Choosing a godparent for a child is one of the most important decisions a parent makes for that child s life! The Church s hope is that a godparent will be a life-long example and companion for the child s journey of faith. Much thought and prayer, then, is needed to pick the person(s) who will best fulfill that role. The Church requires that a godparent be a fully initiated Catholic through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist; actively practicing our faith through weekly worship at mass and striving to live according to God s way every day. It s most helpful if the godparent lives nearby and can be a part of the child s ongoing life, participating in important events all along the way. The Church requires only one godparent, although most couples prefer to ask two. If a Christian of another denomination is asked, they must be baptized and can serve only as a Christian witness, not as a godparent. A Catholic who has not been confirmed cannot serve as either a Christian witness or a godparent which makes sense when we understand the sacred responsibility that Catholics accept. If you are expecting or have a newborn, you will want to put preparing for your child s Baptism a high priority. Call Sister Cathy at 429-6811 for an initial interview. Then plan to attend our next group session on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 p.m. Godparents are asked to attend as well, since part of this meeting helps them understand their role and responsibilities. WEDDINGS AT ST. THEODORE S Couples who are contemplating marriage in this coming year are asked to please contact Deacon Angelo as soon as possible to reserve the church before you sign a contract with a reception hall. Deacon Angelo can be reached at 247-4017. HELP CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES ASSIST VICTIMS OF EBOLA Our parish will be taking a second collection the weekend of January 24 & 25 to assist Catholic Relief Services in its efforts to battle the deadly Ebola virus in West Africa. One hundred percent of the money collected will be sent to CRS, the official overseas relief agency of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Among its many efforts, CRS has committed to training thousands of health workers and facilities in infection-control procedures, ensuring safe and dignified burials for victims of Ebola and developing and implementing prevention awareness programs, as well as providing food to more than 120,000 people who have lost their source of income or can no longer meet their food needs due to the outbreak s effect on local economies. Please make your check out to St. Theodore s Church with Ebola Relief in the memo/notes field. Thank you in advance for your donation to help those in dire need. Bishop Matano encourages us to take this special second offering.
