The Path to Star Council Brother Knights, Now is the time when most GK's and DD's start paying particular attention to monthly reports on membership and insurance. The goal...star Council. I thought it might be appropriate at this time to reflect on what a Star Council award really means to our councils and our order. In 1882, when Fr. McGivney organized the first council in the basement of St. Mary's church, many things were different but many things were also the same. His parishioners were some of the poorest citizens in New Haven, Ct. Until just a few years prior, Catholics were unable to even own property and Catholics were considered second class citizens at best. There was a real lack of understanding of our church and that resulted in verbal attacks and worse. Today, we may not be the lowest rung on the economic ladder (with the exception of our Latino brothers) but we still suffer from a lack of understanding from the non- Catholic population and the last time I looked, we are still a favorite target of the press. If Fr. McGivney's fragile new organization was to succeed and address the conditions that his parishioner s faced, one thing had to happen. The order had to grow. Why, because without a growing and committed group of Knights who proclaimed their faith and publicly supported their church, nothing would happen. From the first meeting in St. Mary's Church to today, membership growth has been the key to our success. The main topics of discussion at State Deputy training sessions are membership, membership, membership, insurance and membership. The other reason for launching the Knights of Columbus was to protect the families of his parishioners from the destitution that followed the loss of a breadwinner. In Fr. McGivney's day, Catholics couldn't even purchase insurance. As a "Fraternal Benefits Organization", the Knights could issue insurance policies to members and families. His dream became reality and the rapid growth of the order was matched by a rapid growth in insurance issued by the Knights. This accomplished several things. First, Fr. McGivney's goal of providing for the families of Catholic men was achieved. Second, the success of the Agency Department provided a source of funds for the ever growing charitable needs of the K of C And last but not least, the Knights of Columbus "Agency became a leader in the insurance industry which brought distinction to our order and public acceptance of our organization. Back to today. When our councils achieve Star Council, we are continuing to support the dream of our founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney. We make it possible for the Knights of Columbus to donate $139 million dollars to charity. We make it possible for the Knights to continue expanding into other parts of the world where our principals of charity, unity and fraternity are desperately needed. And finally, we continue to provide the finest insurance coverage available to our members and their families. Whether we continue to achieve our lofty goals always boils down to what each of us does. Now is the time to sign up that guy you have been talking to for the last six months. Now is also the time to talk to a field agent. I know, you have a lot on your plate and there's always next week but please remember what's at stake and give your field agent a call. Whether our councils make Star Council and make it possible for the dream to continue will be determined in the next two months. Success will bring the highest honor achievable for our councils. Success will keep the dream alive Steve Kramp Email: stephen.kramp@kofc.org Field Agent 875-1067
