From Father Simon: I am back in time to be part of a special day in the lives of 94 teenagers of our parish. The Most Reverend Bishop Joseph Perry, an auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago, administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to these young people on Friday. With the reception of this sacrament, along with the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist that they received earlier, these young people complete all the Sacraments of Initiation. In preparation to receive this Sacrament, the students put in service hours, were instructed in the faith by our dedicated teachers and catechists, attended a retreat and wrote letters to the Pastor (in this case the administrator) indicating their desire and reasons to be confirmed. Allow me to share with you their own words about their preparation, their role models and their responsibility to witness to their faith Volunteering: Michelle looks forward to being involved in campus ministry in high school where she can deepen her faith with God Christopher volunteered at a retirement home, folded laundry and assisted in a New Year s Eve Party. Mary experiences God in the children she assists a Sunday school. Janie loves volunteering at Misericordia because it makes her appreciate all of the gifts God has bestowed upon her. Deepening their faith: Francesca looks forward to publicly proclaiming that she wants to continue practicing her faith. Liam enjoys learning about God and how much He loves us, cares for us and guides us all through life. Justin wants to continue his growth in the Holy Spirit along with his Catholic virtues such as respect, responsibility, safety and honesty. Role Models: Fallon says the QAS family makes him feel safe and the Church provides a place for him to reflect on school life and friends. Ben sees how the people of the parish come together to serve and build a community of faith. Francesca s parents are a big role model in her path into the Catholic faith her parents are constantly volunteering and she thanks them Aerin s mother and father inspire her to be a better Catholic Genesis s grandmother taught her prayers and her grandfather s work as a deacon helped her faith grow Lastly, Erika says being confirmed is a big step into being an adult and it is like taking your training wheels off! As their role models, let us help these newly confirmed keep their bicycles steady as they pedal their way to growing their faith. Fr. Simon Braganza 2 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL

WHY GO TO MASS EVERY SUNDAY? REASON 65 It seems lots of people don t really appreciate the religious dimension of religious holidays, like Easter, for example. They like the day off from work and the chance to gather with family and friends, but the reason for the holiday in the first place doesn t get much attention. Except it s the reason for the holiday that gives its celebration some extra significance. It s not just a day off work, but the recognition of something much deeper. And we human beings were not created to live only on the surface of life, but to experience its richness, its depth, its meaning. Those are only accessible if we are able to attach some spiritual importance to the experience. Easter isn t just about eggs, bunnies, bonnets and candy; it reveals our deepest hope for our own personal future that we will live in Christ for all eternity. We have the opportunity to remind ourselves of this crucial truth every Sunday when we go to Mass. Every Sunday is a little Easter. 4 Queen of All Saints Basilica Chicago, IL WWW.QASPARISH.ORG Queen of All Saints Basilica, Rev. Msgr. John Pollard

f tewardship 3rd Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017 Queen of All Saints Basilica Committed to Christ, sharing God's gifts, building the Church together Stewardship What comes after Easter? For those immersed in the secular world, Easter is long over. The pastel bunnies, the chocolate eggs, the color-splashed jelly beans which appeared in the marketplace so temptingly just as Christians were beginning the fasting of Lent, have long been swept from the store shelves to be replaced in anticipation of the next marketable holiday. For the Christian steward, how backward this all seems. Yes, we believe that the Paschal mystery and the life-changing events of Easter are not over. They are not an end but a triumphal beginning, and they have altered us in a quite radical way. We have lived through Lent and the Paschal mysteries, all the while trying to deepen a relationship with the person of Christ. It s as simple, yet as amazing and complex as that. The deeper the relationship grows, the more we become rooted in it, the more this relationship with Christ comes to dominate our lives. We no longer compartmentalize Jesus, we hold him at our center. And the mysteries lead us to the fundamental question at the heart of all Christian stewardship, the question that Easter compels us to ask: How do I steward my resources my time, my money, my abilities and gifts, my very life so that they are in service to the Kingdom of God? It s not a part-time question. It s not a seasonal question that s swept off the shelf periodically. It s the basic question which the Easter season demands of us: Jesus, how do you want me to serve you? Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the scriptures? - LUKE 24:32 How often do we take the time to discern what Jesus wants from us? Are our prayers always petitions, asking Jesus to do things for us? If so, that s a one-sided relationship. Living our faith means developing a personal relationship with Jesus. Just like any friendship, there is give and take, each side listening to each other and helping each other out. Take time in silence to listen to what Jesus is asking of you. Please consider what we can give back to our parish, in our time, our talent, and our treasure, in response to the great gifts God has given us. Our parish needs our help especially now. We realize that our parish s calls for our help seem never to take a break. Right now we are asking for participation in our United Parish Program (UPP) as we prepare for our May 19 gala, Field of Dreams. This is our single parish-wide fundraiser and we depend on the proceeds of this event to meet out budgeted operating costs for the year. This year s event promises to be yet another fine social and financial success! At the same time we are beginning to ask our parishioners to consider an increase in their Sunday offering to pay for the cost of our very recently announced Basilica ceiling project, which is an unexpected and very significant need, and is on top of our already successful capital campaign To Teach Who Christ Is. Throughout the wonderful history of our parish there has been an uninterrupted series of very positive responses to calls for support. We know that the challenges we face today will be met with the same success that our predecessors in this parish achieved! Thank you for all you do for our parish! Our Capital Campaign: how to fulfill your pledge The best way to fulfill your pledge is to use the self addressed envelope included with your periodic pledge reminders: Archdiocese of Chicago Gift Processing PO Box 7256 Kensington CT 06037-7256 A favor - if instead you decide to drop your payment into the collection basket, please use a plain envelope clearly marked CAPITAL CAMPAIGN and use your capital campaign account number (not your envelope number) on your check. If you are a registered parishioner, please come into the rectory during business hours to schedule your child's baptism. If it is not possible for you to come into the rectory, please call the rectory to make arrangements. The Sacrament of Baptism for infants is celebrated two or three Sundays of the month, depending on the time of year, at 1:30 PM - call the rectory for the exact schedule. A Baptismal Preparation class for the parents is required. They are held once a month and must also be scheduled in advance. If an adult or a school age child seeks baptism, special arrangements should be made with one of the priests. The Sacrament of Matrimony Queen of All Saints helps couples prepare not only for their wedding day, but the lifelong commitment of living a Christian marriage. Parishioners of Queen of All Saints Basilica who are baptized and free to marry in the Catholic Church may celebrate their marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica. Couples from Queen of All Saints seeking marriage in Queen of All Saints Basilica should contact one of the parish priests at least six months prior to their intended date of marriage. The couple must meet with one of the priests before the date for the marriage can be confirmed. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is not a sacrament for those who are at the point of death. As soon as one of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him/her to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. Therefore, any member of the faithful who is seriously ill because of sickness or advanced age, may properly receive this sacrament. Third Sunday of Easter April 30, 2017 11
