June 25, 2017 Page 5 EXTREME HUNGER APPEAL All eligible donations made by June 30 will be matched by the government. Extreme hunger and starvation in Kenya, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen have reached grave levels. More than 20 million people are at risk for starvation, while millions more suffer from drought and food shortages. The UN is calling this the largest humanitarian crisis since 1945. United Church partners the World Council of Churches (WCC) and All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) have this message for people of faith around the world: More people face famine today than any time in modern history. We are not only called to respond to the needs of our sisters and brothers in dire situations in a compassionate, timely, and sufficient manner. We are also commanded to see the divine in those who are suffering and to appreciate their resilience, opinions, and solutions and to respect their dignity as we respond. May our prayers invoke the grace of God, and mobilize people to bring about peace and an end to hunger and violence! General Secretaries Olav Tveit (WCC) and Andre Karamaga (AACC) For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Matthew 25:35 What You Can Do Act to address the climate change that affects farming in these regions. Support political leaders seeking peace, the resolution of conflict, and just food systems. Donate Now Online via our secure donation page., Phone 1-800-268-3781 ext. 2738, and use Visa or MasterCard or Send a cheque, money order, or Visa or MasterCard information with donation amount to: The United Church of Canada, Philanthropy Unit - Emergency Response, 3250 Bloor Street West, Suite 300B Toronto, ON M8X 2Y4 Please be sure to note "Emergency Response Extreme Hunger Appeal" on the face of your cheque. Pray for an end to global hunger. Prayer for Extreme Hunger Creator, We pray, with others around the world, for those facing extreme hunger and starvation in South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Kenya, and Yemen. Redeemer, Let us be part of a world response that cares for all people in need with love. Sustainer, Help us, with others, answer the call to end famine and eradicate poverty. Amen. Alydia Smith

June 25, 2017 Page 6 MINUTE FOR MISSIONS JUNE 25, 2017 HELP FOR CHILDREN IN CONGO Our gifts for Mission & Service support children harmed by civil war. Let us hear a story from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Marie was 11 years old when she was raped and became pregnant. Her story is that of many girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The country s citizens have been traumatized by a long-standing and brutal conflict. During the civil war that ended in 2003, 5.4 million people died. Localized conflicts continue. Millions of people have been uprooted and displaced. Many social services are not provided by the state, so hospitals and schools are run by churches, like Mission & Service partner Église du Christ au Congo, Department of Women, Children, and Family. This partner has long supported unaccompanied children, many of whom are survivors of sexual violence. Some 150 of these children are gathered at PRENAO Light School. There they continue their education and get help dealing with the traumas they have experienced. Students and teachers receive a meal each day. PRENAO also supports young girls who are mothers, like Marie. They learn a trade or skill that gives them an opportunity to earn a living and make a life for themselves and their children. They also receive psychological support. Marie is one of the girls PRENAO has helped. She now has eight-year-old twin boys. Through PRENAO she received an education, support, and trauma counselling. Her sons now attend PRENAO while Marie continues her studies at university. We sing thanksgiving for our global partners, who are transforming lives. If Mission & Service is already a regular part of your giving, thank you so much! If you have not given for Mission & Service, please join me in making Mission & Service a regular part of your life of faith. In all our Mission & Service giving, with a willing heart, we sing thanksgiving to God!
