PROCLAIMING THE WORD TOGETHER A congregational participation in the Good News according to Mark and John. One: Listen to the story... he was going on a journey... and the crowd trembled, asking, Who is this? One: Listen to the story... he was going on a journey... and the crowd trembled, asking, Who is this? One: Listen to the story... he was going on a journey... and the crowd trembled, asking, Who is this? One: JESUS ENTRY INTO THE CITY When Jesus and his disciples were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples and said to them... They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street... Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven! * HYMN Hosanna, Loud Hosanna ellacombe Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the joyful anthem rang; to Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to His breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. From Olivet they followed mid an exultant crowd, the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud; the Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little children should on His bidding wait. (may be found as stanzas 1 and 2 of hymn 89) REFLECTION Meeting God in the Ecstasy of Glory Matthew Ruffner One: One: JESUS AND THE DISCIPLES GATHER AT THE TABLE It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him... On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, his disciples said to him... They began to be distressed and to say to him one after another, Surely, not I? Surely, not I? Surely, not I? [3]

We lift them to the Lord. One: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. COMMUNION OF THE LORD S SUPPER CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE o waly waly An upper room did our Lord prepare for those he loved until the end; and his disciples still gather there to celebrate their risen friend. A lasting gift Jesus gave his own: to share his bread, his loving cup. Whatever burdens may bow us down, he by his cross shall lift us up. And after supper he washed their feet, for service, too, is sacrament. In Christ our joy shall be made complete: sent out to serve, as he was sent. (May be found as stanzas 1, 2, and 3 of hymn 94) One: When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. And Jesus said to them,... Truly I tell you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.... And all of them said the same: Even though I must die with you, I will not deny you. JESUS PRAYS IN GETHSEMANE One: They went to a place called Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray. REFLECTION Meeting God in the Agony of Suffering Pam Driesell GIVING OF OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Jesus Was An Only Son Bruce Springsteen Jesus was an only son, as he walked up Calvary Hill, his mother Mary walking beside him in the path where his blood spilled. Jesus was an only son in the hills of Nazareth as he lay reading the Psalms of David at his mother s feet. A mother prays, Sleep tight, my child, sleep well, for I ll be at your side. That no shadow, no darkness, no tolling bell, shall pierce your dreams this night. In the garden at Gethsemane, He prayed for the life he d never live; He beseeched his Heavenly Father to remove the cup of death from his lips. Now there s a loss that can never be replaced, a destination that can never be reached, a light you ll never find in another s face, a sea whose distance cannot be breached. Well Jesus kissed his mother s hands, whispered, Mother, still your tears, for remember the soul of the universe willed a world and it appeared. [5]
JESUS IS BETRAYED One: They took Jesus to the high priest; and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes were assembled... Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death; but they found none. Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, saying, We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands. One: But even on this point their testimony did not agree. Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus,... But again he denied it. Then after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, Certainly you are one of them; for you are a Galilean. One: But he began to curese, and he swaore an oath,... At that moment the cock crowed for the second time. Then Peter remembered that Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times. And he broke down and wept. * HYMN Sharing Paschal Bread and Wine tenebrae Refrain: In a grove of olive trees underneath a darkening sky, Jesus warns as he foresees: Peter also will deny. Refrain One: As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate spoke to them again: Then what do you wish me to do with the man you call the King of the Jews? They shouted back, Crucify him! One: Why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Crucify him! One: So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified. [6]
* HYMN Were You There? were you there Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced Him in the side? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb? (may be found as hymn 102) One: He was going on a journey... and the crowd trembled, asking, Who is this? CHARGE AND BENEDICTION All depart quietly in the spirit of contemplation.
