Dear Parishioners, A few terms associated with the Divine Mercy Sunday celebrations brought up more questions about our faith and its traditions. One of them is an indulgence. Some have asked what it is and do we still believe in indulgences. First of all, yes, we, the Roman Catholic Church, do believe in indulgences and continue the practice of receiving them; however, it is often a misunderstood practice. In the Rite of Penance (the Sacrament of Reconciliation), the guilt for our sins is taken away, but the temporal punishment due to our sins still remains. This punishment may be remitted through indulgences. Through special prayer offerings and a sincere act to change our lives, we are purifying ourselves from the sins we have committed. The faithful receive an indulgence through the ministry of the Church, which was given the authority from Christ. Those who receive an indulgence must have an appropriate disposition and fulfill certain requirements. A plenary indulgence remits, whereas a partial indulgence removes only a part of it. Indulgences can be obtained for oneself or for the souls who are in Purgatory. A plenary indulgence can be received only once a day. Three requirements are necessary. They include: receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, receiving the Eucharist, and offering a prayer for the intentions of the Pope. The purpose of indulgences is the actions of the faithful. Indulgences encourage the faithful to incorporate a truly Christian character within actions they perform on a regular basis. The goal is to move away from sin and to seek the grace of God. When we do this, it is always a good thing. In the example given to us by St. Paul, let s turn from our past, receive the call from Christ, and begin anew starting with the gift of the Pauline Year Indulgence offered to us by the Church. Yours in Christ, Fr. Gary E. Kaiser On Sunday, April 3, in this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy, a Divine Mercy Service will be hosted by Father Eugene Schmitt at St. Celestine Church at 3:00pm. All are welcome to attend St. Celestine Church and the Diocesan Office of Catholic Rural Life will offer the annual Rogation Service to pray for favorable weather, protection from natural disasters, safety in the fields and on the roads, and for a fruitful harvest. Participants are encouraged to bring a sample of seed and soil to be blessed at the end of Mass. This service is for all who eat and care for the earth. The Rogation Service will be held on Wednesday, April 13 at 6:30pm at St Celestine Church in Celestine. The Family of Elizabeth Liz Schmitt would like to say Thank You to all who helped us in anyway during our mother s illness and at the time of her death. Thanks for the visits, prayers, food and donations. It will always be remembered and cherished by our family. Thanks to Fr Gary, Fr Jeff and Fr Ackerman for the beautiful Mass. Thank you to Mike Schmitt and Justin Schmitt for serving and thanks to Ann and Tom for the wonderful music. To all who helped with the bereavement meal, whether it was helping that day or bringing food, what a great gathering it was. Fr Jeff and Fr Gary, thank you for giving mother the last rites. Parishioners and St. Mary Parish thank you for everything. The Elizabeth Liz Schmitt Family Happy Birthday to the following parishioners who will be celebrating their 80+ birthdays in the month of April: Eugene Haase, April 3; Shirley Schmitt, April 6; Ruth Goeppner, April 13; James Kapp, April 17; Pat Schmitt, April 20; and Dolores Leinenbach, April 25. May God bless you on your special day. Congratulations!! Thank You to the Notre Dame Club and the Ireland K of C for the donation of the bench and table that is located right outside the preschool door. These were made from the plastic caps we have been collecting. Time to start sending in your Picnic Quilt donations, either to your group leader or to the parish office. Not on a group? Would you consider making a donation of $35 and we will add you to a group? You do not have to quilt or buy materials for a quilt, just make a donation and your name will be added to a group quilt. Can t give $35? Any amount will be appreciated. Call the parish office for details. Thanks to all who made our Easter Egg sale a success. We colored 135 dozen eggs. All proceeds will go to Habitat House for Humanity. A member of our parish would like to donate flag holders for any military person buried in our cemetery. These will be attached to the stone and will not be in the way during mowing season. There are a few stones in our cemetery that already have the holders on them. Call the parish office for more info. Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ A Healing Mass will be celebrated on April 10 at St. Mary Church, Huntingburg. Worship at 3:30pm, Mass at 4:00pm.
