That same year he was elected Missouri Division commander at Jefferson City. For the first time since 1940 the state of Missouri had regained division status when five camps were chartered that year. After the war he served as city attorney for Louisiana, Missouri. His many years of public service included terms as prosecuting attorney Pike County, administrative law judge, and general counsel and chairman of the Missouri industrial commission. Through his long association with the Missouri division he won many enduring friendships among his compatriots, and at the Oklahoma City National Reunion of the Sons of Confederate Veterans he was elected Honorary Commander-in-chief of the Military Order of Stars and Bars. Pat O Connor passed away on December 26, 1994 and monument to the Missourian s in Cockrell s Brigade was placed on the Franklins, Tennessee Battlefield in his honor. 12 As we prepare for Easter this year, have you ever wondered what Easter was like during the War for Southern Independence? Easter fell on these dates during the war: March 31,1861; April 20, 1862; April 5, 1863; March 27, 1864, and April 10, 1865. There were no big feasts as we now today with hams, turkeys and salads galore. Eggs were scarce and even if one could find a local source, a soldier probably couldn't afford them. Southern soldiers would be happy if they were issued standard rations of bacon and cornmeal or rice. For the North, jellybeans were introduced and became a favorite of Yankee soldiers. There were however Easter church services with communion, preaching and many hymns. There were usually many services throughout the day to accommodate the many different Christian sects. Easter of 1865 was April 10th, just the day after General Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox. Services that Sunday must have been filled with mixed emotions. Some Quotes from our Southern Generals General, if you put every Union soldier now on the other side of the Potomac on that field to approach me over the same line, I will kill them all before they reach my line. -James Longstreet This is a hard fight and we had better all die than lose it. -James Longstreet I would fight them if they were a million! -Albert Sidney Johnston I have broken all ties that bind me to the (U.S.) Army, not suddenly, impulsively, but conscientiously and after due deliberation. I sacrifice more to my principles than any other officer in the Army can do. I would rather carry a musket in the cause of the South than be commander-in-chief under Mr. Lincoln. -Edmund Kirby Smith Major, send a shell first over their heads and let them get in their holes before you open with all your guns. -John Bell Hood The Back Page by Jeff Futhey Just thought this might be helpful to some of our camp members also the picture of Kirby Smith was great. Mr. Shaffer always has very helpful advice. I talked with the Editor of the Civil War

News and received his permission to print this and other articles. I find The Civil War News is one more helpful addition for my thirst of the War of Southern Independence. 13
