ORDER OF WORSHIP Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost World Communion Sunday: Peace and Global Witness Offering: Domestic Violence Awareness October 7, 2018 Eleven O Clock PRELUDE: I. The Infinite Peace of God - Lani Smith II. At Worship - Franklin Ritter CHIMING THE HOUR Greeters: Elizabeth Price and Lori Gast Liturgist: Bill Gast GREETINGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Psalm 118 says: This is the Day that the Lord hath made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! Good morning and welcome. It is so nice to see all of you here this morning. Please remember to sign the attendance registers located in each pew. It is time for announcements, and I have the first one. As Lori told you last week, we have some Daily Devotionals in the Narthex for you to take home. They are free to anyone who wants one, but it is first come first serve. Does anybody else have an announcement they would like to make? Please stand, in body or spirit, and join me in our Call to Worship and remain standing through the response *CALL TO WORSHIP: (Responsively) Leader: Prove me, O LORD, and try me; test my heart and mind. People: For Your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in faithfulness to You. All: Let us worship God. *PRAISE CHORUS: Hymn # 667 When Morning Gilds the Skies (vs. 1) LAUDES DOMINI When morning gilds the skies, my heart awaking cries: may Jesus Christ be praised! Alike at work and prayer to Jesus I repair: may Jesus Christ be praised! Please bow your heads for our Opening Prayer *OPENING PRAYER Lord, open our eyes that we may see the truth of Your word and the beauty of Your world. Prepare our hearts to wait in this quiet place for Your words to us. In Christ s name. Amen. Our first hymn today is *HYMN No. 369 Blessings and Honor O QUANTA QUALIA *CALL TO CONFESSION If we say we are without sin, we deceive ourselves. Let us confess our sins before Almighty God.

Let us pray *PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful God, hear us as we cry out in our secret anguish and pain for Your mercy. We torment ourselves for sins long past rather than acknowledge them before You and ask for forgiveness. We hide our past sins deep in our minds and hope that no one knows. But You, O God, know the secrets we hold most dear. Forgive us when we hold on to past wrongdoings, allowing it to destroy our happiness and guide our future actions. Forgive us and free us from the guilt so we may serve You with joy in all things. (Please wait about 20 seconds, and then say,) Amen. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON Brothers and sisters in Christ, believe the good news of the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *RESPONSE: Hymn #836 Abide with Me (vs. 3) I need Thy presence every passing hour; what but Thy grace can foil the tempter s power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. EVENTIDE You may be seated and at this time would our youth please come forward. (If there are no youth (besides the regulars,) then just say you may be seated. ) TIME FOR YOUTH Please bow your heads for our Prayer of Illumination PRAYER OF ILLUMINATION God, place Your word before me in clear language that gives understanding. Help me to love Your words and incorporate them into my life. Amen. Our Psalter Lesson comes from Psalm 8 please read it responsively with me. PSALTER LESSON From Psalm 8 Please read responsively Leader: O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens. People: Out of the mouths of babes and infants You have founded a bulwark because of Your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. Leader: When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars that You have established; People: what are human beings that You are mindful of them, mortals that You care for them? Leader: Yet You have made them a little lower than God, and crowned them with glory and honor. People: You have given them dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under their feet, Leader: all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. People: O LORD, our Sovereign, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!. Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God! And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. *RESPONSE: Hymn No. 581 Glory Be to the Father GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen, Amen. You may be seated. It is now time for our Prayer Concerns and Celebrations. Does anybody have anything they would like to share? CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY Prayer concerns and celebrations PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY: Communion - Stephen Heller *RESPONSE: Hymn No. 606 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Let us come to God with our prayer of Thanksgiving *PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING It is with thankful hearts we acknowledge Your many gifts. While people around the world are homeless or lack food, water, and healthcare, we have more than we need. Make us constantly grateful and willing to share Your bounty with others. Amen. Pastor: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord. Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Pastor: To the one true and living God

Therefore we praise You, joining our voices with the choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of Your name: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest. How wonderful are the works of Your hands, Holy God, and how gracious is the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Breathe on us, breath of God, and upon these gifts of bread and cup Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen, Amen, Amen.
