Scottsdale Presbyterian Church The Messenger September, 2018 Vol. 38 Issue 9 Since 1958 Pastor's Column "A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?" Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 When I was a boy, I was never very good at writing book reports at least I did not often enjoy the process. The best time I ever had writing a book report was in second grade. The book was Helen Bauer s California Mission Days and I was required to write one page each on the twenty-one different missions she described. The fun part was due to the paper I was required to use: twenty-one pages all cut out in the shape of the state of California. My father even helped me cut out a wooden cover for my book report in that same shape. I still have it. But from second grade through college, book reports remained mainly a chore. It felt like busywork. Now, of course, I am regularly asked to write book reviews for publication. I am even asked to write book endorsements from time to time. What changed? Repeated practice was the main ingredient in my transformation. That practice was coupled with encouraging words from people I knew and respected. That made me a better writer. That, in turn, made writing itself more enjoyable. Like writing, faith is best developed through practice. When practicing your faith is coupled with encouraging words from people who are also living out their own faith in Christ, faith can grow. It may take time, but your faith will grow if you don t lose heart. In His service, Pastor Bruce page 1 And I am surely with you always Matthew 28:20 page 1
Crusing down the river on a Sunday afternoon... On my first day back from a wonderful vacation in the northwest, I am doing the usual unpacking, figuring out the gas mileage, returning the rental car, letting people know I am home again safely and sharing a time of thankful praise on the phone with my good friend! The memories of this very special Hansen Family Reunion will linger throughout the lifetimes of all the generations represented. The first cousin picture keeps getting smaller and fortunately the 2nd and 3rd cousin pictures continue to grow! A total of 75 or so were in attendance, 17 from my oldest brother s family who live in Australia and Florida. The youngest family member in attendance was 1 month old and the oldest 94. I communicated with Juanita Ruth Johnson about the possibility of seeing her in her summer place but the time did not permit. But I did drive through the area near where she enjoys her summers. Speaking of driving I did a bit of it, about 3400 miles total. My route to Washington brought me through Las Vegas, Zion, Bryce, the Snake River in Idaho (Shoshone Falls), and to my final destination, Packwood, WA. The way home was along the Oregon Coastline on the 101 until Ventura, CA. I drove across the Golden Gate Bridge without stopping, watched the fishing boats on the Rogue River that emptied into the ocean at Gold Beach, and with just the right amount of fog in the air, saw the beauty of the Oregon coastline in all its glory! I am so pleased that the Redemption pianist, Sarah Koehler, offered to cover for me. I know you enjoyed her music. Thanks also to Brett for stepping up as always! As previously announced, the fall rehearsal schedule resumes Wednesday, Sept 5 as follows: Handbell Choir 6PM - 6:50 Adult Choir 7PM - 8:10 Praise Band Rehearses 8AM Sun AM
Prayer Requests Our prayer chain consists of people who would be happy to pray for you, your loved ones, and for any other praises or concerns you may have. Please call the church office or to have your requests added to the prayer chain. Preaching Schedule Sept 2 Ephesians 3:7-21 Kingdom, Power, Glory Sept 9 John 1:19-34 He Went That Way Sept 16 John 2:1-12 Everyday Miracles Sept 23 John 3:1-21 Light in Dark Places Sept 30 John 4:1-30 A Time is Coming 9/11 Multi-faith Food Drive In an effort to change the 9/11 commemoration narrative from one of sadness to one of service, Scottsdale Presbyterian Church and Redemption Church Scottsdale are once again joining together with local churches, temples, mosques, schools and other organizations in an act of love and compassion. It is the seventh consecutive year of the 9/11 Multi-faith Food Drive. Last year, over 6,600 pounds of food and hygiene items were collected for those in need. Please bring in your food donation on or before Sunday, September 9th. And I am surely with you always Matthew 28:20 page 3
Redemption Church Scottsdale Parts Ways with Redemption Church Corporate Through a series of conversations between Redemption Corporate and Redemption Church Scottsdale, the two bodies have come to a mutual conclusion to part ways. As of January 1st, Redemption Church Scottsdale will no longer be a part of Redemption Corporate. This means that Redemption Scottsdale is now a congregation in search of a new denominational and networking home. Pastor Sean continues to have productive conversations with ECO leaders from coast to coast, so we will see how the Lord will continue to rule and overrule this situation. Leaving a denomination home is not easy (as we know all too well). So, let s all join together in praying for them at this time. Sept 9th Congregational Question and Answer Session A Congregational Meeting for Questions and Answers has been called by our Session for Sunday, September 9th following worship. The focus will be on the continued discussions regarding the possibility of Scottsdale Presbyterian Church and Redemption Church Scottsdale coming together. Where are we in discussion? Our clerk of session, Tina Sedlock, continues to compile a master list of the frequently asked questions. Please contact any of our elder below with your questions about this discussion process: ELDERS Jeffrey Barton jeffbart@gmail.com Bob Howard, Jr robert@arizonalawgroup.com Brett Recen bgrecen@hotmail.com Tina Sedlock tmpeap@yahoo.com Terry Linnig howziz@hotmail.com Eric Palumbo eapers05@yahoo.com SPC Comedy Show on the SPC Friday, Oct. 5th On Friday, October 5, 2018 at 7:00pm, Scottsdale Presbyterian Church presents Comedy on the Grass, a clean comedy show. The headliner will be Andrew Norelli, who has been on Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Late Show with David Letterman, Comedy Central and has also done a TED Talk. Local comic Keith Ellis will feature, and our own Bob Howard will open the show. Admission is free but we will take a free will offering after the show with a suggested donation of $5. Refreshments will be available at nominal costs and we could use a few volunteers to help us man the concession stand and donate the use of some cooler chests. This is going to be a fun show and a great way to introduce your friends to the church campus. Please pass the word by social media and bring as many as you can. The show will last about an hour and a half.

A film editor by trade (his Hollywood credits include over 65 feature films and six years of the TV series M*A*S*H ), David started harp lessons in his mid-twenties as a relaxation therapy. He never intended to play the harp professionally, but fate has taken him in this direction. He is currently principal harp with the Musica Nova Orchestra, North Valley Symphony, and the Prescott Pops Orchestra. He has performed with the Phoenix Symphony, Opera El Paso, Symphony of the West Valley, Flagstaff Symphony, Prescott Chamber Orchestra, Arizona Opera, Arizona Theater Company and many shows with TheaterWorks. David has been a guest lecturer at the Royal College of Music in London as well as Dublin, Ireland and Adelaide, Australia, and all over the United States. In addition to his harp work David also continues to work in videotape editing and production. As far as he can tell, he may be the only person who has simultaneously been a Hollywood film editor and a professional harpist. He lives in Glendale, Arizona with his four dachshunds, Coney Island Hot Dog, CC (short for Chili Cheese Dog), Ootsie (short for Onions On The Side) and Delaney and a huge video editing computer.
