First Official Report of Mormon Polygamy in Great Britain 1- [LDS British Mission]. Report of the London Pastoral Conference, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Held in the Freemason's Hall, Great Queen Street, Long Acre, on Saturday and Sunday, December 25th and 26th, 1852. Also, a Brief Half-yearly Report of the London Conference, Held in the Eastern Lecture Hall, Whitechapel, Saturday, Dec. 5th, 1852. London: Printed by J. B. Franklin, [1853]. 12,[4]pp. Octavo [20.5 cm] Very good. Evidence of being previously bound with other material (faint glue residue and stab holes to left edge). This short work represents the first time that the Mormon faithful in Great Britain would learn of sanctioned plural marriage. According to Crawley: "Although 'plurality of wives' is explicitly mentioned only twice in the report, it is clear this topic was the major issue at these meetings. Jacob Gates, the pastor over the four conferences, noted in his journal that during the Sunday afternoon session, he spoke in preparation for the reading of the revelation of July 12, 1843 (D&C 132), after which James Marsden read the revelation to the congregation, Job Smith claimed this was the first public announcement of the practice in Great Britain. The report of Gates's discourse in the pamphlet, however, avoids any explicit mention of Plural Marriage. Flake/Draper 1940. Crawley 772. I am able to locate four institutional copies. Rare. $375

Exceptional Stansbury Expedition with the Maps in Duplicate 2- Stansbury, Howard. Exploration and survey of the valley of the Great Salt Lake of Utah, Including a Reconnoissance of a New Route through the Rocky Mountains. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Company, 1852. Senate Issue. U.S. 32d Cong. Special Sess. Senate. Ex. Doc. No. 3. 487pp. Octavo [23 cm] Contemporary [original?] 3/4 brown calf over green cloth boards with the title on the backstrip. Fore edge marbled blue. Gentle wear to the corners of the boards otherwise near fine. 35 illustrations called for and 35 are present. Lacks the illustration 'Cave on Fremont's Island', but the illustration 'Gunnison's Island and Station from the North' appears twice, we believe this to be a binder's error. All four panoramic fold-outs are in fine condition. The illustrations are bound in between pages 267 and [268]. The 19 plates that accompany the Reptile, Insect and Plant sections are complete. Lacks the four Paleontology plates, we believe these were never bound in, and also a binder's error. Both of the large maps: 'Map of a reconnoissance between Fort Leavenworth on the Missouri River, and the Great Salt Lake in the Territory of Utah' [173 cm x 73] and ' Map of the Great Salt Lake and adjacent country in the Territory of Utah' [76 cm x 108.5 cm] are bound in at the rear. A second set of original maps have been linen backed and are loose in a chemise that matches the monograph's binding. All four maps in nice condition. The two loose maps are bright and in very nice condition. We believe the purpose of this second set was to be used without the trouble of folding and unfolding, the maps that are bound in at the back of the monograph. Captain Stansbury commanded the detachment of the Army's Topographical Engineers which was directed in 1849 to explore and report on the Great Salt Lake Basin. Of particular interest were the newly established Mormon settlements, and the routes and passes through the Rockies for emigrants and possibly a railroad. According to Wheat: "A good many details were added for the country lying between the established Oregon-California trail and Fremont's return from California in 1844, and these, together with the new cartography of the Great Salt Lake region, make the Stansbury expedition map one of the most important of its decade." This is the nicest set of this landmark work that we have ever handled. Flake/Draper 8359. Fales & Flake 53. Moffatt 25, 26. Wheat 764, 765. Auerbach 1255. Wagner/Camp 219:2. Eberstadt 115:1054. Arrington, Quinn wrote this short work as a rebuttal to the Tanners' publications, critical of the LDS Church, including 'Mormonism - Shadow or Reality,' and used funds from a group associated with the LDS Church History to print it. A note and a key were anonymously delivered to Sam Weller with directions to a storage unit in Salt Lake that contained the print run for this work and instructions to distribute these as he saw fit. The Tanners quickly suspected Quinn was the author and asked him, and others, directly. Quinn and Arrington both denied, initially, that Quinn was the author.
