2 March 2017 Commanders Call Hello everyone we have had some great weather. I am having a new above ground pool put in and it s February. We have started a Utz Camp Facebook page. You can check it out at Major James Morgan Utz Camp 1815. Once we get it figured out you will be able to post on the site. Utz Camp National Flag Day Rally will be March 4 th at the Spencer Rd. overpass over Hwy. 70 in St. Peters, MO. from 11:00 am till 3:00 pm on March 4th. We will begin gathering at the closed up Macaroni restaurant, address 121 Costco way St. Peters, MO. 10:30 am behind Costco Gas Filling Station. The address for the Costco Gas Station is 200 Costco Way St. Peters, MO. We will use pickup trucks and SUVs to take you and your flags to the over pass. The Camp has extra flags, and if you have one bring yours. And see you there. The Missouri Division is also holding a flag rally March 4th at 9am - 4pm on the other side of the State. At 21216 Jesse James Farm, Kearney, MO. The next Camp Meeting is March 11 th. We will have a very special speaker, Dianne Moran who has been sharing Mary Boykin Chestnut (for 17 years) one of finest chronicle of the War Between the States Diary from Dixie. So please bring you friends and family members especially your mother, wife, girlfriends and daughters. Men will like this too. So invite everyone you know let s fill up the room. All Camp Meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month at 1:00 p.m. in room 240 or 243. The address is 427 Spencer Road, St, Peters, Missouri (63376). It is just off Mexico Road and south of the new Menards Home Improvement Center. You can access Mexico Road from Interstate 70 by exiting at Mid-Rivers Mall Drive and then go left (which is south to Mexico Road) and then go right (which is east to Spencer Road), or exit at Cave Springs and go south to Mexico Road and then west to Spencer Road. When you get to Spencer go south a few blocks to Boone Hills Drive. The Community Commons Building (427 Spencer Road) is located at the southeast corner of that intersection. Looking forward to seeing everyone there. My Confederate Ancestor By Kevin Carroll Hullum Hodge Carroll was born December 28, 1820 in Pike County, Georgia. He was the Son of Jesse Carroll and Ann Hodge. He married Emmeline D. Harper on January 6, 1842 in Pike County, Georgia. They had eight children born before Hullum joined the Confederate Army as a Private in Company C it was called the Walker Independents Whitfield County. They were in the 60th Georgia Infantry he enlisted at Dalton, Whitfield, Georgia by Major J. L. Calhoun on September 19 1861. He was sent to Chimborazo Hospital No. 5 in Richmond Virginia on September 17, 1862 for rheumatism and released September 27, 1862. On November 18, 1862 Hullum was once again sent to the Hospital in Stanton, Virginia. He was captured on May 12, 1864 the last day of the
3 three days of battle at Spotsylvania Court House, Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Union force had 100,000 to 110,000 soldiers to the Confederate Soldiers of 50,000 to 63,000. The north reported 18,339 casualties, 2,725 killed, 13,416 wounded and 2,258 capture are missing. The south reported 12,687 casualties with 1,515 killed, 5,414 wounded and 5,758 captured are missing. He was sent to Fort Delaware on May 21, 1864 from Plains, Fauquier, Virginia. He was released May 10, 1865 his description was complexion: fair, hair: brown, eyes: blue and height: 5ft. 9in. The couple had one more child after he returned. He passed away November 11, 1878 in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia. Hullum is buried in Bethany Cemetery in Fayetteville, Fayette, Georgia. Commander s Report on Pot Luck 1) $184.25 spent on chicken, plates, and picture frames 2) A bigger place may be needed for our Pot Luck as our camp grows 3) New Officers were sworn in at the Pot luck meeting in January 4) Money raised from MOSB auction-$265.00 and the MOSB Bingo game raised $57.50 5) 51 people attended 6) Compatriot Paul Grigsby to check with VFW in St. Charles for a bigger place. Heritage Defense-Bob Arnold Compatriot Bob Arnold reported on the e-mail by Commander Strain on events in Charlottesville, VG. (On removing Confederate monument of Robert E. Lee and to change the name of Lee Park). Litigation will soon follow. He also discussed the possibility of boycotts of Grant s Farm if any monuments in and around St. Louis are disturbed or moved. Lee Jackson Dinner-Jeff Futhey Dinner went well and the cost of each person was $30.00 Old Business: 1) Division shirts were available at camp meeting for $30.00 and up. 2) Missouri Battle Flag pins were still available for $5.00 3) Compatriot Jeff Futhey was presented a plaque of appreciation for his efforts with the newsletter. 4) Our camp received the receipt of the $1000.00 donation for the Confederate Museum. It was listed as the Stonewall Jackson Council. 5) Compatriot Bob Fallert reported on the new nametags that were implemented at the meeting and to be used at every meeting thereafter. 6) Commander Roper presented a couple of bills to the camp for picture frames of $4.48 ea. (2) and name badge holder with lanyard for $40.00. The motion to approve bills was raised by Compatriot Fallert and 2 nd by Compatriot Morton 7) Compatriot Mike Bevill passed around the camp a Confederate Veterans original hat. 8) The army of Trans-Mississippi is putting on a workshop down in Texas on February 10 th. Idea was brought up for discussion to Darrell Maples to see if a workshop could be done here in the St. Louis area. New Business
5 1) March 4 th, 2017 is National Flag day. Event was originally scheduled for camp members to participate at the site of Jesse James cemetery in Clay County, Missouri. Discussion then followed to instead have the Flag rally at Spencer Road overpass in St. Peters. Event will be on Saturday, March 4 th, 2017 from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Morton Confederate Flag Day On March 4 th, 2017 come join The Sons of Confederate Veterans Missouri Division for Confederate Flag Day at a Northwest Missouri Historical Location of a very well known Southron Hero and Partisan Ranger. On site tours will be given of the home of this Southron Hero and Partisan Ranger. You can visit the gift shop and museum as you wait for each and every tour to be given or wait in the parking lot with others. Each individual should plan to spend 90 minutes or more on each tour. Each tour can accommodate 15 to 20 people. Each individual has to pay separately for the tours of the Historical Museum and Home. Adult Group Rate $7.50 Senior Group Rate (62+) $6.50 Children Group Rate $4.00 Do not forget to bring your Historically Correct Confederate Flags that this known Southern Hero and Partisan Ranger rode under and would have supported. 6 Cockrell s Corner By, Billy Bowden Gaylord Patrick O Conner That same year was born on November 20 th, 1916 and served as a camp commander in 1987. That same year he was elected Missouri Division commander at Jefferson City. For the first time since 1940 the state of Missouri had regained division status when five camps were chartered that year. This accomplishment was due mainly to the efforts of Robert L. Hawkins III. Pat O Conner and John Karel of St. Louis Army of the Trans-Mississippi Commander Ed Cailleteau of Baton rough LA. Presided at the re-activation ceremonies at Jefferson City, Missouri on June 27 th, 1987. Commander O Conner s Patriotic leadership was forged as a combat Infantry officer during the Second World War. He participated in many of the engagements in the European theater, including the battle of the bulge. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre (Cross of War) by both France and Belgium. After the war he served as city attorney for Louisiana, Missouri. His many years of public service included terms as prosecuting attorney Pike County, administrative law judge, and general counsel and chairman of the Missouri industrial commission. Through his long association with the Missouri division he won many enduring friendships among his compatriots, and at the Oklahoma City National Reunion of the Sons of Confederate Veterans he was elected Honorary Commander-in-chief of the Military Order of Stars and Bars. Pat O Connor passed away on December 26, 1994 and monument to the Missourian s in Cockrell s Brigade was placed on the Franklins, Tennessee Battlefield in his honor. 12 As we prepare for Easter this year, have you ever wondered what Easter was like during the War for Southern Independence? Easter fell on these dates during the war: March 31,1861; April 20, 1862; April 5, 1863; March 27, 1864, and April 10, 1865. There were no big feasts as we now today with hams, turkeys and salads galore. Eggs were scarce and even if one could find a local source, a soldier probably couldn't afford them. Southern soldiers would be happy if they were issued standard rations of bacon and cornmeal or rice. For the North, jellybeans were introduced and became a favorite of Yankee soldiers. There were however Easter church services with communion, preaching and many hymns. There were usually many services throughout the day to accommodate the many different Christian sects. Easter of 1865 was April 10th, just the day after General Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox. Services that Sunday must have been filled with mixed emotions.
