Chaplain s Corner 8 The Gift As I write this, I have just learned of the passing of my Auntie Diane. Throughout much of my lifetime, Diane and I were not very close. In fact, you might say that we were estranged from each other for many years. But later in life, we reconciled our relationship and our love for one another was rekindled. The cause of transformation in our relationship took the form of a gift. The gift of forgiveness. Several years ago, I reconnected with Diane at a family gathering. It had been at least 25 years since I had seen her last. When we talked, I saw that she was not the same person that I remembered from all those years ago. She was different; somehow she had changed. As we talked, she said that she was so glad that she was able to see me because she wanted to ask me something. She simply said Forgive me. Two words: forgive me. I was stunned to hear her say this. What did she need forgiveness from me for? After all, we haven t so much as talked to one another in several years. What could she possibly have done to me that she felt the she needed to confess to me? She told me about things said and done many years ago. I responded in the only way I could, by telling her that of course she was forgiven and that I did not even recall the events she had been burdened by all these years. She later said that by the very act of seeking forgiveness, she felt as if a tremendous weight had been lifted from her shoulders. It truly was a gift for her to be unburdened. The gift for me out of all of this was the restoration of a relationship with my Aunt. We became closer than we have ever been in our lives. I guess forgiveness is a gift for the giver and the receiver both. In the Christian faith community, we refer to this as the gift of grace. God forgiving us; freeing us from the burden of the guilt and sin that we carry throughout our lifetimes. It all begins with seeking forgiveness. Two words: forgive me. -Chaplain Larry Jesion
