Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16, 2018 A Reflection Dear friends and co-travelers on the journey of faith, This weekend we celebrate Catechetical Sunday. Previous decades, catechesis was understood as merely teaching about faith and doctrines. Therefore, faith was more understood as something to be taught. However, new models of catechesis talk about faith as something caught rather than taught. It is the witnessing and life of Christians that facilitate others to catch faith. Therefore, catechesis now is not a set of lesson plans and classes, but a process. According to Bishop Robert Barron, We are living in a secularized society which continues to squeeze Christianity to the margins We are losing baptized Catholics at an alarming rate. According to Pew Research, nearly one-in-four Hispanic adults (24%) are now former Catholics and most of them are nones, a term used for people with no religious affiliation. Many parents are saddened to report that their children are leaving the Church after preparing for and celebrating initiation sacraments, and after years of Catholic School or parish religion classes. Figures for Baptisms, Church weddings and weekly Mass attendance are down. Those who self-identify as atheists or agnostics or nones now make up roughly 23% of the U.S. adult population. Our conversations within echo-champers may not change this reality. We will have to listen to the prompting of the spirit and be creative. The Spirit of the Lord that guides us is a Spirit of newness and life. It is not institutions that transmit the message of Christ. Institutions can only give us a framework. If we examine our lives, we will realize, we caught faith from someone. Be that someone for others, that is our calling. We are blessed with an incredibly generous cohort of faithful who give Gospel witness in their homes, schools and workplaces. I take this opportunity to thank the dedicated catechists and teachers who witness as missionary disciples in Baptism Prep Class, Children s Catechetical Ministry, CLOW- Children s Liturgy of the Word, Confirmation Prep, EDGE, Life Teen, PIP- Parents in Prayer, RCIA- Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Scripture Study, Sunday Preschool, Vacation Bible Camp, Young Adults, and School. We cannot sit back and observe and expect things to change. We have to be engaged with goodness and love. It is our witness and engagement with everyone September 15 September 22 Saturday 5:00 Pierre Prodis Sunday 7:00 James Kilroy 8:30 Efrain Alvarez 10:00 Enrique Latoza 11:30 St. Martin of Tours Parishioners 6:00 German Geronimo Monday 8:00 Joe Cardoza Tuesday 8:00 Nancie Kalivoda Wednesday 8:00 Justin Semana Thursday 8:00 Right to Life Friday 8:00 Molly Kangley Saturday 8:00 Thomas Antony including nones inside and outside the walls of the church and across society that will help the faith to be caught. If faith is to be caught, we need to reach out, accompany others, share their struggles, and share the joy of the gospel with them. Wish you all a blessed Catechetical Sunday! Thanking you all, Fr. Saj

Faith Formation Corner We are now celebrating the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time and this weekend is Catechetical Sunday! For this week s Faith Formation Corner let us reflect on how we are each called to Catechize. Catechesis is the act of handing on the Word of God intended to inform the faith community and candidates for initiation into the Church about the teachings of Christ, transmitted by the Apostles to the Church. Catechesis also involves the lifelong effort of forming people into witnesses to Christ and opening their hearts to the spiritual transformation given by the Holy Spirit. (usccb.org). The act of Catechesis seems overwhelming if we do not currently feel like experts, but let us look more closely at the definition offered by the US Bishops. First, handing on the Word of God can mean both helping to explain scripture and to introduce others to Jesus because Jesus is the Word of God (John 1:1-3). Second, lifelong effort can remind us that a single year of Sacrament preparation or 20+ years at a Catholic school does not mean that we are done with our own formation into witnesses of Christ. Last, spiritual transformation given by the Holy Spirit clarifies our role in the process. We are intending to inform our family of faith with the Word of God, but it is the gift of the Holy Spirit, which will ultimately transform us. We have many opportunities to grow in our understanding of the Word of God and Mass each week is the best place to start. After Mass, speak with your family and friends about what you heard in the readings and the homily. These conversations are your way of handing on the Word of God. Thank you for your role in Enlisting Witnesses for Jesus Christ!! As always, if you have a question or comment, please email Daniel or Megan. Eucharistic Ministry Taste and see the goodness of serving at the heart of our communal worship. If you are new to the ministry or wish to reactivate your service, please email rita_cortez@yahoo.com. Training time TBD after several have responded. FOOD BOX IS GROWING! Since our Food Box Program's transition to the Wellness Pantry, we are gaining more and more clients, who are grateful for your support! The numbers we serve continue to increase, in part due to word-of-mouth and referrals from our partner, Second Harvest. Our clients love our client-choice model, during which they get to shop for the food they would like to take home. We are accepting donations in the barrels in the church entryways of peanut butter, whole-grain pasta, whole-grain cereal, canned chicken, canned tuna, and canned salmon, along with low-sodium canned vegetables and no-sugar-added canned fruits. Our goal is to promote healthier food options. Please note that we also need food donations for our homeless population. We accept donations of canned (pop-top) chili, and individual-sized nuts and fruit snacks, and granola bars. Mark your calendars now for our distribution on Friday, September 21 at 6pm. Our program is successful based on the support of our volunteers, so please consider joining us. Volunteers of all ages are welcome!
