. And that special prayer is the REGINA CAELI or Queeen of Heaven. Consider praying this prayer with your family at your Sunday meals, especially on Mother's Day. Queen of Heaven, rejoice, alleluia: For He Whom you merited to bear, alleluia, Has risen, as He said, alleluia. Pray for us to God, alleluia. Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia. Because the Lord is truly risen, alleluia. Let us pray. O God, Who by the Resurrection of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, granted joy to the whole world: grant we beg You, that through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, His Mother, we may lay hold of the joys of eternal life. Through the same Christ our Lord. AMEN FROM OUR FINANCIAL SECRETARY, LEN KARVER Brothers All, We are doing very well logging our Service Hours on our Survey of Fraternal Activity Form.
