Scottsdale Presbyterian Church The Messenger October, 2017 Vol. 37 Issue 10 Since 1958 Pastor's Column 'All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord endures for ever. That word is the good news that was announced to you." 1 Peter 1:24 25 At the end of October, Christians will celebrate the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther s nailing his Ninety-Five Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, Germany. The theses, which criticized the sale of indulgences by church officials, are considered the opening salvo in the Protestant Reformation a movement that emphasized individual relationships with God and salvation through faith alone. Luther is also celebrated for a second piece of writing: his translation of the Bible into German. After Pope Leo X excommunicated Luther in 1521, the reformer took refuge inside Wartburg Castle. There he completed his translation of the New Testament, first printed in September 1522. That same year, the moto Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum ( The Word of the Lord Endures Forever ) began being used by German rulers who embraced the fledgling Protestant movement. The motto is based on 1 Peter 1:24 25. It was a confident expression of the enduring power and authority of God s Word. John Calvin, who plays a vital role in Presbyterian and Reformed Church history, is considered a member of the second generation of the Reformation. Calvin wrote of Luther, We maintain, that at the commencement when God raised up Luther and others, who held forth a torch to light us into the way of salvation, and who, by their ministry, founded and reared our churches those heads of doctrine in which the truth of our religion, those in which the pure and legitimate worship of God, and those in which the salvation of men are comprehended, were in a great measure obsolete. Earlier in 2017, the World Communion of Reformed Churches, (which includes ECO and many other Presbyterian churches) formally endorsed the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification. This is a document created, and agreed to, by the Roman Catholic Church and Lutheran churches. It states that all of these churches now share "a common understanding of our justification by God s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. To the parties involved, this essentially resolves the 500-year-old conflict over the nature of justification which was at the root of the Protestant Reformation. God continues to reform both His church and His people as we turn in faith to him. Let us celebrate God s ongoing work. In the words of the old hymn, Revive us again. In His service, Pastor Bruce And I am surely with you always Matthew 28:20 A nd surely I am with you always page 1 page 1

When the mornings are cooler, the resident mockingbird sings outside my patio door, which now remains open to allow the cool air to enter! Sometimes the song goes on for many moments and the characteristic variety of pitches, melodies and chirps is very entertaining to my musical ear! The words all nature sings and round me rings the music of the spheres come to mind. As I am writing, the mockingbird has stopped but another bird has begun the morning song I often hear, which is an almost rhythmic chirp first 2 chirps, then 4, then 3, over and over! The singing of the birds brings to mind the ringing and singing that again is heard every Wednesday evening in the SPC choir room! God has blessed us with a skilled music team! Thankfully we enjoy each other s company so the rehearsal time passes quickly. This fall our choir rehearsals have begun with warm-ups that enhance our focus, vowel sounds and interval studies to reinforce our sight-reading skills. Just like the newly inspired singing of the birds in the cooler weather, our human voices and our minds may be in need of a tune-up! It won t be long before we do our first read-through of Christmas music so we need to be prepared! My midwest mind-set has always had a problem with planning or rehearsing Christmas songs with the AC running! I am thankful for each member of the SPC music team God bless them all! There s always room for one more so please let us know if you may be considering becoming a part of the handbell choir, the adult choir or the Praise Band. Let everything that has breath, praise the Lord! Carol Petersen, Director of Music

This is over 2,100 lbs. more than last year and last year was already a huge jump from previous years. Both of the food banks expressed their gratitude many times. Stating that this helped them a lot as many people are gone for the summer and donations are few and far between. In addition to the food and hygiene products each food bank was sent donations of money. I will send you that total when I have it. As always, it is an honor to partner with you for this food drive. Fall Presbytery Report Through the wonders of modern technology, ECO s Presbytery of the West held its September 22-23 meeting both in Arizona and Colorado at the same time. The Arizona part of the meeting gathered at Christ Presbyterian Church in Goodyear for worship, learning and fellowship. During that meeting, We welcomed Northminster Presbyterian Church, Phoenix as the newest ECO congregation in Arizona. Learned about ECO s new church plant in central Phoenix. Heard from Mountain View Presbyterian Church, Scottsdale as they continue transitioning from the PC(USA) to ECO. Pastor Bruce led the report from the Theological Task Force recommending that our presbytery concur with the Proposal from the Presbytery of Northwest regarding the Confessions of ECO. Among other things, it would lift up the Apostle s Creed, the Nicene Creed, the Heidelberg Catechism, the Westminster Standards, and the Theological Declaration of Barmen as ECO s Foundational Statements of Faith. Our Presbytery will also urge official ties be pursued between ECO and the Lausanne Movement on world-wide evangelization. Decided that the name of the new ECO Presbytery in Arizona will be Hope Presbytery. Hope Presbytery is expected to be spun off from the Presbytery of the West in January of next year.

Teen Challenge Men Choir Returning October 22 nd Teen Challenge serves both teens and adults and is the best program in the world for addressing the nature of drug and alcohol addictions. Since 1965, Teen Challenge of Arizona has been proclaiming the message of Christ s love and grace to people in need of help and hope. On Sunday October 22 nd, their Men s Choir will return to SPC to worship with us and share their personal stories of God s transforming power. After worship, our Family Focus Team is preparing lunch for us so that we can spend more time with these men and encourage them. Prayer and Support for ECO Churches in Texas and Florida Dear Friends, Members of the Synod staff have been in contact with churches affected by the devastating storms in the Southeast; most recently those that endured Hurricane Irma in Florida. Though many churches themselves had minor structural damage, some are still without power, and many have downed trees and other property issues to deal with. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, And He brought them out of their distresses. He caused the storm to be still, So that the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad because they were quiet, So He guided them to their desired haven. - Psalm 107:28-30 It is amazing to see God at work in the midst of a terrible situation. We are hearing stories of our churches serving as shelters and deeply caring for the communities in which they serve. Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church is one such example. They are set up to be a Red Cross shelter, but when the Red Cross staff couldn't make it in, the good folks of MDPC stepped up and filled in the gaps. Several of these churches have their own funds set up to receive donations as well. We envision the need for work teams in the Keys, just as they are in Houston now, in the coming weeks. We will keep you informed of those opportunities. Thank you for your continued support and prayers, The ECO Synod Office

Thank you! Thank you! GreenStone Ministry wishes to thank SPC from the bottom of our hearts for the recent generous donation given for Bible Distribution. The above picture from this year s distribution tells the story! The boxes coming off the roof of the green van are filled with 40 bibles. How is GreenStone Ministry different? Bibles are brought by a team and personally handed to thankful believers in remote areas of Ethiopia! 90% of the bibles go to people who cannot even afford to buy a bible! The people often walk for miles! Sometimes even the team walks for miles when the van cannot navigate the rough road! Your generous gift will be shared in November this year with 200 newly converted monks who recently went through training to become pastors but have no personal bibles. Thank you again for your faithful support! God bless you! Your friends at GreenStone Ministry
