St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, June 24, 2018 A WORD FROM THE PASTOR In the midst of all the challenges in our personal lives, our country, and world, we need to be centered in our Catholic Christian faith as a source of hope and a call genuinely to care for others. The following simple prayer is a great way to begin each day intentionally looking for the presence of God his goodness, wisdom, challenge, and peace within our daily circumstances. "Lord, help me be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as I begin another day. Open my eyes that I may see the beauty around me, especially in the simple things. Open my ears that I may hear all the joyous sounds of your world. Most of all, open my heart to all of the people I will encounter today. Don't let me be too busy to show love and encouragement to others. May all my attitudes and decisions today be influenced by you. When I center my life on you, my days are most fulfilling. Thank you God for giving me another day, another opportunity to serve, especially those with significant needs!" LEAST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Few, if any, of us would be likely to choose John the Baptist as the one to prepare the world to meet its savior. Most of us would feel awkward around John, given his food and clothing choices, and his constant reminders to repent of our sins. John's own father, Zechariah, doubted God's providence when he learned his wife Elizabeth would give birth to John. As a punishment, the angel Gabriel removed Zechariah's ability to speak. Luke's Gospel reading today recounts the moment when Zechariah acknowledges God's plan for his son. He supports Elizabeth--who had trusted in God's providence all along--and regains his voice. Zechariah rejoices in God's wisdom, praising God to all their neighbors. The RubberDucks are giving away 1,000 Webster Slaughter Bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans as part of Cleveland Football Night. Also, watch Matchbox 20 Fireworks after the game. For more information and/or to purchase tickets scan this code or visit our webpage at www.stvincentchurch.com. John's story reminds us how our instincts often run counter to God's wisdom. Though we avoid awkward and difficult people, God chooses a locust-eating man to show us the way to Jesus. The lesson of John the Baptist is never to underestimate the power and wisdom of God. This inspires hope! We, like John, are "fearfully, wonderfully made" (Psalm 139). God has beautiful plans for each of us.

St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Five Sunday, June 24, 2018 FAMILY PERSPECTIVES John the Baptist is a model for the New Evangelization. Today s Gospel prophesied exactly what he would do. In the power of the Holy Spirit, he would turn many in Israel to the Lord, turn the hearts of parents toward their children and teach the disobedient to understand righteousness. All Christian disciples are called to evangelize. All Christian families are to form and prepare a people fit for the Lord. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. PETER S PENCE COLLECTION Next week, we will take the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. For more information, visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence Please keep in prayer those who have recently passed away. Jerome T. Jurgens Joseph Kulesza Leo Walter Jr. Agnes Richie Eleanor T. Lancy

FOLLOWING THE 11 a.m. MASS Meet on the Church s front patio America Needs Our Lady of Fatima In the present age of the Church, when the Mother of Jesus should be most exalted, sometimes we find instead that her esteem has been diminished and her loving messages to her children have been neglected or ignored. With Marriage and Family under assault, we who wish to defend our Catholic values and carry out our mission of evangelization should realize one thing: "Mary is Awesome!" We can make amends to our blessed Mother, if we have forgotten her, by calling upon her aid in the prayers of the Rosary, as she has so often recommended at Fatima and in her many appearances around the world. In his book, The Secret of the Rosary, Saint Louis de Montfort said: "Public prayer is far more powerful than private prayer to appease the anger of God and call down His mercy, and Holy Mother Church, guided by the Holy Ghost, has always advocated public prayer in times of public tragedy and suffering." Will you please join us and ask for grace from our holy 'Mother of the Church' in these troubled times? Love your Mother and Pray the Rosary with us as a public witness for the protection of the sanctity of Marriage!
