Our Torah calls Rosh Hashanah Yom Teruah, or the day of the teruah sound. (from the shofar). Rosh Hashanah also starts the 10 Days of Repentance, which ends after the Yom Kippur fast. The area s Conservative synagogues once again conduct joint Selichot services. Temple Emanuel, located at 424 25 th Street at the Virginia Beach oceanfront, hosts this year s assembly. Programming tentatively starts at 9:00 PM on Saturday, 20 SEP 2014, with the prayer service commencing approximately 11:00 PM and concluding shortly after midnight. Selichot consists of penitential prayers and liturgy that most traditions continue until Kol Nidre. No RSVP required. Kempsville Conservative Synagogue, also known as Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH) will assist at local Jewish cemeteries with families who desire to visit gravesites. We will hand out stones, offer a kippah, and help with the prayers. To assist with this mitzvah, please contact Mr. Ed Landress at (757) 305-0626. Rosh Hashanah services start at Wednesday, 24 SEP 2014 at 6:45 PM in the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue sanctuary and continue the following morning at 9:30 AM. Shabbat Shuvah, from the haftorah reading that contains the phrase shuva Yisrael (or return Israel ) immediately follows Rosh Hashanah on 27 SEP 2014. Yom Kippur services start with Kol Nidre at 6:30 PM on Friday, 03 OCT 2014. The fast ends on 04 OCT 2014 at 7:22 PM on Saturday, 04 OCT 2014. Memorialize someone you love in the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue Book of Life, read during Yom Kippur Yizkor services. We require written inputs to arrive no later than 30 SEP 2014 at the synagogue. We enclosed the form, along with suggested donations and other memorial opportunities, in this mailing. Many community members still require assistance putting food on their tables. Please consider donating non-perishable food items or household goods during our Kol Nidre food drive, which starts before Yom Kippur services. We will bring your donations to Jewish Family Service (JFS) after the holiday ends. Please consider helping us finish refreshing the sanctuary before Rosh Hashanah. A group gathers Sunday mornings to patch holes, prepare the walls, and paint.
