THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT, MARCH 23, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Luke 1, 26-38 alone records the Annunciation, the encounter in Nazareth of Mary, then almost certainly a teenager, with God s messenger, the Archangel Gabriel, sent to enlist her cooperation in human life s most momentous event. The angel discloses to her that God wants her to be the mother of his Son, who is to establish an unending kingdom and so fulfill God s longed-for promises to Israel. On Tuesday we celebrate this feast that recalls the first stirrings of salvation. The Annunciations is one of the first Gospel events to be artistically depicted. In a gallery of Rome s Catacomb of St. Priscilla there is a simple painting that portrays it on a tomb built some time before the year 200. Two hundred and fifty years later, the curious Syrian Saint Simeon Stylites died after one of the most austere lives in Christian history, in which he spent years living on top of a tall column in Qal at Sim an, about forty miles northeast of Antioch. From there he preached, with considerable success, to passing humanity. Admirers eventually built an impressive shrine around his famous pillar, and later someone assembled a collection of sixty moulds for making devotional tokens for pilgrims. Four of them portray the Annunciation. Almost a thousand years later, an unknown Polish artist created an illustration for an antiphonary, a book for choir members to use when singing the Divine Office. For vespers service, Mary is shown reading at a lectern, teaching the angel as he kneels at her feet. The opening verse of the service is Psalm 43, 2: We have heard, O God, with our ears: our fathers have declared to us, the work thou has wrought in their days, and in the days of old. About fifty years after, the Sicilian artist, Antonello da Messina painted The Virgin Annunciate, a beautiful young Mary wearing a muted blue veil, who sits at a desk gazing out at us from above her prayer book. It is one of the few works to illustrate the Annunciation by showing Mary alone. As she reflects on the astonishing message she has just received, her luminous face displays a faint smile that is both mysterious and serene. American painter Henry Ossawa Tanner s The Annunciation (1898), an arrestingly beautiful modern treatment, depicts Mary sitting on her bed gazing at a shining light that manifests the Archangel s presence. (continued) HOLY THURSDAY RITE OF WASHING OF FEET The Lord Jesus washed the feet of his disciples at the Last Supper as a sign of the new commandment that Christians should love one another. For centuries, the Church has imitated the Lord through the ritual enactment of that commandment in the washing of feet on Holy Thursday. If you would like to be part of the rite of foot washing at our celebration of the Mass of the Lord s Last Supper on Holy Thursday, April 17, please call the rectory/parish office at 201-261-0148 or speak to Monsignor Hubba. PARISH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Confirmation preparation sessions continue on Sundays at 8:15 am in the lower school gym. The last date is March 30. Lenten Penance Service for Grade 8 will be March 26 from 4:30 to 6 pm. First Holy Communion Retreat Day is next Saturday, March 29 from 9 am-12:30 pm in the lower school. Substitute catechists are needed for all sessions. If you can help, please call the Religious Education Office at 201-261-1144. BINGO & BASKET APRIL 24 The Saint Joseph Social Concerns Committee will be sponsoring a Bingo & Basket and Tricky Tray fundraiser to benefit our Brother/Sister Parish of St. Joseph in Jersey City on Thursday evening, April 24, in the lower school gym. Bingo prizes will be COACH and VERA BRADLEY pocketbooks. Beverages and delicious desserts will be served. For reservations, call Joanne Hudes at 201-261-6810. Donation is $20. If you would like to donate a gift for the Tricky Tray, please call Joan at 201-261-4323 or Pat at 201-261-4323. It promises to be a fun evening! However we envision this famous scene, we see in Mary the one who said, in response to God s summons, Let it be done to me according to your will all that anyone can say to God, really. Before Jesus taught us to say Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, his mother left us this lesson by the willing gift of her life. Please keep praying for the candidates and team of our Men s Cornerstone. The Lord is sure to make good things happen as a result of their efforts on their justcompleted weekend. Thanks to all who made it possible. Msgr. David Hubba 3

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from John 4: 5-42. In today s Gospel we learn that the Jewish people did not like the people from Samaria; they did not even talk to them. Also back then, men did not talk to women. So when Jesus went over and spoke to a woman who was drawing water from a well, everyone was shocked. Jesus saw into the woman s heart and knew that she needed God in her life because she had sinned. Jesus saw that she was a good person and sorry for her sin. Jesus showed her kindness, As a result of talking to Jesus, she was happy and told others in the town to speak to Jesus too. Jesus wants us to be like the Samaritan woman. We all need God in our lives so that we can be truly happy. When we are kind to one another we share the happiness God has given us and we help others to find God in their own lives. Jesus spoke to the woman drawing water from the well and she was happy. NOTE TO PARENTS We are still looking for volunteers for this ministry. You do not need any special skill. Just a desire to make a difference for our children. If you have any questions or are interested, please email kids@sjcnj.org MISSION OF THE WEEK Remember our happiness comes from God. Spend a little time each morning thanking God for a new day. 6
