Francis In the aftermath of Harvey, we have experienced tremendous losses as well as overwhelming display of solidarity and generosity. My prayers continue to be with those who continue to be displaced at this time. I would like to thank many of our parishioners who have stepped up to coordinate our parish efforts to help our fellow parishioners in need. They are truly the incarnation of God s providential care in these times of distress. Thank you for all your hard work in meeting the needs of others. I also want to thank those who have donated to our Relief Fund. We continue to accept donations that will be directly provided to parishioners affected by the flooding. Checks can be written out specifically to St. Cecilia Catholic Church Relief Fund. I am sure that many of your friends have asked you how they can help. Please refer them to our Relief Fund this fund will provide financial help to all our fellow parishioners who have to rebuild their homes and lives. Next weekend, we will have a second collection. This collection is to assist all those who have been affected by Harvey. May God give us all the strength and guidance as we reach out to so many of our affected parishioners in the days and weeks ahead! Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Page 8 www.saintcecilia.org Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Flood Victim Q & A Follow Up Our community has experienced a great deal of loss, as well as an abundance of grace, in the ten days since Hurricane Harvey made landfall. The enormous task of helping provide our fellow parishioners, school families, and staff with the support they need is especially challenging because of constantly changing conditions. The purpose of this communication is to provide updated information, help, and resources to our St. Cecilia community regarding: Floodwater related health and safety considerations Health and safety precautions Home repair considerations Professional remediation and disaster recovery action plan Referrals to remediation and disaster recovery services/companies Harvey Crisis Response Guide, published by Baker Botts Future focus Status of Floodwaters and Related Health & Safety Considerations Every flooding situation is unique, however, certain concerns related to health and safety in the aftermath of a flood are likely to impact many St. Cecilia families: Reliable sources have advised that storm water and wastewater have commingled in some areas-resulting in con taminated water. Flooding in areas where flood water rose above the level of tubs and toilets may have also commingled 'sewer-type' water and storm water. According to a source at MD Anderson, mold spores have increased significantly post-hurricane Harvey (3000% according to some sources), and staph infection is on the rise due to bacteria in standing water. Water standing for 24 hours or more is considered hazardous to your health. Power/electricity in proximity to standing water presents a dangerous environment. Health & Safety Precautions Families are understandably eager to return to their homes too quickly begin the remediation process or to retrieve belongings. Friends and fellow parishioners desire to help in this difficult process. Should you choose to enter a flooded home, safety should be the primary consideration. Understanding that a home exposed to standing water is likely to present hazardous conditions, at a minimum, the following safety wear, equipment, and procedures are recommended: High-grade mask covering nose and mouth Goggles that create a perimeter seal against the face (not just protective glasses) Latex gloves underneath "cut-proof" (cut-resistant) work gloves Waders with waterproof boots, higher than the water line DO NOT ENTER a flooded home or flood waters with open cuts/wounds or sores. If you have a cut/wound or sore that is exposed to floodwater, seek immediate medical attention. Home Repair Considerations Each home's circumstances are unique, however, the following general information and considerations for home repair offered by parishioners Erin and Alec Stetzer, owner of Stetzer Builders, may be helpful: After water subsides, it may be prudent to engage a structural engineer to check the integrity of your slab and the possibility of subsidence under the slab. Water restoration companies are quoting 5 to 10 per square foot of affected area (which should include demolition of the affected areas, antimicrobial spray, dry-out, and moisture testing). It is appropriate for sheetrock to be cut 24 inches above the highest level reached by the water in the home. Since sheetrock is sold in 48-inch sheets, if the highest water level reached in the home is 24 inches or less from the floor, the wall should be cut at 48 inches high from the floor and a full sheet of sheetrock used. If mold is present, it may be prudent to engage a licensed hygienist to assess the property and write the protocol for correction/removal. Mold remediation must be performed by a licensed mold remediation company. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time www.saintcecilia.org Page 9 Flood Victim Q & A Follow Up (Part 2) Professional Remediation & Disaster Recovery Action Plan A three-step process is involved in restoring a flood-damaged home. The following are names of companies providing remediation and disaster recovery services: Step 1: Demo, dry-out, antimicrobial spray, moisture testing. (Pinnacle Disaster and Recovery Services: www.pinnaclerestorationsvc.com) Step 2: Forensic/mold analysis and process management, create/navigate recovery plan, for example: to help locate a hygienist or contractor, and obtaining a building permit. (Snyder Energy Services: www.snyderenergyservices.com) Step 3: Contractor to do the construction work. Other companies in the Houston area that perform some of these services:blackmon Mooring: www.blackmonmooring. com; BMS Cat: www.bmscat.com; Servpro: www.servpro.com Harvey Crisis Response Guide Baker Botts has published an excellent guide containing a list of Frequently Asked Questions for persons affected by Hurricane Harvey (http://files.constantcontact.com/df436d5f001/fb59a24e-7f82-4704-a6b9-7fa7a45f682f.pdf). All the information contained in the Guide, as supplemented from time to time, should also be available at http://www.bakerbotts.com/ aboutus/harvey-crisis-response-group. Future Focus The greatest number of our St. Cecilia families most seriously impacted by flooding reside in areas where remaining flood waters present the potential health and safety hazards described above. For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to suspend the effort to organize volunteer parishioner demo crews to work in those homes at this time. Instead, while we continue to receive more information and reassess conditions, we will focus all our efforts to help with other needs. We are already working to identify specific, immediate needs such as furniture, meals, and housing, and to meet those needs through the generosity of the St. Cecilia community. We pray that the Holy Spirit continue to fill us with faith, hope, and fortitude. St. Cecilia... Pray for Us! Join the Choir! Join the choir to serve the Lord and the community, make wonderful new friends, and come with us to Europe in 2018! The Saint Cecilia Choir will soon be back for another season to minister at the 11:00 am Mass. So far, we have 40 choir members, but our goal this year is to be 50 singers strong! This is a great time for new members to join because we are just about to start a new year. Additionally, our exciting season will also include a trip to Germany, Austria and Czech Republic in July of 2018! Who can join? Previous music experience is helpful, but certainly not required. Participants must simply possess a reasonably good singing voice (the ability to match and maintain pitch) and be willing to commit to the rehearsals and services. This choir is for adults and young adults from high school to the "young at heart". When do we serve? Weekly at the 11:00 am Sunday liturgy (September May), as well as at the major liturgical celebrations of the year. When Are The Rehearsals? Wednesday evenings beginning August 30 from 7 to 9 pm in the Church. Who Do I Contact? Andrew Meinen, Director of Liturgy and Music. ameinen@saintcecilia. org, 713-465-3414
