June 4, 2017 Basic Truth: God made me. Key Question: Who can do what God wants you to do? Bottom Line: I can do what God wants me to do. Memory Verse: God made us to do good works. Ephesians 2:10, NCV Bible Story Focus: I can tell others about God. Jesus teaches at the Temple Luke 2:41-50 Make It Fun 1. I Can Do It! I Can Do It! is an activity that uses gross motor movements and listening skills to introduce this month s Bottom Line and today s Bible story. What You Need: No supplies needed During the Activity: Gather the children in an open area of the room. Call out different movements for the children to follow. If you need to, be prepared to demonstrate the movements. Movements can include: Hop on both feet March in place Pat your shoulders Jump up high Stand on one leg Give a friend a high-five Perform three jumping jacks Bend down and touch the floor Clap your hands During the Activity: Today I want to see what you can do! I ll call out a movement that I want you to do. Are you ready? (Pause.) Here we go! After the Activity: Wow! You did such a great job doing all of those different movements. Look at all the things you can do. You re just a kid, but you can do so many cool things. Great job, friends! In Large Group today, we ll hear about something else I KNOW you can do. 2. Outlines Outlines is an activity that teaches critical thinking, matching, and teamwork while introducing today s Bible story. What You Need: Buildings Activity Page, white cardstock, scissors, butcher paper, marker, and wall tape Before the Activity: Copy Buildings on cardstock and cut along the dotted lines. Place each building on top of the butcher paper and trace each one with the marker. Tape the butcher paper onto a wall in the activity area at preschool eye level. During the Activity: Place the building cutouts on the floor below the butcher paper. Encourage the children to work together and match the cutouts to the outlines on the butcher paper. After the Activity: When the children have made a correct match, tape the cutout to the correct outline. Before the Activity: Look! (Point.) I see outlines of different buildings on the wall. Can you help me figure out what each of the buildings are and find their match? During the Activity: There are buildings here on the floor too. (Point.) Let s work together and see if we can match the buildings to the outlines on the wall. (Do activity.) Great job! There are many different buildings on the wall. (Point to each building as you identify it.) I see a grocery store, a library, a school, a house, a post office, and a Temple. The Temple was kind of like a church where people could go to learn more about God! After the Activity: It is very important to tell people all about God and His Son Jesus. We are going to hear about Jesus teaching people at the Temple in our Bible story today. Are you ready to hear a true story from the Bible? (Pause.) Me too! Make It Real Small Group Time What You Need: Paperclip Memory Verse Card (from the Week One Activity Pages on the Website) in your Bible at Ephesians 2:10. Provide a journal and a fun-shaped pen for each small group. You will also need the Young Jesus Activity Page, white paper, scissors, and a glue stick. Make enough copies of Young Jesus on white paper so when cut apart each small group journal has one picture. (Option: Pre-cut and glue the pictures in each journal on the page where you will be writing the children s prayer requests.) SMALL GROUP LEADER (SGL): I need my small group to come sit with me. Where s my awesome small group? (Pause.) There you are! I m so happy to see all of your fabulous faces! Today we started learning about kids in the Bible who ROCK! Who remembers which kid we talked about today? (Hold up journal with Jesus picture or hold up the picture of Jesus.) Yes! We talked about Jesus! Jesus rocked, because He did what God wanted Him to do. And you know what? You can do what God wants you to do too! Who can do what God wants you to do? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! SGL: Again! Who can do what God wants you to do? CHILDREN and SGL: [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! SGL: You sure can! Because God made you to do good things! It says so in our new Bible verse. Listen to this. (Open Bible to memory verse card.) God made us to do good works, Ephesians 2:10. Did you hear that? God made YOU to do good things! Doing good things rocks! Is sharing a good thing? (Pause.) Yes! Is saying kind words a good thing? (Pause.) Yes! Is being a good friend a good thing? (Pause.) Yes! Learning our Bible verse is a good thing too, so let s stand up and say it together with the motions. Just say what I say and do what I do. (Lay Bible down.) CHILDREN and SGL: God made (point both hands up) us to do (point to others and yourself) good works (thumbs up), Ephesians 2:10. (Open your hands like a book.) (Repeat the verse with the motions several times together.) SGL: And kids who do good things ROCK! Right? (Pause.) Right! Now it s time to write in our prayer journal. One, two, three, come sit with me! (Open the prayer journal to the page with the Young Jesus cutout or prepare to glue it on the page where you will be writing with your fun pen.) (Point to picture of Jesus.) God wanted Jesus to tell people about Him. Jesus was still just a kid, but that didn t stop Him! Jesus did what God wanted Him to do and that rocks! God wants you to tell people about Him too. Let s make a list of people you can tell about God under this picture of Jesus. When we pray we can use our list to ask God to help us tell them. When I say your name, tell me one person to write in our prayer journal. (Write each child s name and what they say beside their name. Remember to print the words they say so the children can recognize their names and the letters.) Thank you! This is a great list. Would anyone like to pray before I pray? (Give each child who wants to pray the opportunity to do so.) Now I will pray. Prayer SGL: Dear God, thank You for all of my friends who came to church today. I think they rock for coming to church so they can learn more about how much You love them. I pray that You will help all of us tell others about how much You love them. Help [child s name] tell [person s name] and (repeat with all children and the people they listed). We want to do what You want us to do. We love You, God. In Jesus name, amen. Make It Stick 1. You Think You Can Dance?(Whole group) You Think You Can Dance? is an activity that uses gross motor movements and dance to review today s Bible story. What You Need: No supplies needed During the Activity: Gather the children in a circle in an open area of the room. Select a child to go to the middle of the circle to teach a dance move. Then have all the children do that move together. Repeat until every child has had a chance to teach a move. During the Activity: I know you kids rock and I would guess that you know some awesome dance moves. I want you to take turns teaching us a dance move. Who wants to go first? (If no child volunteers, be prepared to teach a move yourself to get the Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2017 The rethink Group. All rights reserved. www.thinkorange.com 4

dancing started! Also, some children may not want to teach a dance move, and that is okay too.) After the Activity: You did a GREAT job teaching us some cool dance moves. Seeing you teach a dance move reminded me of our story today when Jesus was teaching in the Temple. He was there because that s what God wanted Him to do. Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! 2. Memory Verse with Motions Memory Verse with Motions is an activity that uses repetition and movement to teach this month s memory verse. What You Need: No supplies needed Before the Activity: Say the memory verse with the class several times. During the Activity: Teach the following motions to the children while saying the verse: God made (point both hands up) us to do (point to others and yourself) good works (thumbs up). Ephesians 2:10. (Open your hands like a book.) After the Activity: After the children have learned the motions, repeat several times. Before the Activity: We have a new memory verse this month. It is: God made us to do good works, Ephesians 2:10. Now let s say it together! (Repeat the verse several times.) Nice job! During the Activity: Now I am going to teach you some motions that we can do while we say our verse. Watch me and do what I do! God made (point both hands up) us to do (point to others and yourself) good works (thumbs up), Ephesians 2:10. (Open your hands like a book.) Awesome! Again! (Repeat as desired.) After the Activity: Our memory verse tells us that God made us to do good works. A great thing we can do is to tell others all about Jesus! God wants us to tell everyone about Jesus! Who can do what God wants you to do? [Bottom Line] I can do what God wants me to do! Curriculum Materials for 3- through 5-year-olds 2017 The rethink Group.
