St. Vincent de Paul Church Page Four Sunday, June 24, 2018 A WORD FROM THE PASTOR In the midst of all the challenges in our personal lives, our country, and world, we need to be centered in our Catholic Christian faith as a source of hope and a call genuinely to care for others. The following simple prayer is a great way to begin each day intentionally looking for the presence of God his goodness, wisdom, challenge, and peace within our daily circumstances. "Lord, help me be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit as I begin another day. Open my eyes that I may see the beauty around me, especially in the simple things. Open my ears that I may hear all the joyous sounds of your world. Most of all, open my heart to all of the people I will encounter today. Don't let me be too busy to show love and encouragement to others. May all my attitudes and decisions today be influenced by you. When I center my life on you, my days are most fulfilling. Thank you God for giving me another day, another opportunity to serve, especially those with significant needs!" LEAST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Few, if any, of us would be likely to choose John the Baptist as the one to prepare the world to meet its savior. Most of us would feel awkward around John, given his food and clothing choices, and his constant reminders to repent of our sins. John's own father, Zechariah, doubted God's providence when he learned his wife Elizabeth would give birth to John. As a punishment, the angel Gabriel removed Zechariah's ability to speak. Luke's Gospel reading today recounts the moment when Zechariah acknowledges God's plan for his son. He supports Elizabeth--who had trusted in God's providence all along--and regains his voice. Zechariah rejoices in God's wisdom, praising God to all their neighbors. In the power of the Holy Spirit, he would turn many in Israel to the Lord, turn the hearts of parents toward their children and teach the disobedient to understand righteousness. All Christian disciples are called to evangelize. All Christian families are to form and prepare a people fit for the Lord. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
