Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018 Dear St. Martin Community, A Reflection This Sunday, Jesus is asking for a definite way of life that as disciples we are called to make a difference. Faith is more than assent of the mind of what we believe in, but it is a way of life of what we are called to be. As faith is a way of life we are not to be stumbling blocks, hindering others to encounter Jesus. Our way of life is a sharing of faith one to another Faith is passed on by contact, from one person to another, just as one candle is lighted from another Pope Francis. Christians who make a difference are building blocks or stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. At first the apostles themselves were like that stumbling blocks, and bit by bit they realized that following Jesus can be seen in many ways: There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me. For whoever is not against us is for us. Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. (Mk 9:38-43) That s the way of Jesus. That s faith as a way of life making a big difference in life is being a true follower of the Lord. Let us meet Jesus in many ways, and help others meet Jesus. Faith Formation Corner We are now celebrating the Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time and for this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to reflect on grief (internal) and mourning (external). This weekend our St. Martin of Tours Community celebrated the life and ministry of Judy Swazey, our Liturgy Director for almost 30 years. When she passed away in August, many in our parish and around the Diocese experienced deep grief at the loss of an important leader in the liturgical life of our Church. During the Vigil and Funeral, we were able to mourn her passing from this life to the next. For many of us, this communal mourning is only the beginning of a longer period of grieving. Healthy grieving is an important part of the human experience and our faith provides many resources to aid us in our grief. A wonderful model of grief and mourning can be found in Luke chapter 24. This chapter begins after Jesus has died and Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women come to Jesus tomb and cannot find his body. They tell the apostles and his other followers this news and then the passage shifts to two of his followers on the road to Emmaus. Jesus joins the travelers on the road and eventually reveals himself in the blessing and breaking of bread. These two followers then return to the rest of the community and share their experience. In the midst of this sharing, Jesus appears to them and says, Peace be with you. What can this chapter teach us about healthy grieving? First, after we experience loss, we can look to our faith tradition for rituals and practices that may aid in the processing of our emotions. Next, when we aren t sure what to do, we can talk with close friends about all that happened. This sharing will hopefully bring us to a place where we can pray together and God s presence can be revealed to us in the midst of our suffering. Then when we experience God in the midst of a few, we can then return to the larger community to share God s presence and activity with others. It is often in this larger communal sharing and praying that we can experience God s gift of peace. Although, peace does not always come quickly and the grief may remain. In these cases, it is important to utilize the support of priests, pastoral ministers, spiritual directors, and counselors. Let us pray this week for all of us who are grieving and for those who support us. As always, if you have a question or comment, please email Daniel or Megan. Please "like" St. Martin of Tours Facebook page! You can find it at www.facebook.com/stmartinoftourssj When you follow our page, you'll get information about the parish activities! Society of Saint Joseph Through the years, our local Church has benefited from the generosity of many parishioners who included a gift to the church in their will or trust. We are grateful for these extraordinary gifts, big or small, that help pass on the faith to the next generation. On October 14th, our Diocese will be celebrating all parishioners who have made provisions for a gift to the Church in their estate plans at the Annual Legacy Mass and Reception with Bishop McGrath. If you are among those who have planned a legacy gift for a Parish, an elementary Catholic School or any ministry of the Diocese of San Jose, please let the parish office know so that we can make sure you receive a formal invitation for the event. Have you ever thought about becoming a Sister? Do you seek a new path? Are you listening to your heart?
