WORSHIP SCHEDULE Sundays 8:00 a.m. & 10:45 a.m. Holy Communion: 1st, 3rd, 5th Sundays Becky Lanzito & Karen Leicht - Organists, Ann Souza - Music Director, Mandi Stilson Choir/New Music Accompanist WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS We are pleased you chose to be with us in worship today, and pray the Lord blesses you as he has blessed us with your presence. Our goal is to help people find the right place for them to hear God s word and serve His mission. We d love to support you in that spiritual journey. Please take a moment to complete an attendance card and place it in the Offering plate or give to an usher. This card will help us connect with you. HOLY COMMUNION The Lord s Supper is celebrated according to the Lutheran Confessions based on the teaching Jesus gave his disciples and us that he is truly present in this meal. Confident that our sins are forgiven, we experience our oneness with him and each other as he gathers us at his table. His true body and blood, given and shed for us, we share in this meal as he invites in Matthew 26:26-28, Take and eat; this is My Body This is My Blood Baptized Christians sharing these beliefs are invited to receive Communion. All others are invited to the altar rail for a blessing. Wine can be taken by common chalice, individual cup, or by dipping your wafer into the chalice. Please address questions to the Elders or the Pastor. Non-alcoholic wine is in purple-colored cups. NURSERY We have two rooms available for your use. When the service is in the sanctuary, the nursery is down the hall just past the restrooms. If the service is held in the gym, the nursery is in the youth room at the far end of the gym. SERVING TODAY TODAY S FLOWERS ARE PROVIDED BY: Olson and Redman family in memory of dad and grandpa, Gene Puetz, Cal and Susan Cox in memory of Calvin Jr. born March 19, 1995, and Craig Johnsen in memory of wife, Donna Wheeler Johnsen. 4

LENT LECTIONARY This service carries the themes of the Lent Lectionary the selected readings for this season in the Church Year, as we gather in sorrow over our sin, recognize our need for a Savior, and anticipate His salvation accomplished through the cross and resurrection. Opening Hymn Jesus, Grant That Balm and Healing LSB 421 5 O my God, my rock and tower, Grant that in Your death I trust, Knowing death has lost its power Since You crushed it in the dust. 5 Savior, let Your agony Ever help and comfort me; When I die be my protection, Light and life and resurrection.

Invocation and Call to Worship P: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, Hebrews 12:2 C: the author and perfecter of our faith, P: who for the joy that was set before him C: endured the cross, disregarding the shame, P: and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. C: Now is the time of God s favor; now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2b P: Turn us again, O God of our salvation, Psalm 85:4, 4:6, 37:6, 113:7 C: that the light of Your face may shine on us. P: May Your justice shine like the sun; C: and may the poor be lifted up. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. Confession and Absolution 1 Peter 5:6-11, 1:3-5 P: Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you. Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. C: We humble ourselves before the Lord. We confess that we have sinned against heaven and earth, against the Lord, His Creation, and one another. Please come to us, Lord, and forgive. Amen. P: We have an advocate with the Father: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 1 John 2:1 C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people. Mark 10:33 P: Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Psalm 32:1 C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people. P: We have an advocate with the Father: Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people. Amen. Silence for meditation on our need for Christ s forgiveness.

P: At the command of the Lord, Abraham prepared to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice on the mountain; yet, in mercy God the Father provided a ram as a substitute. We give thanks to the Father that on Calvary He did not spare His only Son but sent Him to offer His life as a ransom for many. The God of all grace has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, and He Himself restores, confirms, strengthens, and establishes you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. According to his great mercy, he has caused you to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Your sins are forgiven in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Song of Thanksgiving Father Welcomes LSB 605 1986 Kevin Mayhew Ltd. Greeting and Collect (Prayer of the Day) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy, be gracious to all who have gone astray from Your ways and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of Your Word; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Anthem Jesus, I Surrender All" Adult Choir All to Jesus I surrender; All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live. Refrain Refrain: I surrender all I surrender all All to Thee my blessed Savior I surrender all All to Jesus I surrender; Humbly at His feet I bow, Worldly pleasures all forsaken; Take me, Jesus, take me now. Refrain All to Jesus I surrender; Make me, Savior, wholly thine; let me feel the Holy Spirit, truly know that thou art mine. Refrain All to Jesus I surrender; Lord, I give myself to thee; Fill me with thy love and power; Let thy blessing fall on me. Refrain All to Jesus I surrender; Now I feel the sacred flame. O the joy of full salvation! Glory, glory to His name. Refrain Old Testament Reading Lamentations 3:17 26 (ESV) 17 My soul is bereft of peace; I have forgotten what happiness is; 18 so I say, My endurance has perished; so has my hope from the Lord. 19 Remember my affliction and my wanderings, the wormwood and the gall! 20 My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. 21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in him. 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. 8

Epistle (New Testament Letter) Romans 5:1 8 (ESV) 1 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. 6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel Luke 21:10 19(ESV) [During the days after Holy Week, while in Jerusalem,]: 10 Then [Jesus] said to [His disciples], Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. 11 There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven. 12 But before all this they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors for my name s sake. 13 This will be your opportunity to bear witness. 14 Settle it therefore in your minds not to meditate beforehand how to answer, 15 for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict. 16 You will be delivered up even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and some of you they will put to death. 17 You will be hated by all for my name s sake. 18 But not a hair of your head will perish. 19 By your endurance you will gain your lives. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Responsory John 4:23a; 3:16 P: The hour is coming, and is now here, C: when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth. P: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, C: that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. P: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. C: He was delivered up to death; He was delivered for the sins of the people. Amen. 9

Sermon Romans 5:1-8 Suffering Produces Endurance, Etc., Etc., Etc. - It's Always Seemed Like Such Noise Offering & Prayer Requests In addition to the prayer requests already received, Pastor will pause here to see if there are additional requests. Prayers can be thanksgivings, joy, requests for yourself, or requests for others. Offertory Create in Me LSB 192 Sung as our Offerings are brought forward to the Altar Prayers The Lord s Supper: What We Believe All Christians who are baptized and have been instructed are invited to receive Communion with us if you believe as we do that the bread is the body of Christ, and the wine is the blood of Christ, truly present for us for the forgiveness of our sins. 11

If this is a new teaching to you, or if this is different than you believe, we ask that you wait to commune until we ve had a further chance to talk. We invite those who are not communing to come to the rail, cross your arms, and receive a blessing from the Lord. Communion Distribution Pastor distributes the bread, and the Elders distribute the wine with individual cups or common cup. The individual trays also contain alcohol-removed wine in the center of each tray in the purple cups. Each side will be ushered from the center aisle to the communion rail, row by row, starting with the front. Go to the rail on your side of the sanctuary, filling in starting with the outside wall towards the center. Once you have received the elements, you may remain at the rail for prayer and leave at your own pace. Return to your seat using the outside aisle. Use the distribution time to prepare yourself for communion, sing the hymns as prayers to God, and maintain this as meditative time. Preparation for the Lord s Supper LSB 629 sts. 1 2 12

The Lord s Prayer P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom, and teach us to pray: All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Words of Institution Pax Domini (The Peace of the Lord) P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. Second Distribution Hymn When Peace, like a River LSB 763 Common Dismissal P: Now may this true body and true blood of our Lord. C: Amen. Prayer of Thanksgiving P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, enable us to remember and confess Your holy cross and passion, Your blessed death, Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension into heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. You overcame the assaults of the devil and gave Your life as a ransom for many so that with cleansed hearts we might be prepared joyfully to celebrate the eternal feast when You come again with Your Kingdom. C: Amen. Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. 14 C: Amen.
