14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 9, 2017 Throughout Matthew s Gospel, the evangelist sets up a dichotomy between the so-called religious professionals and the little ones (Jesus disciples and/or Matthew s community). In today s reading, Jesus praises God for having revealed mysteries to the little ones that are hidden from the wise. Earlier in Matthew s Gospel, chapter 5, Jesus had directed his disciples not to pray like the hypocrites do (Matthew 5:5). Later on in Chapter 23, Jesus will denounce the scribes and the Pharisees as hypocrites. These two and other passages throughout Matthew s Gospel suggest that the wise from which the Father has hidden understanding are those who fancy themselves experts. The burden that Jesus lifts likely refers to the overly scrupulous interpretation of the Law by the scribes and Pharisees. In contrast, the yoke of obedience to Jesus word brings rest from one s labors. #KeepRKidsDry is still moving ahead. We have completed two-thirds of the School Building and the remaining section (Gym) and finish work will HOPEFULLY be scheduled in the next couple of weeks. Our initial surge in revenue for the project has slowed down considerably and we CANNOT sign the contract without the funds at ready. SO, if you have slowed down or forgotten or not responded to this capital venture, PLEASE consider making your investment in our future THIS WEEK! Thanks and I hope this invitation is read as a gentle reminder! #KeepRKidsDry! Parish Music Director Angela Kovacs will be away this week enjoying the company of music directors, musicians, cantors and choirs, instrumentalists, and church worship representatives at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) Convention in Cincinnati, OH. The Association gathers like-minded priests, pastors, musicians, choirs, directors, liturgists, and ALL for this annual convention to inspire, dream, educate, form and develop men and women into wise and worthy liturgical minsters in song and word and music FOR their assemblies and communities. Angela has brought a fresh spirit to St. Mary and we pray for her continued energy and enthusiasm in Music and Worship. THANK YOU to all for your faithful generosity to the Sunday Collection. Thanks as always and BE BLESSED! Fr. John

A pure heart can see God Mother Teresa But to be able to see the face of God you need a clean heart, a heart full of love, and you can only have a heart full of love if it is completely pure, clean and free; and as long as we in our own hearts are not able to hear that voice, the voice of God when He speaks in the silence of our hearts, we will not be able to pray, we will not be able to express our love in action... Jesus tells us today: Learn from me...my burden is light. It is time to lighten our burden.

It s too early for that just yet. After church this Sunday I will be headed down to Cincinnati for the 40 th annual National Association for Pastoral Musicians convention! This is a weeklong sacred music convention that focuses on how we can do MORE than just playing the organ and picking out hymns. Of course, I consider my job to enhance and constantly encourage people to participate within the Mass and other types of worship through the music that I provide. I am here to build a comfortable, inviting, invigorating environment that inspires people to feel faith to their core! Going to these kinds of continued education programs gives me new ideas and spiritual nourishment for the next year to come! Look forward to next week s article; I ll be talking what I learned while in Cincinnati! Traditional Choir, Contemporary Choir, and Youth Choir are off for the summer. All choir members are welcome to sing up in the loft during weekend masses. Summer is a perfect time to audition for involvement in one of our ensembles, especially for prelude solos! If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see me after mass up in the loft.
