How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the Military Vicariate. In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the Archdiocese for Military Services, USA. Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half million Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forces, on ships at sea, and on the battlefield. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a schoolmaster, but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Americans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church protested this rule, and many priests volunteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the Nuns of the Battlefield (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Catholics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 PASTOR S CORNER: The festival is only a month away now and the plans are starting to fall into place. What is still needed is a big push to sell the raffle tickets. The grand prize is $15,000. We also need volunteers to help with the various events and we need everyone to talk up the festival to friends and families. Easter may have been a few months back but our Easter faith is lived each day. Here is a poem that reminds us that the light of Easter illuminates every corner and space of our lives all year round. Blessed Are You Who Believed by Carlo Carretto When you forgive your enemy When you feed the hungry When you defend the weak You believe in the resurrection. When you have the courage to marry When you welcome the newly-born child When you build your home You believe in the resurrection. When you wake at peace in the morning When you sing to the rising sun When you go to work with joy You believe in the resurrection. Belief in the resurrection means filling life with faith It means believing in your brother It means fearlessness towards all. Fr. John INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? If you know someone who may be interested in becoming Catholic now would be a good time to give them that nudge that they may need. It is a good time during these next few months to help them to come in touch with the call of God in their lives and to direct them to myself, Grace Ogonek, Sally Logar, Chuck Rink, or Kathy Keyse. We would be more than happy to sit down with them to answer questions and ease anxieties. The RCIA process for those seeking to become Catholic will begin in September. Also if you are interested in being on the team that journeys with the candidates to the Easter sacraments please let us know. It is so rewarding sharing ones faith and being nurtured by those seeking a deeper relationship with God through participation in the Catholic Church. PETER S PENCE: Today is the Peter s Pence Collection, a worldwide collection that supports the charitable works of Pope Francis. Funds from this collection help victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Take this opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters. Please be generous today. For more information, visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence. FIRST STEP PROGRAM: Attempting to pick up the pieces of one s life after the tragedy of divorce is an area that can impact a person s relationship with God and the Church. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do? The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland offers its First Step Program to help individuals deal with these questions in order to renew and/or strengthen their relationship with God and the Church. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching regarding marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain the resources they offer to the divorced. Everyone is welcome to: Deepen knowledge of the Church s teaching on marriage Learn about the Church s ministry to the divorced/separated in the Diocese Hear about the annulment process and how to submit a case Discover a path to healing after divorce in order to strengthen and/or renew a relationship with God and the Church In any endeavor, taking the first step is always the most difficult. The First Step Program helps individuals to navigate the path of healing and closure. Please refer to the Tribunal website (www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal) for testimonials about the program from past participants. The First Step Program will be held on: Tuesday, 18 September 2018, at St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, at 7:00 p.m. Note that the Diocese of Cleveland no longer requires any fees for this process. For more information check our website: www.dioceseofcleveland.org/tribunal Or call the Tribunal: 216-696-6525/800-869-6525, ext. 4000 STEWARDSHIP CORNER: Catholic stewards take care of the world around us, including embracing the social teaching of the Church. We respect human life and dignity. We protect the natural environment. We share our gifts (time, talents, and treasures) with others. As we work towards one of our parish goals to "increase the level of stewardship in the parish - contributions of time, talent and treasure," we are ready to form a Stewardship Committee. All are encouraged to prayerfully discern to join! This group will generate ideas and implement steps needed to help parishioners better understand stewardship as a way of life in our parish. We will all grow spiritually as we go through this process. We will meet once a month beginning in August. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Ogonek at gogonek@olqpgrafton.org or leave a message at the parish office. FAMILY MASS: Our next Family Mass will be on July 15 th at 8:30. Currently, we need one lector, two Eucharistic Minsters, two greeters, and a family for the presentation of the gifts. All parish families are invited to participate. The "Family Mass Sign-Up" link is accessible on the parish website at olqpgrafton.org or call the parish office to sign up. Embrace this opportunity to share your gifts as a family with the parish! High School / Young Adult Retreat Opportunity: Teens Encounter Christ (TEC) is a weekend retreat with the primary goal of facilitating an encounter with Christ for those who are searching for deeper meaning, purpose, and hope in life, and who desire an authentic relationship with God within a community of believers. TEC is specifically designed for teens who are at least 17 years old or in their junior year of high school, although young adults and adults are also welcome to participate. The next TEC retreat is July 13 th -15 th at St. Leonard's Youth Retreat Center in Avon. Find more information and an application at http://northcoasttec.com. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Our next meeting will be Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 10:30 in the Parish Hall. Anyone is welcomed whether you can knit, crochet, or sew. Join us for fellowship and sharing. Any questions, call Kathy Smeltz at 419-544-2491, Sue Schneigenberg at 440-926-1610 or Kathy Behlke at 440-935-3344. See everyone Saturday.
