HOSPITALLER BREAKFAST OUTLINES FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES As Priory Hospialler, I organized he 2013 Invesiure Weekend s Hospialler Breakfas wih COL (Re) D. Gray Heppner Jr., MD, OSJ, he Priory s previous Hospialler. Aendees included Nicholas Woolf, Board Chairman of he S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial Group, and he Group s CEO Brigadier Tom Ogilvie-Graham, MBE, OSJ. Afer offering a beauiful opening prayer, The Rev d Canon John Kilgore, MD, KSJ, spoke abou he Priory s Arab American oureach iniiaive, inroducing Dr. Elie Azrak, Presiden of he Naional Arab American Medical Associaion. Dr. Azrak expressed ineres in he work of he Eye Hospial, discussing poenial fuure collaboraions beween our wo organizaions. Brigadier Ogilvie-Graham gave a deailed presenaion on he Eye Hospial s needs and relaed funding opporuniies. He sressed he imporance of receiving unresriced funds from he Priory as he Hospial coninues o expand is oureach and care o hose in need in Palesine. In addiion o hree clinical sies, he Hospial has a mobile van ha brings docors o hose who canno visi one of he clinics, hus improving access for hose who require he mos care. As an example of a regional fundraising iniiaive, Priory Membership Chair Thomas Riggs Cox III, CSJ, repored on a nursing scholarship suppored by he Connecicu Region, of which he is chair. His sraegy was o guaranee he scholarship s funding wih pledges from a few individuals, wih he undersanding ha furher fundraising effors would aemp o broaden he base of suppor. (Thus, he early donors could cover a smaller proporion of he oal.) Vicoria Sheffield, DSJ, he Priory s represenaive on he Hospial Board, hen spoke abou he Hospial s curren and fuure research. Brigadier Ogilvie-Graham expressed enhusiasm for he research iniiaive as a way o solidify he Eye Hospial s ousanding repuaion. A closing discussion was led by Richard Souhby, PhD, (Med), CSJ, on he S John Voluneer Corps, coordinaed joinly by Dr. Souhby and Col. Heppner. Anne Coleman, MD, PhD, OSJ In 2013, The S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial Group reaed a record number of 114,154 paiens, helping families and communiies across Eas Jerusalem, he Wes Bank, and he Gaza Srip. Once again, jus under a hird of paiens (37,157) were under he age of 18. The breakdown is: Jerusalem Hospial 42,176 (14,163 children) Anaba Cenre 21,512 (6,886 children) Hebron Hospial 11,631 (3,725 children) Gaza Clinic 25,769 (8,035 children) Oureach Teams 13,066 (4,348 children) AN INTERVIEW WITH NEW HOSPITAL CEO BRIGADIER TOM OGILVIE-GRAHAM, MBE, OSTJ In 2013, Brigadier Tom Ogilvie-Graham ook over he pos of CEO of he S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial Group. He succeeded he longes-serving CEO of he Group, Rod Bull, who was recenly awarded an OBE for services o healhcare in he Occupied Palesinian Terriories. Here, Tom Ogilvie-Graham shares his background and goals for he Group, and suggess some ways he Priory in he USA can be of assisance in achieving hem. Wih a varied career in he miliary and beyond, why did you come o be involved in humaniarian work? My academic credenials include degrees in veerinary medicine, public healh, psychology and law. My goal has always been o help people (and animals) in disress, especially hrough medical suppor. I have a srong ineres in conservaion, wih a focus on communiy involvemen and susainabiliy. In he Army, I worked on humaniarian missions ranging from Bosnia, Kuwai and Afghanisan o cenral and easern Africa. Wha prepares you o be CEO of he Eye Hospial Group? I have a srong background in operaional level managemen. In he Army, I ook on big challenges a shor noice wihou much preparaion, managing eams of specialiss (ofen medical personnel) in less han ideal condiions. You mus be able o encourage discussion, o draw on each individual s knowledge, and o delegae. Familiariy wih medical research and fundraising is imporan. Saying resuls-oriened is essenial, making decisions and acing on hem vial. As wih many ex-army people, he word managemen o me means leadership working wih people, inspiring and moivaing hem and seing an example. This is far removed from mere adminisraion. I have been an Officer in he Order of S John for nearly 10 years, and grealy admire wha i A he Invesiure Weekend Membership Meeing (l. o r.) Nicholas Woolf, Dr. Anne Coleman and Tom Ogilvie-Graham. does and represens. Now I can work direcly for i. I sough a job ha would leverage my hands-on involvemen in public service in ou-of-he-ordinary circumsances, and I found i. Wha were your firs impressions of he Eye Hospial Group and have hey changed? Plunging ino he final sages of he JCI accrediaion process and several major rebuilds, I had o focus on he major issues of he momen no a bad way of geing ino he deails of how he Hospial works and why hings are done a paricular way. There is always considerable uncerainy, ranging from securiy problems o managing paiens from remoe areas. Planning ahead is essenial, bu you mus live in he presen Eyes on he Fuure Vol. 5, No. 1 2 THE ORDER OF ST JOHN

and deal immediaely wih siuaions as hey arise. Tha is acually a rewarding and saisfying way o live, since i is possible o achieve quick resuls in he Hospial owing o he highly experienced, moivaed saff, and he supporive Board. Wha has been your mos moving experience so far? The saff s posiive aiude and eamwork never fails o impress me. Recenly, we had a snowsorm wihou precedence in Jerusalem. From my window, I saw wo nurses in uniform, an operaing heare assisan in an operaing gown, a securiy guard, a recepionis and wo cleaners all clearing away snow from he main enrance o make i easier and safer for paiens o ener. Many of hese saff had jus worked riple shifs and been in he Hospial over he weekend, as hey were unable o reurn home in he snowsorm and waned o care for he paiens who were also rapped. They were sill prepared o work a bi more, wihou being asked, and do i wih good grace and considerable good humor oo. Wha are he greaes challenges facing he Hospial? Our bigges problem is he income gap we face. Donaed income is sill our principal funding source, ye as of early 2014 we have no ye me our goals. Thus, we mus reduce mobile oureach eams from wo o one, alhough a nurse praciioner from he second eam will coninue o work in parnership wih he Order of Mala s Behlehem mobile oureach. We se up a dynamic new fundraising eam o address he siuaion, bu we mus also maximize paien income from he Palesinian Auhoriy and insurance firms while charging reasonable fees from paiens who can afford o pay. Overall managemen raining mus be improved, so ha saff are uilized o bes effec and he highes sandards of care mainained. Susaining a firs world service o over 114,000 people many in remoe or isolaed areas makes a huge difference o he region. Wihou funding, we simply can do i. Did your recen experience a he Invesiure change your percepion of he Priory and your plans o be involved wih i? I was a Fulbrigh scholar a Cornell Universiy, and have many American friends. I was predisposed o have an ineresing, enjoyable ime bu wha I didn foresee is jus how dynamic, well-run, well-regarded and well-recruied wih fascinaing, alened Confrères he US Priory would be! (The Invesiure ceremony in paricular was one of he mos memorable, dignified occasions of is kind ha I have ever winessed, and I ve seen quie a few.) One of my goals is o spend some more ime on fundraising and liaising wih he Priories. I hope o visi he US Priory several imes in 2014. The curren Prior, his successor and oher senior Members have been exremely supporive. Wha does he US Priory conribue o he Hospial and wha are your ideas for he fuure? Raising money is criical, bu acually he US Priory helps us in many oher ways. The range of alens voluneered is enormous and includes medical experise, informaion echnology and public relaions, as well as inroducions o poliical and governmen figures. Recenly, I was able o mee wih he US Consul General in Jerusalem for help in persuading he Israeli Defense Force (IDF) o allow us o sar shipping building maerials ino Gaza, a reques pending for 12 monhs. Learning how much Hospial suppor comes from he US Priory, he concluded he Hospial could be viewed as a US concern and made a whole-heared approach o he IDF. We received permission o move maerials wihin a week. One possibiliy for he fuure is for he Priory o ake ownership of a new clinic in Hebron s ciy cener, where we can beer serve more paiens. We would saff and equip i wih wha we already have in he curren (rened) locaion. The only cos would be he purchase and redesign of he new faciliy, which could be known as he US Priory s clinic. I am very graeful for any suppor you can give us, no maer how much or how lile. Jus knowing ha you are backing us makes a big difference o my saff and me. As a Confrère, wha is your message o he US Priory? The Hospial is imporan, no jus because we save he sigh of ens of housands of people every year and no jus because of he vas humaniarian (and economic) impac his has. We also build bridges, making hings a lile bi less black and whie poliically, and seing a good Chrisian-inspired example. When effors a peacemaking a a higher level do no produce immediae resuls, someimes i is he work underaken by a Hospial such as ours ha ha can build peace from he ground up. You will noice ha I used he word ours. Tha is how I wan you as Confrères o view he Hospial. I would like you o feel as I do ha you have a sake, hrough he Hospial, in Jerusalem iself jus as he Knighs of S John suppored a hospial here 900 years ago. You should feel ha you are following on and indeed enhancing heir work even now; Jerusalem belongs o he enire world bu we in he Order have a greaer and more imeless connecion han mos! REEM COMES INTO THE LIGHT As Jesus said, Suffer lile children, and forbid hem no, o come uno me: for of such is he kingdom of heaven. (Mahew 19: 14) The mission of The S John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial Group is o preserve and resore he sigh of is paiens of all ages, bu he children i reas are especially precious ones. Reem is one such sory. She is a hree-year-old child from he Wes Bank who suffers from eye problems. When she was only five monhs old, her moher noiced he problems and she ook her for an eye exam o he Eye Hospial. I was quickly deermined ha Reem had a Squin and Myopia, a condiion in which he eye does no refrac ligh properly o focus and see images clearly. Reem was prescribed glasses and paches o help rain and srenghen her eye muscles, ye she refused o wear he glasses and her eye condiion became worse. Urgen surgery was he only opion. She underwen successful surgery and her condiion improved. Reem s parens are delighed ha heir only child s vision had improved and laer said We are graeful o S John Eye Hospial for resoring our child s sigh. FULFILLING THEIR PROMISES: HOW A PILGRIMAGE OF PARTICIPATION: THE WAY TO GO For any Confrère seeking o fully live ou his or her vows, hands-on paricipaion in he daily life of The S. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospial can be ransformaive. I was forunae enough do so in May 2013. Alhough well-ravelled in Israel and he Wes Bank, I had never visied he Hospial. Now, I can say wihou quesion ha my four-day pilgrimage of paricipaion affirms he vial naure of he Hospial s work and our Order s obligaion o suppor i wih annual oblaions and even sponsorship. Joe Dealey (r.) wih his newly invesed daugher and son-in-law Beverly and Drury Ensslen. Eyes on he Fuure Vol. 5, No. 1 Working wih he Hospial, Execuive Direcor Ruh Ann Skaff arranged my pilgrimage and crafed my iinerary. I arrived bearing a duffle packed wih knied baby blankes and caps, gifs from former Priory Hospialler Laird Morimer, KSJ, and friends for he liles and by any measure mos vulnerable paiens. Afer meeing he new Hospial Group CEO and he Nursing Direcor on he firs day, I arose on he second, walked o he Hospial, and climbed ino a convoy of vans ha hreaded is way hrough Jerusalem s rush hour raffic, connecing wih he highway for a 90-minue drive o Anaba. My companions on his and all he Wes Bank visis were Hospial ophhalmologiss and nurses, wo UK S John Ambulance Corps cades and a Hospial Trusee. In Anaba, we oured he Hospial, assised as we were able, and lisened o paien/docor consulaions. Day rips ino he Wes Bank are long and iring bu also exhilaraing and uplifing, and I slep solidly unil my wake-up call from a nearby mosque. My desinaion he nex day was a small clinic in Halhoul, Palesine, in a remoe region known for grapes used in wine producion. Our challenge was o ranspor on unimproved roads he delicae, expensive ophhalmic equipmen needed o se up a four- o six- hour oureach clinic. When i urned ou ha he downown clinic wouldn be available for our use, we were sen o a Red Crescen Hospial sill under consrucion on he ciy s ouskirs. Before seing up, we enjoyed a picnic-syle breakfas a a local amusemen park; he animaed able conversaion demonsraed ha differences in culures, languages and naionaliies don really maer. Evenually, we unloaded and arranged he diagnosic and screening equipmen a he hospial. Relocaing he clinic on such shor noice undoubedly posed 4 commuing problems for paiens, ye he docors and nurses saw nearly 90 paiens, one of whom was he local Palesinian Auhoriy commander. Assising when and where we could, we hree pilgrims escored paiens o and from diagnosic, examining, and screening rooms. We closed and opened window blinds and doors and generally assised he ophhalmic pros o do heir jobs. We were able o observe paien exams hrough a side mouned scope aached o he slilamp insrumen, seeing wha he docor was seeing and lisening o his explanaion o paiens and recommendaions. A he end of he clinic, Dr. Hamzh Albab, a Hebron area denis seleced o head he Red Crescen Hospial, hosed a recepion for us and surprised me wih a radiional Palesinian keffiyeh as a gesure of appreciaion and friendship. I now has a special place in my hear and Texas home. The hird day s rip o Hebron afforded he opporuniy o mee oher members of he S John Eye Hospial Group family. Among hem was Hospial accounan Mohammed Musa, who has an exraordinary connecion o he Hospial: He has an eyeball crafed by a Jerusalem-based Hospial echnician o replace he one he los o disease. My pilgrimage of paricipaion grealy increased my faih in our Order s mission and work; every year since he Invesiure Service of Rededicaion will have even more meaning. I invie every Confrère o consider a fuure pilgrimage o he Holy Land. Visi Jerusalem. Tour your Hospial. Then you also can bear winess o and unhesiaingly suppor he work of he dedicaed men and women who live daily he mission of our Order of S John: Pro Fide (For he faih), Pro Uiliae Hominum (For service o mankind). THE RIGHT THING TO DO: VIVIAN DAVIDSON HEWITT, CSTJ Joseph MacDonald (Joe) Dealey, Jr., CSJ Chair, Souhwes Region The full accoun of Joe Dealey s memorable week can be read online a www. sainjohn.org/eye-hospial/hospial-sories. All Confrères are encouraged o visi he Eye Hospial eiher independenly or wih he Priory s bi-annual pilgrimage o he Holy Land (see page 7). Opimal imes o visi are weekdays beween 7:00 am and 1 pm, when he oupaien clinics are in full operaion. Before you go o Jerusalem, conac Execuive Direcor Ruh Ann Skaff a raskaff@sainjohn.org or 202-510-9691 o make arrangemens for a visi. My passion for ar collecing began on our honeymoon in New York in December 1949. Wih money received a our wedding we purchased good prins from he Whiney Museum and he Museum of Modern Ar. My lae husband John was eaching a Morehouse and I was eaching a he School of Library Service, Alana Universiy. We coninued o collec when we moved o NYC a few years laer, buying wha we loved and waned o live wih. On our second honeymoon, o Haii in1960, we fell in love wih THE ORDER OF ST JOHN

CONFRÈRES TURN THEIR VOWS INTO REALITY is ar and visied Haii ofen, purchasing Haiian ar from 1960 hrough 1985. We became firmly enrenched in Haii s hird generaion ar esablishmen. We became very friendly wih Bishop Voegeli, he Episcopal Vivian Hewi (c) sharing a laugh wih Dr. George Howard and Marcia Mayo, CSJ, a he Invesiure s Friday nigh recepion. Bishop of Haii, credied wih making he church a major paron of Haiian ar. For many years, he bishop held a yearly fundraiser a S. CHIVALRY AND THE NEXT GENERATION The New York Invesiure s Chivalry Breakfas panel addressed he place of chivalry in modern sociey and queried Members o ponder how we migh moivae he nex generaion of young people o become involved wih he Order of S John. In my experience as a professional fundraiser, young people do care abou heir communiies. Ye one of he mos common quesions in more esablished philanhropic groups is how o involve he youh as if hey do no care a all. Ofen, in conversaions abou growing he nex generaion of philanhropiss, I almos expec o hear he phrase hose young whipper snappers! when referring o he youh. I is rue ha he Millennials and Generaion X youh have a myriad of differences due o growing up in a globalized, faspaced world awash wih racing echnological advances. However, when asked, I find i comforing ha when i comes o philanhropic rends he world has no changed. Humans need humans. We yearn for communiy, leadership and inspiraion, and he rising generaions feel his more han mos. They have leap forward o harness he world and found ha hey have los human conneciviy. The creaion of social media demonsraes he collecive desire o find wha has been los o remain close while far away, and o regain connecion. I became involved in he Order because of is connecion o my own ideals and hrough my family. I consider myself lucky, I have family ha have held igh o heir values and radiions. Addiionally, hey invesed effors oward showing me he benefis and joys of having such ideals. A he ime, according o a recen sudy by he Chronicle of Philanhropy, I was similar o 75% of my fellow peers in heir 20 s and 30 s: I gave philanhropically, I was casually involved in several organizaions and I was looking for somehing bigger o inspire me and hrough which I could become meaningfully involved. Then my aun and uncle brough me along on a rip o Israel. Facebook could no have shown he beauy of he people, he good and essenial work of he Hospial, and he moivaing leadership of hose in he Order. I was inspired no by pamphles, websies or an app on my phone bu hrough conversaions, acions and human connecion. My inroducion o he Order can be seen as a case of involvemen hrough legacy. I can also be viewed as a sudy of grass roos oureach on a person-o-person basis, which allows a conversaion o develop on a more inimae level. Young people Carolyn Golra (c.), wih her uncle and aun, Peer Golra, KSJ, and Gail Golra, DSJ, in fron of a bed donaed in memory of Carolyn s grandmoher a he Eye Hospial in Jerusalem. oday are looking for role models in his chaoic world. They crave involvemen in somehing ha maers under he wing of someone who maers o hem. When reviewing our hisory as a Priory in he Unied Saes, we can see ha his is no a new idea. As wrien in he Priory hisory, our founders became acquained wih he Order hrough heir influenial Briish peers. Jus as young people oday, hey desired o become involved wih somehing ha had grea weigh and imporance. The American Sociey was grown hrough he leadership of hose individuals. I has flourished in urbulen imes by people connecing o people by a need for a beacon of ligh garnered from personal involvemen and inspiraion. Today more han ever, our sociey is devoid of inspiraion from public figures. I believe ha he srengh of characer wihin our membership can lead he nex generaion. We can undersand heir ineress and moivaions hrough inrospecion and each lend ourselves o lay he foundaion for he fuure.
