We all know the story it is the night Jesus will be betrayed by his disciple, Judas, with a kiss. He goes with his friends to the Mount of Olives and the Garden of Gethsemane. He goes there to pray, and he asks his disciples to pray with him, but instead they can t stay awake. As the moment of his arrest approaches and he returns and finds his friends asleep and he asks Peter, So, could you not watch with me one hour? [Matt 26:40] One hour -- Jesus asks for one hour of his closest followers time. Now there are many ways of understanding this request to watch and pray with the Lord as he faces his coming passion and death, but now I want to consider two ways in particular because they both relate to the practice of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament which is what this article is about today. The first consideration is Jesus' reference to an hour. In the Scripture when Jesus uses this term it almost always refers to the Devil s time, e.g. Behold, the hour is at hand, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners, [Matt 26: 45] or in St. Luke s gospel when Jesus speaks to the chief priests, elders and temple guards and says, But this is your hour and the power of darkness. [22:53] But here, in Gethsemane, Jesus asks his disciples to pray with him for one hour an hour of reparation, an hour of preparation to combat and gain strength against the hour of evil which was coming for him and which inevitably also comes for us. To spend time with the Lord in Eucharistic Adoration is to be a warrior against the hour of evil. In a Holy Hour one may make reparation to the Lord for personal sins and for the sins of the world. This is, or can be, a sharing in the work of redemption as we pray and offer ourselves to God. A Holy Hour is also time to prepare ourselves for the spiritual warfare in which we live daily to pray for guidance to know what is right, to pray for the grace to overcome temptation, to examine our conscience and attend to our souls. The second reference from this story is a very human one. Jesus, in his humanity, is facing a frightful trial, and he wants his friends around him for companionship and support. He asks the same of us. Jesus no longer faces a cruel death, but he still thirsts for us. His love for us longs for a reply. So He asks us to spend time with him. A lot of us know things about Jesus; we may have studied our faith with diligence, but to know faith in an intellectual way is not the same as to know Jesus intimately, as we know a spouse or a very close friend. Neither theological knowledge nor social action is sufficient to keep us in love with Christ. The only way we learn to love like this, and to persevere in this love, is through time time spent in Christ s presence, gazing on his face as it were. It is like looking at a sunset. As you look, the setting sun shines on your face and gives it a subtle glow. It is the same with Eucharistic Adoration. When you sit before the Blessed Sacrament, the light of God s presence transforms you, illuminates you. You know, it is possible to come to Mass regularly, receive the sacraments often and yet never know Christ with this intimacy, never be changed by him. This intimacy comes only one way through time spent in regular prayer; Eucharistic Adoration is a most powerful prayer. To come to Adoration is to seek a deep personal encounter with Christ. This time of prayer is like the oxygen circulating in our blood it is a source of spiritual life. What is necessary to become a committed perpetual adorer: one hour of your time once a week and a heart that is humble and patient and open to listening to God. At Sacred Heart we have Adoration each Wednesday afternoon from 12:00 6:00 pm. If you are interested in becoming a committed adorer please call Clare at the church office [387-6671] to sign up. Could you not watch with me one hour? Clare Coulon Page 2 June 10, 2018

It takes the physical heart of Jesus as representation of His Divine love for humanity. The Feast of the Sacred Heart has been part of the Church s liturgical calendar since 1856, and is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost Sunday. The devotion especially emphasizes the unmitigated love, compassion, and long-suffering of the heart of Christ towards humanity. Monday, June 11: St. Barnabas, Apostle: Barnabas, a Jew of Cyprus was closely associated with Saint Paul he introduced Paul to Peter and the other apostles and served as a kind of mediator between the former persecutor and the still suspicious Jewish Christians. When a Christian community developed at Antioch, Barnabas was sent as the official representative of the church of Jerusalem to incorporate them into the fold. Later Paul and Barnabas were sent by Antioch officials to preach to the gentiles. Enormous success crowned their efforts. But all was not peaceful. They were expelled from one town; they had to go to Jerusalem to clear up the ever-recurring controversy about circumcision. Disagreement later separated Paul and Barnabas but they were eventually reconciled. He entered the Franciscan Order and longed to preach to the Moors. But an illness prevented him from achieving that goal. He went instead to Italy where he prayed, studied the Scriptures and lived a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. He was a powerful and spirit-filled preacher. St. Anthony died in Padua. He was canonized less than a year later and named a Doctor of the Church in 1946. St Anthony is known as a finder of lost objects.
