Sheil CORE Seminar: The Gift of Discipleship Discipleship means following the teachings of the Master. It is to be disciplined in our lives. How does our discipleship in Christ manifest itself in our lives? How do we live morally and justly? How do we respond to the world that way? How do we make decisions when the situation is complicated? What is the place of Catholic Social Teaching both as a guide and a witness? This seminar explores those questions and more. REGISTER http://bit.ly/2nw0mgv: Tim Higgins facilitates the sessions The seminar meets Tuesdays - 6:05-7:55 pm October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 Free for students $5 for associate at Sheil or faculty and staff at Northwestern $25 for guests 4 Heresies that Changed the Church CTT Seminar Throughout Church history, theological doctrine was often articulated in response to teachings of otherwise faithful people which the Church finally decided were erroneous statements of faith. Those moments in our past forced the Church to become more precise in its own language and understanding. This seminar will examine 4 of the heretical notions that helped the Church define where it stood and what it believed and the impact that continues to have today. REGISTER: http://bit.ly/2nu4twh The seminar will meet 4 Mondays from 7-8pm October 22, 29, November 5, November 26 (please note the skipped weeks) Free for students $5 for associate at Sheil or faculty and staff at Northwestern Bible Explorers Resumes Thursday October 11 @ 5:45 pm - 7:00 pm New Members Welcome! Activities & Ministry Fair Sunday, October 14 The Sheil Activities & Ministry Fair is Sunday, October 14 following all Masses. Come see all that Sheil has to offer you. This is an opportunity to sign up for groups & ministries that allow you to share your time and talent. Become an active member of the Sheil community! You belong here. Sheil Community Celebrates a Golden Jubilee of our Center and The Christ the Teacher Chapel The Sheil community is celebrating its 50th anniversary of our chapel and center. The first Mass was celebrated in our chapel, in October 1968. This anniversary provides a great opportunity to mark the occasion with a renewal of its liturgical focus as a faith community, and include a renewal of the liturgical space. A team representing the community has been meeting over the past several months to explore how best to celebrate our anniversary and to develop recommendations for refreshing and updating the liturgical space. There will be much more information coming in the weeks and months ahead. We will kick off our year of renewal Sunday, October 7 with a special blessing and celebration of the chapel at all Masses with receptions to follow the morning Masses. Please join us.

Destinations Career Explorations is a program designed for students to meet and talk with outstanding professionals in their field of work at quarterly panel presentations and discussions; answering such question as What s it like where I think I am going.

Volunteers Needed for the Sheil Sunday Nursery fall fundraiser Sunday October 14 Taco Fiesta This year, the money raised will go toward renovating the new house acquired for emergency housing service to the community. The event begins with an ourdoor Mass at 11:30 a.m. followed by a taco lunch at their Center, 5114 S. Elizabeth St. Chicago, IL 60609. Tickets are $50/ person. If you wish to make a donation to the fundraiser or buy tickets to attend, you can write a check and mail it to : PBMR Attn: Fall Fundraiser 5114 S. Elizabeth St. Chicago, IL 60609 Or go to the event website: PBMR.org or http://bit.ly/2dunt4s The PBMR is a network of reconciliation ministries inspired by a spirituality of the Precious Blood. Motivated by the belief that "those who were once far off have been brought near through the blood of Christ" (Eph. 2:13), they work as agents of reconciliation. Sheil has served in partnership with PBMR for several years. Several of our community members visit the residents at the Juvenile Cook County Detention Center with this wonderful organization. The Sheil Nursery offers parents the opportunity to worship in peace during the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Sunday Masses while leaving their small children in a safe, playful and comforting place. The nursery is open to infants, toddlers and preschool children. It is supervised and staffed by Northwestern students and associate volunteers under the direction of Natalie Conrardy who began the nursery ministry over 20 years ago. We encourage parents to take advantage of this ministry and ask for student and associate volunteers to step forward to help. If you would like to serve our community as a nursery volunteer please contact Natalie Conrardy. at nlake@orthosns.com. Spirituality Reading Group New Members Welcome! The group meets on the second Sunday of the month after the 9:30 Mass, from 10:45 till 12:00. The next meeting will take place in the Sheil library on October 8. All are welcome. During NU's school year, students from ages 4 (pre-kindergarten) through 13 (eight grade) meet on Sunday mornings to attend Mass and receive religious instruction. In this unique model, Sheil's students are the teachers - sharing their faith with a younger generation, as well as gaining valuable service and teaching experience.
