FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JANUARY 28, 2018 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK The distinguished historian of religion and culture Christopher Dawson (1889-1970) was born in a castle on the border of Wales and England. After being educated at Oxford, he became a convert to the Catholic Church and eventually the first to occupy the Stillman Chair of Roman Catholic Studies at Harvard. He once wrote that Every form of education that mankind has known has always involved two elements of tradition; and it has always been the second that has been the more important. In the first place education teaches children how to do things how to read and write, and even at a much more primitive level how to hunt and cook, and plant and build. But besides all these things, education has always meant the initiation of the young into the social and spiritual inheritance of the community: in other words education has meant the transmission of culture. As we begin Catholic Schools Week, it is good to remember that we are supposed to be those who have the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2, 16). Our Catholic schools, which have this as their central purpose, are fully dedicated to this goal. St. Joseph School is one of the key missions of our parish and is crucial to our Catholic future. Please continue to keep our principal, Dr. Paula Valenti, and her staff in your prayers, as well as the students of our school and their families. Msgr. There are lots of good things that help to warm us up and one of them is the kindness and generosity of good people like the parishioners, staff and volunteers of our brother Saint Joseph Parish. Over the years so many children have experiencd the blessings of the Christmas event because of the great generosity and donations of Saint Joseph Oradell. So many families have had a true reason to give thanks on Thanksgiving Day because they had food on their table from the same wonderful people. So many children have and continue to receive an education in a faith based Catholic school because of the same special Stewards of the Catholic Church. There are no big words to express my gratitude for what was shared again this year. I was present when the parents received the gift bags and all were overwhelmed some to tears. I am sure the children jumped for joy when they received their presents. Thank you, Monsignor David, for continuing the traditions started with our beloved late Sister Barbara and continued with servant Sister Mary Ann. Thank you, parishioners and Kristin Racine, for your very warm hearts and souls! Sincerely, Rev. James V. Pagnotta Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Jersey City Just a note to say thank you to you, Msgr. Hubba, and to your parishioners for the ongoing support towards our work at Saint Joseph Schoo, Jersey City. Your parish has been faithful in a multitude of ways: monthly stipend, fundraisers, Thanksgiving food, Christmas toys. We count on this support but we want you to know at the same time how deeply we appreciate all who are involved in this mission. Be assured of our ongoing prayers for you and your flock. Peace, Sister Mary Ann Rattigan Peace Director, Saint Joseph School, Jersey City 6
