THE CROWN

DO YOU SING? (for non-singers only) When you come to church, do you sing? Why or why not? For several weeks, I have been writing about how we participate at Mass. I began with silence. A very important part of our worship are the seven times we pause for silence. The following week I wrote about movement as part of our worship. Pews that constrict movement are foreign to most of our liturgical history. We have four movements in the form of processions at Mass. Then last week I wrote about the ebb and flow of the Mass. I wrote about how one part flows into the next. God speaks to us, and we respond to him. Today I want to write about the vocal element of worship, particularly about singing. I grew up in the days of the silent Latin Mass. No one said or sung anything during Mass except the priest and altar boy (no altar girls allowed back then). Some progressive priests encouraged everyone say the altar boy parts, or sing some hymns. But for most folks it was a silent 45 minutes. At the High Mass, the choir would sing and we would listen. Vatican II changed all of this, teaching that active vocal participation was the norm. We had to learn to both pray vocally, and how to sing. When I entered Mundelein Seminary in 1963, Vatican II was taking place. Three days a week we made the altar boy responses, but did not sing. Three more days we sang hymns, but did not make the responses. On Sunday, we went to two Masses: a silent Mass with no participation other than receiving Communion, and at the second Mass, we made responses and heard two choirs sing, but Communion was not given. This all struck me as rather strange. I was very grateful for Vatican II that proclaimed singing, responding, and Communion were all normative for all Masses. However, I had a dilemma. I did not sing. I grew up in a family where we never sang. My parents liked to listen to music on the radio or record player, but never once in my life did I hear them sing, not even Happy Birthday when the cake and candles were presented. I believed I was not capable of singing. I only pretended to sing in music class. I once had a teacher who said, Just move your lips, and do not let any sound come out, so you don t ruin our class performance. When I entered the major seminary, I faced the dilemma that I wanted to be a priest and priests had to sing, sometimes alone! I made an appointment to talk to my music professor. When I told him I could not sing, he asked if I could talk. I said, Of course I can. He asked me to say my name slowly. When I said Michael, he had me say it several times, each time more slowly. As I was saying the Mi he found the note on the piano and had me go up and down the scale, singing the Mi of Michael. He proclaimed I was a singer, and a second bass. Then he arranged for me to spend 15 minutes after breakfast each day practicing alone with one of my classmates who was a musician. Within five or six weeks I was able to sing with everyone else, and not be self-conscious about it. I may not have been ready to audition for a lead role in a musical, but I was no longer afraid to sing out at Mass. I share this story because I know a great many of you do not sing when you come to church. I suspect you may have a story similar to mine. Singing, as St. Augustine taught, is twice praying. So many times, the Bible exhorts us to Sing the Lord s praises. To not sing when we worship is to miss out on so much of what our liturgical prayer is all about. I challenge you to rethink your attitude, as I did many years ago. You can begin by picking up the hymnal and at least look at what we are singing. Maybe you can try singing softly, if you fear embarrassing yourself. Liturgical prayer is meant to be sung. That is why the Second Vatican Council did away with the so called low Mass and made singing normative for all Masses. Depending on the occasion, we may have more or less music, but sing we must. Overcome your inhibition, and you will find yourself enjoying your participation at Mass much more. Father Mike Ahlstrom Parish Administrator

I am presently in a Spiritual Guidance Training Program at the Siena Center in Racine, Wisconsin. As part of that requirements I need to see two people monthly from October 2017-October 2018. I am asking if you would allow me to walk with you as I hone my skills as a spiritual guide. Please pray over this and contact me at 708-212-8558 or email me at majcen912@gmail.com. SAINTS ALIVE! LISTEN TO YOUR DREAMS God visits Solomon in a dream, and the scripture story nowhere tells us that Solomon awoke to have this conversation with God! So, still in his dream, Solomon answers God's question about what he desires most, and God grants his request for wisd o m i n a b u n d a n c e. In our waking hours, we are much distracted by work, home, family, traffic, entertainment, and many worries. When we try to think about what we really want out of life, we have trouble even imagining what that might be. But deep inside, our real longings dwell, known to God and to the Holy Spirit. Our dreams, unencumbered by defenses, may hold clues to what our deepest needs are, or what bothers us most. They could be God speaking. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
