PASTOR S COLUMN WHAT S HAPPENING Last summer we did a tremendous amount of work in our two school buildings in order to ready them for a new school year. Classrooms and hallways were repainted, blackboards became white boards, computers were updated, smart boards/short throw projectors were installed in many classrooms, the gym was refurbished and made to look like new, a section of the lower school was made ready for the greenhouse (our pre-school program), and the list could go on. This summer we are once again doing work in the schools, but we also turning our attention to the rectory/parish office and to certain areas in the church. RENEWAL AT THE RECTORY/OFFICES At the rectory we are redoing the entrance area to make it more inviting. We are removing the old and very soiled carpets on the first floor and replacing them with a tile floor which will be easier to maintain. In addition, we are repositioning the offices to increase efficiency and to provide our employees with better work areas. We are also readying office space for a new support person who will be working with the church, the school, and the religious education program. You will be learning more about her in a future bulletin. During the summer, we will also be installing new wiring in the rectory that will allow us to upgrade our outdated phone system and move to VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). We are also decreasing the number of copy machines throughout parish including the school buildings and consolidating all copying to only two areas. One copy area/copier for the school and the other for church use. These changes should result in lower copy costs and in better quality and efficiency. Another section of the rectory being worked on is the meeting room in the lower level of the building. If you have ever been in that room, you know it is not the most welcoming environment. The condition and décor of the room just seems to draw the life out of people. We plan to make the room more pleasant and inviting. PLEASE NOTE: The parish office/rectory will be closed as the renovation work continues. Due to possible phone interruptions please contact us at the Religious Education Office (201-261-1144). CHURCH WORK In the church, we will be repainting the entrance area on the Elm Street side of the church, and also on the Harrison Street side. We will also be making some improvements that will allow us to display material and post important information that will easily be visible to those entering and leaving the church building. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 8, 2012 3 PROGRESSING AT THE PARISH LIFE CENTER While all this is going on, work continues in the Parish Life Center on Grove Street. This project is taking longer than anticipated, but I can report that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We hope that by the end of August the entire first floor of the building will have been renovated. In the course of the work we discovered that under the old soiled carpets and tiles there is a wood floor. The floor is in relatively good condition and should be able to be refinished. I think you will be very pleased when we hold an open house and you can come and see what has been done. We hope to use the Parish Life Center for various parish meetings and programs. PASTORAL STAFF AT WORK The parish pastoral staff is also working. We are not painting walls or refinishing floors, but looking at where we are as a parish and where God may be calling us to grow and improve. On Monday and Tuesday, June 25 and 26, the pastoral staff and the support staff had two full days of meetings facilitated by Sister Donna Ciangio, who works with our staff and the Pastoral Council. There was a wonderful team spirit among the 13 of us taking part in these two days of meeting. We are truly excited and enthusiastic about the future. Those two staff days also gave Father Andrew, our new parochial vicar, an opportunity to see the staff in action. He certainly came away knowing that we are a staff that plans for the future and a staff where people enjoy working with one another. Love, Father Tom Iwanowski Father Andrew Park, the newest addition to our pastoral staff, poses with joyful parishioners following Sunday Mass. As Father Andrew was quick to discover, being part of Saint Joseph Parish brings joy to life!

Parish Registration All families enrolled in the Religious Education Program must be registered parishioners of St. Joseph Parish. If you are not registered with the parish, please call the Rectory (201-261-0148) to speak with one of the priests and register. Volunteers Needed to Staff the Religion Classes Volunteers are the heart of the Religious Education Program. Volunteers staff our classrooms and aid in overseeing the school buildings when class is in session. With close to 900 students in our program, you can only imagine the number of volunteers it takes to help make this program work. Without our volunteer staff we would not be able to offer our young people a quality program guiding them in the formation of our Catholic Faith. Whether you are the parent of a student or a caring parishioner who enjoys working with children, please take a few moments to prayerfully consider giving of your time and talents as a catechist. Remember, as you undertake this task, you are helping to give the Gift of Faith to the young people of our parish. If you would like further detailed information about volunteering, please contact the Religious Education Office at (201-261-1144). We invite you visit the new Religious Education Website for news, schedules, download forms and updates. (sjcreligioused.blogspot.com) ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ EUCHARISTIC ADORATION JULY 11 Our monthly day of prayer before the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament will take place this Wednesday, July 11, immediately following the Mass until closing prayer at 5:30 pm, in Mary's Chapel (Lower Church). Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 8, 2012 WHY I USE PARISH PAY by Edward Winkler I think that Parish Pay is the easiest and the most convenient way to support Saint Joseph Parish. Through Parish Pay you make your usual Sunday donation, plus the Archdiocesan assessments and all the special collections throughout the year, You have your choice of paying from a bank account or using a credit card. I like it for several reasons. First, I am not writing checks (usually at the last minute) and making sure I have the envelope and then leaving it on the kitchen counter when I leave for Mass. Second, it makes it easy to budget. When the donation amounts are entered for the year, I have my budget for Saint Joseph donations. Third, I have a record for tax purposes. It is quick, convenient and I never need to worry about my regular support of Saint Joseph. (I cannot guarantee that using a credit card for contributing to our parish will get you to heaven, but it might give you enough points for a trip to Hawaii.) To find out more about PARISH PAY go to our parish website (sjcnj.org) and click on NEWEST NEWS. MOMS IN PRAYER Moms in Prayer is a weekly rosary prayed by various mothers of our parish for your children, our children, their schools, teachers and staff. Being a parent is a stressful and demanding job. It isn t always easy to trust in the Lord. However, in order to successfully parent our children, we NEED to bring our concerns to the Lord and trust that everything we do is of Christ. As the anniversary of our fourth school year comes to an end, we are currently accepting new members for the 2012/2013 school year. This past year, we usually met during the morning in Mary s Chapel in the Lower Church or at the Grotto, weather permitting. Members are asked to make a weekly commitment. We are understanding if you are unable to make it on a particular week. Please do not be intimidated if you have never said the rosary. Everyone has had a first day of joining the group and we have pamphlets that can help you follow along. If you are interested in joining our weekly rosary group, please contact me with your interest and/or questions. When you call, please let me know when you are available so that a convenient schedule can be planned for our members. To be added to our list and receive email, contact Melanie Keenan by August 15, 2012 (melk927@gmail.com) or (201-483-6829). ST. JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Mark Chapter 6:1-6 Have you ever felt pushed away? Made to feel that you were not smart enough or skilled enough or good enough by your friends? Have you ever felt rejected and ignored by others? In today s Gospel, Jesus is rejected People in the town where he grew up did not believe that Jesus could be smart enough to teach them about God. The people put no faith in him, they would not believe Jesus was special, that he was God s Son. Even though the people rejected him, Jesus knew that he was not rejected by God His Father and this gave him strength and courage. When people reject you or make you feel bad, remember Jesus. Remember that he knows what you are going through Even though the kids we know from school and the neighborhood may leave us out, Jesus never leaves us out. We always have a place in his heart. He is our faithful friend. MISSION OF THE WEEK When you play with your friends this summer, remember to include everyone. Try not to leave anyone out. When you include everyone and care about the feelings of others then you live as a true follower of Jesus. 6
