From The Pastor A New Our Father (From an article by America Staff Catholic News Service, Dec 08, 2017) garden (22:40) when Jesus asks the apostles to pray that they not "enter into temptation/testing." Matthew s version includes the line "deliver us from evil. This can mean the Evil One and this could explain lead us not into temptation. For the English translation, Francis suggests: Let us not fall into temptation, but deliver us from the Evil One. Pope Francis wants a change in the present Our Father to clear up the confusion around the phrase lead us not into temptation. He says, That is not a good translation... The one who leads us into temptation is Satan; that s Satan s job. A possible alternative is the phrase do not let us fall into temptation, used by the French church. Perhaps we could follow suit. This line is found in both Matthew s and Luke s (11:4) Gospel. Fr Thomas Stegman, S.J. of Boston College, says the original Greek is the same in both cases. The Greek word for testing or temptation is peirasmos." This can refer to testing (in the sense of determining one's character) or to tempting (in the sense of enticing one to sin). There is also the notion of God who tests or tries as found in passages such as Pss 11:5 and 26:2. But if peirasmos is understood as enticement to sin, then the pope's recommendation is theologically sound and exegetically correct. James 1:13 makes it clear that God does not tempt. Enticement to sin comes from one s own desires. And, in 1 Cor 10:13, Paul insists that God does not allow one to be tempted beyond one's strength, and also provides the way to escape. What the text means is that God controls everything and He helps in time of temptation, but does not lead to sin. A New Mass at BSP! I am very happy to announce that Blessed Sacrament is taking on a new ministry for our Latino members. We have been offering a 4:00 pm Spanish Mass every Sunday for the past two months to test the waters, and have seen the attendance steadily rise. So now, beginning New Year s Eve, Sunday, Dec 31, we are officially adding the 4:00 PM Spanish Mass to our Sunday schedule. Fr Emmet Farrell, a retired priest of the diocese, has generously agreed to celebrate the Mass for our community on a regular basis. This Mass at BSP is in addition to his regular Spanish Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lakeside, so we thank him for taking on this extra burden in his retirement years. Fr Emmet is a true missionary! Everyone is welcome to attend, and I would highly encourage the non-hispanic members of our parish to join in and celebrate along with the Hispanic community at least once or twice in the months ahead just to show their unison and support we are all one family! The French and Spanish translations have already changed. No nos dejes caer en la tentacion is do not let us fall into temptation. The Italian bishops have chosen: do not abandon us in temptation. Francis said, it s not God who pushes me into temptation to see how I fall. No, a father does not do this. A father helps us up immediately. Peirasmos is first used in Luke in 4:13, referring to Jesus temptation by the devil. This could be the best clue to understanding it as testing and for interpreting Luke 11:4, Father Stegman said. The other uses can be taken as testing or temptation. It is also used in Lk 8:13 those with no root fall away in trials, at the last supper (22:28) referring to Jesus trials, and in the Fr. Jon and the Staff of Blessed Sacrament Parish Wish you a Blessed Christmas and Peace in the New Year!

Daily Prayer for Our Priests O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name.) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux Monday ~ December 25 Rev. Edward McGuinness Tuesday ~ December 26 Rev.
