Bishop Anthony Pilla appointed me pastor of St Charles Borromeo Parish at the end of April 1987 and the appointment was effective on June 9 of that year when my predecessor, Msgr Thomas Corrigan retired. I had been serving here as the associate pastor (now called parochial vicar ) since June of 1983. I had been told around St Patrick s Day 1987 that I was to be appointed as the new pastor, but I was also told to keep it quiet until I met with the Bishop in April. It was a difficult secret to keep! Having been at the parish for four years, I had a few ideas about some things that I thought should be accomplished. During March and April, I made up a list of twenty-four items. Over the years, all the things on that list have been addressed. (In truth, a few things were dropped and a few new ideas were added.) When I came here in 1983, there were fourteen weekend Masses. Later that year, the schedule was reduced to eleven Masses; in 1990 it went to ten and in 1994 to eight. Our new 2017 schedule effective next weekend (keep a copy of the bulletin article)--will offer five (maybe six) weekend Masses. Our 1987 parish census numbered 5,600 families; the count today is 3,800. About 60% of our current parishioners come from beyond our formal parish boundaries. (North: Brookpark Road; East: West 54 th Street; South: Day Drive; West: Westminster Drive and the 8400 line.) What can I say about parish and priestly life today compared to thirty years ago? Sadly, Sunday Mass is no longer a priority for many. Perhaps if we understood Sunday worship as more opportunity than obligation, our appreciation might deepen. On the night before Jesus died, He asked us to do this in memory of Him. The Scriptures are clear that the first disciples gathered the Christian community for worship every week. We are called to do the same. Hearing God s word, reflecting on it, and sharing in the Eucharist are significant opportunities to grow in faith and grace. Perhaps because of the many electronic devices and modes of entertainment now available, the parish is not the social center it used to be. Many veteran parish organizations no longer interest a large number of people. However, it is most heartening that so many parishioners will respond to calls to practice the corporal works of mercy. I have witnessed tremendous growth in the numbers of those who feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, and comfort the confined. This June is a triple anniversary for me: forty-one years as a priest, thirty-four years at St Charles, and thirty years as your pastor. There have been some challenges; and also some disappointments--but they are few. I can say that each day has been a joy. I have been truly blessed; I love my faith, the gift of priesthood, and the great privilege to have served for thirty years as pastor of St Charles Borromeo Parish. On this day, and every day, I am grateful to God and to all of you. Many thanks!

St. Charles Borromeo Church June 11, 2017 A Tip of the St Charles Appreciation Hat from Father Carlin Today at the 12:00Noon Mass we will say farewell to Father Terry Grachanin and thank him for his four years of faithful service to St Charles Parish. Those four years have quickly passed since the newlyordained Father Terry joined us in 2013. From the beginning, Father Terry impressed us all with his reverence, thoughtful preaching, friendly manner, and ready smile. He was a popular confessor and, from the beginning, many turned to him for spiritual advice. Father Terry also shared with us his many artistic talents--all infused with God s grace. Our sanctuary, and many other facets of parish life, benefitted from a little touch of Father Terry. However the jury is still out on his fondness for all that incense! When a priest s first assignment is a happy one, that parish becomes like a first love. We all hope that Father Terry will be as happy in future days as we have been to have him serve us. We assure him of our gratitude and we promise our prayers as he now will share his many priestly gifts at: Father Terrence M Grachanin St Brendan Parish 4242 Brendan Lane North Olmsted OH 44070 FOR DAD ON FATHER S DAY Looking for the perfect way to remember Dad on Father's Day?
