Formation For All Formation for All is an online program designed to help Catholics of all ages to learn and pray about Respect Life and Social Justice issues. The next session will address the topics of Adult and Embryonic Stem Cells. In addition to discussing the difference between embryonic and adult stem cells, it will also address the need to approach science and medicine with a moral understanding of the intrinsic dignity of the Human Person. This session coincides with the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes and World Day of the Sick, February 11 th. Sessions are designed for all ages and various settings. To access these sessions go to: dbqarch.org/risj/formation. YOUTH MINISTRY AND FAITH FORMATION Elementary Faith Formation January 31 st is the feast day of St. John Bosco, patron saint of youth. As a priest, John served young people throughout his whole life by teaching them about Jesus and helping them prepare for First Communion. He started a home for orphans where over 150 boys who no longer had families could live. He taught them skills so that they could have jobs once they were old enough to live on their own. John was kind to them and showed them the fatherly love of God. St. John Bosco, pray for us! BECOMING CATHOLIC Would you like to learn more about the Catholic Faith? Are you thinking about possibly becoming Catholic? If so, we would love to talk to you about this! The process of becoming Catholic is deeply personal and no two faith journeys are identical. We would really like to meet you and accompany you along your journey if you will allow us. Don t travel alone! This process is open any time during the year for adults (or children older than 7) who are interested in becoming Catholic, or for Baptized Catholics who never received their First Communion or Confirmation. Please contact us at: RCIA@stceciliaparish.org, or 515-233-3092, or stop in the parish office 8:30AM 4PM on Monday-Thursday, 8:30AM 2:30PM on Friday. We look forward to seeing you soon! Our Catholic Schools Week Committee and Jessica Loecke, FSA Chair, have worked hard on a fun new agenda for this year s Catholic Schools Week. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. A special blessing of throats occurs on the feast of St. Blaise, February 3. What is the origin of this? A. St. Blaise, Biagio in Italian, Blasco or Blas in Spanish, was a bishop of Sebaste, Armenia, in modern Turkey, who was martyred for witnessing to the faith. He was tortured and beheaded for his beliefs by the local Roman governor around AD 316. This is all that is known about him, the rest being legend. We know much more about devotion to and the popularity of St. Blaise than historical facts. The special blessing of throats associated with St. Blaise is due to a miracle attributed to him. While in prison, he miraculously saved a boy choking on a fish bone. Early in the sixth century, evidence exists in the Eastern Church that Blaise was prayed to for aliments of the throat. To this day, his feast is a holy day in the Eastern Church. In the ninth century, veneration of St. Blaise came to the Western Church and became very popular. Blessing of the throats with crossed candles began in the 1500s, the height of devotion to St. Blaise, and that blessing is still part of the devotion of the Catholic Church. No matter what the facts are, St. Blaise is a constant reminder to us of God's care and concern for us in our weakness, sickness, and limited human existence. God's healing touch is with us always. St. Blaise's celebration is one of the ways in which we highlight and thank God for that care and concern. January 29, 2017 - Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Ric Nelson, Chair 451-8384 STEPHEN MINISTRY "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." Hebrews 10:24 The words "one another" or "each other" are used more than 50 times in the New Testament. What this tells us is that God did not create us to be independent. He created us to be interdependent. We are made in His own image - to be loving, caring and forgiving, He created us to need one another. "It is not good that man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18h). Do we recognize the need in those one anothers and do we reach out to them? We have received God's grace and light and are called upon to bring His grace into the lives of others. Please pray for this year's class of Stephen Ministers who are nearing completion of their training. They will join 30 current Stephen Ministers who are serving the Ames Area Catholic Stephen Ministry. For information contact Anne Schmitt (515-291-8257) or Deacon Alan (515-231-8099). MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT "Building A Thriving Marriage" - Strong marriages don t happen by chance. Successful marriages require self-awareness, grace, and forgiveness. What obstacles get in the way of a successful marriage, and what are the principles we need to form a marriage that thrives? All adults from the area are invited to join us February 4 in the St.Cecilia - St. Louis Room. Meal and refreshments will be provided. Please gather for the meal at 6:15PM, followed by "Building A Thriving Marriage" at 7PM, concluding by 8:45PM. We will provide a meal for the children. Please RSVP for the meal and/or childcare by contacting Deacon Ron and Mary Smith at DeaconRon.Ames@gmail.com or 515-441-0480 by February 4. Please know you are welcome to join us, if you have not made a reservation. Want to enrich your family? Want to stimulate your marriage? Want to meet new people? Want to join a small Christian Community? Christian Family Movement (CFM) may be just what you are looking for. The CFM is a network of small faith-sharing groups. A typical group consists of 5-7 couples or about a dozen parents meeting once a month for study and conversation. They follow a timely program which focuses on issues that encompass the home, church and community. CFM is for all ages and stages - couples, parents, developing families, blended and one parent families, middle years couples, empty nesters and grandparents. To learn more, please contact Deacon Gary and Kay Aitchison at 296-2966 or gaitchis@iastate.edu.
