May 31, 2015 St. Kevin R.C. Church Page 2 FROM THE PARISH ADMINISTRATOR Dear Friends, The First Letter of John teaches us the most basic truth: God is love (1 John 4:8). Today we celebrate the Holy Trinity, our Loving God Who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The first prayer many of us learn is to make the Sign of the Cross. When we enter a church, we dip our finger in the holy water font and bless ourselves with the Sign of the Cross. This basic truth is also most profound, for we believe in One God who manifests Himself as three Divine Persons. Today the Church has us celebrate this fundamental mystery of our faith. My advice is to keep it simple and celebrate God s great love for you as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our diocese received wonderful news last week with the appointment of two new auxiliary bishops: Bishop-Elect James Massa and Bishop-Elect Witold Mroziewicz. Let us keep them in prayer as they prepare for their ordination as bishops on July 20 th. We also pray for Deacon Chris Bethge and his classmates as they prepare for ordination to the priesthood on June 27 th. This is ordination season, and many priests celebrate anniversaries during this time of year. Bishop Chappetto celebrated his 44 th anniversary on May 29 th (and will celebrate his 3 rd anniversary as a bishop on July 11 th ); Msgr. Finnerty celebrates his 52 nd anniversary on June 1 st ; Fr. Kim celebrates his 2 nd anniversary on June 29 th ; and I will celebrate my 26 th anniversary on June 24 th. Please pray for priests daily, that we may always remain faithful to our call to serve the Lord and His Church. This week on Wednesday, June 3 rd at 7:30 PM we will have our annual celebration of St. Kevin, our parish patron. The homilist for the Mass will be Fr. Kevin McBrien, the Dean of our Deanery and the pastor of Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Floral Park. To celebrate the Year of Consecrated Life, we have invited women and men in religious and consecrated life who grew up in the parish or who served here to join us on our patronal feast day. Anyone with the name of Kevin will receive a special blessing as well. Please join us for the Mass and the ice cream social that will follow. The celebration has grown each year, and it should be a wonderful occasion to see old friends who are such an important part of our parish s history. St Kevin, pray for us! Finally, to celebrate Corpus Christi, we will have an outdoor procession around the block after the 5:00 PM Mass next Saturday, June 6 th. All the children who made their First Communion or Confirmation are invited to participate in the procession with their dresses and suits or Confirmation gowns. An outdoor procession allows us to celebrate our faith beyond the doors of the church please pray for good weather! (If it rains, we will have a simple procession inside the church after the Mass.) Page 3 www.stkevinflushing.org May 31, 2015 Congratulations to St. Kevin Boy Scouts! The boys marched in the Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade, the largest in America. St. Kevin s Scouting led the Scouts from the area with two floats: 1) two Scouts praying at the gravesite of an honored solider; and 2) a battleship named USS Eagle Scout. The boys marched tall and proud leading the way and waving at the crowd that lined Northern Boulevard. At the end, we received the Best in Show trophy for our floats and our presentation to the judges. The trophy was accepted by Assistant Cubmaster Tom Clune. Great job by our boys!
