Volume 7 Edition 6 June 2018 Page 3 W hy does God need us? For that matter, DOES God need us? Here s the simple answer in case you don t want to read the entire article: Yes, God needs us. He needs to be His effect, but He does not need us to be a cause. By being His effect, we are His hands and feet, we show the world God through our actions. We are the window through which the world comes to see God, so we are His effect on the world. But God is the only Creator and only Cause. Psalm 33:9 reminds us when He spoke, the world began! It appeared at His command. God encourages people to seek Him; it is not us or our words. He has chosen to use us to reveal His love to the world. It s how He has chosen to be at work in the world. For His triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Jesus chose a donkey to serve as His royal transport. He had need of the donkey and, if asked, His disciples were instructed to say, The Lord has Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Colossians 3:23 (NLT) J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) need of it (Mark 11:3). Isn t it astounding that the Son of God should use such lowly means to accomplish His purposes? In the late 1800 s, Scottish preacher Alexander MacLaren commented on this: Christ comes to us in like fashion, and brushes aside all our convenient excuses. He says, I want you, and that is enough. Think of it! The Creator of the universe needs us and desires to fit us into His eternal design! Though all-powerful and not dependent on any creature, He has chosen to carry out His plans through lowly human instruments. If He didn t need us to carry His word around the world or across the street, He would have taken us to heaven as soon as He saved us by His grace. But He does need us, and when we answer His call to work with Him, we open ourselves up to be used in ways we could never imagine. Someone once asked Francis of Assisi how he was able to accomplish so much. He replied, This may be why: The Lord looked down from heaven and said, Where can I find the weakest, littlest man on earth? Then He saw me and said, I ve found him. I will work through him, and he won t be proud of it. He ll see that I am only using him because of his insignificance. You may be like St. Francis: small in your own eyes, but God has need of you! He has given each of us calling, a job to do to in His name to bring His purpose to completion. The Father s plan needed the faithful Son who would go to the cross. The ongoing plan requires a people who are worthy enough disciples that they take up their crosses and follow. God is looking for ordinary people for extraordinary work. Some of you have told me that you feel like God is moving you to be in choir. Stop pushing back and be used the way He wants to use you. He needs you. Bro. Mike Z.
