The Parish Council is consultative to the Pastor and works to aid the Pastor by setting objectives and general policies which govern the day-to-day life of the parish. Each member serves a three (3) year term. To be eligible to serve on the Council a parishioner must: be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church (see the Catechism of the Catholic Church # 2041-2043); be a registered parishioner of the parish; have attained at least their 18th birthday; possess a willingness to grow in an understanding of Church by taking advantage of opportunities for continuing education in Church doctrine and documents; be able to work with others in a spirit of openness and trust; understand that membership on Council is one of service to the People of God; uphold the teachings of the Church and norms established by the Diocese for Parish Pastoral Councils. Seventh Sunday of Easter - May 13, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 5 Sunday, May 13, 2018 Seventh Sunday of Easter Acts 1:15-17, 20A, 20C-26; 1 Jn4:11-16; John 17:11B- 19 Do you remember the first time you received the keys to the car? That might have been as a teenager. Or do you recall giving a set of car keys to your teenage child for the first time? What trepidation! But what pride and joy as well. Receiving the keys to the car marks a milestone. One is no longer a child but not quite an adult. The awesome responsibility of driving a car might be missed by some and embraced by others. As parents we want to ensure that our children know the obligations that accompany driving. We hope beyond hope that nothing bad happens, that there is no accident. Each of us probably gave a stern yet encouraging talk to these budding adolescents who were yearning only to get behind the wheel and go! And ultimately, we hand over the keys to the car while hoping and praying that all are safe from harm. In today s gospel Jesus is praying a final prayer to the Father prior to his own arrest and ultimate crucifixion. What must have been going through his mind at that time? He was definitely concerned for his friends, those whom the Father had given and entrusted to Jesus. He prays for them, not that they be taken out of the world, but that they are kept from evil, safe from harm, while living in it. Jesus protected his friends while he was with them, but he will be with them no longer. He will not be able to keep them from evil, or even keep them safe. They are being sent into the world as Jesus was sent. Almost as a concerned parent, Jesus makes his prayer to the Father. Jesus desire for his friends is that they may share his joy completely. We too are those who are the objects of this prayer. We are Jesus friends and he wants our joy to be complete. He knows that the world is a tough, sometimes violent place. He will lose his life in a contest with violence. And yet, he does not take us out of the world. He gives us the ability to live in it, while asking the Father to keep us from the evil one. Moreover, He consecrates himself to us. As we are his followers, indeed his very friends, we are consecrated in truth. This final prayer and petition tells us a great deal about Jesus, his relationship with the Father, and his relationship with us. How fortunate we are to have him as our advocate. It is imperative that we continue to have a vibrant Youth Group here in our Parish to empower young people to live as disciples of Jesus Christ in our world today; to draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the Catholic faith community; and to foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person. Monday, May 14, 2018 Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle Acts of the Apostles 1:15-17, 20-26; John 15:9-17 Jesus Last Supper discourses are surely some of the most poignant passages in John s gospel. You can almost hear the urgency in Jesus voice as he exhorts his disciples to carry on and always love one another. Just love one another. Three simple words, yet how difficult they are to live at times! Or at least we make them that way. We prefer to hold on to our anger, resentment, or that small slight from this morning. We are entitled to feel the way we do right? Yet, how much easier it is to simply let the negative feeling go. It s as easy as opening your hand. Today, when you find yourself holding on to anger, visualize opening your hand. Let it go. Love one another. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 Memorial of Saint Isidore Acts 20:17-27; John 17:1-11a Seventy-five percent of the world s poor 900 million people live in rural areas in conditions of extreme poverty, according to a March 9, 2006 Vatican statement on agrarian reform. In the absence of internationally guaranteed protections, the Vatican says, deprivation, exploitation, lack of access to the market, and social exclusion become more acute among people who work the land. The Vatican urged rich countries to correct policies, such as farm subsidies and trade barriers, that adversely affect the economies of developing countries, and it condemned the concentration of productive farmland in the hands of a few. Seventh Sunday of Easter - May 13, 2018 Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish Page 6 Wednesday, May 16, 2018 Acts 20:28-38; John 17:11b-19 The proverb This too shall pass may come to mind while struggling through a tough period in life, such as a time of transition or a personal financial crisis. We hope and trust that the pain of these situations is temporary and will eventually pass. Though not often invoked in good times, this proverb can also refer to the passing of good things in our life. It might be, for example, the death of a loved one or the departure of a close friend or mentor, as the early church experienced when Jesus and then Paul prepared to leave behind their earthly lives. It reminds us to be open to what life brings and draw comfort from the fact that God s love remains constant. Thursday, May 17, 2018 Acts 22:30; 23:6-11; John 17:20-26 The Catholic Church s approach to ecumenism has come a long way since the Second Vatican Council. The previous Code of Canon Law (from 1917) decreed: It is illicit for the faithful to assist at or participate in any way in non-catholic religious functions (no. 1258). That changed with Vatican II and the new Code of Canon Law in 1983, and in 1993 the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity stated that Christians may be encouraged to share in spiritual activities and resources, i.e., to share that spiritual heritage they have in common in a manner and to a degree appropriate to their present divided state (no. 102). We still have a long road ahead, but the road map is clearer. Friday, May 18, 2018 Memorial of John I, Pope & Martyr Acts 25:13b-21; John 21:15-19 Many hopeful moments occurred during the impressive funeral and memorial rites for Pope John Paul II in 2005. Perhaps one of the most remarkable was the gathering of so many leaders of different religious traditions and denominations from around the world. This was a sign of hope that all believers, of whatever corner of the world, could recognize that God is more important than our differences and that, in fact, God longs to gather us all into one. There is one God, the God of all. Let us pray that we will have the faith and humility to let God be God. Saturday, May 19, 2018 Acts 28:16-20, 30-31; John 21:20-25 Celebrity gossip is so pervasive that it s hard to avoid. How much do you know about the personal lives of the glitterati? Sure, these people invite the public into their lives for profit, but scrutinizing even relishing the foibles of strangers is a slippery slope. Jesus frequently reminded his followers to focus on themselves their own failings and how they could improve instead of worrying about those around them. Are you too quick to judge the actions of others? Beginning with the month of June, Wednesday evening confessions will be held ONLY on the first Wednesday of the month from 7:00pm 8:00pm. Thank you! New Marian Feast Starts This Year Obligatory Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church Monday, May 21 Mary as Mother of the Church has a long history and deep biblical roots, and in February 2018 it was announced by the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments that a feast day to recognize Mary with that title is henceforth to be celebrated on the Monday after Pentecost on the Church calendar. Cardinal Robert Sarah, in the decree announcing the feast day, pointed to Blessed Paul VI s address at the conclusion of the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council (November 1964) as the clear foundation for the memorial of Mary, Mother of the Church. Pope Paul declared the Blessed Virgin Mary to be Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother. He also established that the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this most tender of titles. Therefore, Pope Francis has decreed that the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, should be inscribed in the Roman calendar on the Monday after Pentecost and be celebrated every year. Hence, in the Latin-rite Church, this obligatory memorial will have precedence over any other memorial of a blessed or a saint on the Monday following Pentecost.
