WOMEN'S CORNERSTONE MEETING AUGUST 21 Plan to attend our Cornerstone meeting this Wednesday evening, August 21 at 8:00 pm in the K of C Hall, River Road, New Milford. Our Cornerstone Retreat brings us together from many places, but during the 26-hour retreat we come to realize that we're not alone and we're not strangers. Our monthly meetings keep us together as sisters in the Lord, planning and praying for our next weekend. We pray, plan, sing, share and laugh together as we journey forward with the help of the Holy Spirit. If you have made a Cornerstone Retreat, even if at another parish, you are welcome to join us Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm and see for yourself what a wonderful community of sisters awaits you!

TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, AUGUST 18, 2013 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK If you are interested in reading a good book about our Faith, a number of them have appeared recently. One of the following might interest you. William A Donohue s Why Catholicism Matters: How Catholic Virtues Can Reshape Society in the 21st Century (Image Books/Doubleday, 2012) is a spirited defense of our religion and a wide-ranging description of how it benefits everyone by the head of the Catholic League for Civil Rights. (The editing of its introduction is a bit shaky, but the chapters address key issues of the day and make you proud to be Catholic.) Brian Regan s Gothic Pride: The Story of Building a Great Cathedral in Newark (Rivergate Books/ Rutgers University Press, 2012) is about our Archdiocese s magnificent Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the most expensive church ever built in America. Regan, a curator at New York s renowned Morgan Library, offers many interesting human details about its creation. Robert Louis Wilken s The First Thousand Years: A Global History of Christianity (Yale University Press, 2012) uses short, gracefully written chapters to present a complex history with clarity. He includes many details about Christianity s early eastward expansion that are not widely known. Richarc Hanser s A Noble Treason: The Story of Sophie Scholl and the White Rose Revolt Against Hitler (Ignatius Press, 2012) tells of a brave but futile resistance to Nazi tyranny by a small group of Munich students and one of their professors during World War II. Scott Hahn s Consuming the Word: The New Testament and the Eucharist in the Early Church (Image, 2013) describes the close connection between the Mass and Scripture with his typically clear explanatory skill. Pope Benedict XVI s The Virtues (Our Sunday Visitor, 2010) covers the divine gifts that bring us strength in this short work about truths that will never cease to be crucial for us. Russell Shaw s American Church: The Remarkable Rise, Meteoric Fall, and Uncertain Future of Catholicism in America (Ignatius Press, 2013) is a searching exploration of current concerns by a veteran Catholic journalist and columnist for Columbia, the magazine of the Knights of Columbus. Milton Walsh s Witness of the Saints (Ignatius Press, 2012) takes selections from the great treasury of readings from the Church s foremost saints and writers that is found in the Liturgy of the Hours (or Divine Office) the church s official prayer book (continued above) 3 and arranges them according to the chief topics of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, making these passages usefully available to all who want to know the Faith better. Monsignor David Hubba SIGN UP NOW! MARIAN PILGRIMAGE TO THE BASILICA OF THE NATIONAL SHRINE WASHINGTON, D.C. OCTOBER 26 The Archdiocese of Newark is sponsoring a one-day pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Plan to be part of this archdiocesan act of love and devotion honoring the Mother of God and celebrating the Year of Faith. A bus will leave from Saint Joseph Parish and return the same day. SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from Saint Luke 12:49-53. Have you ever noticed that we are all different? Some of us are good at sports while others are good in math or science. We also don t always agree with each other. Look at your own family for a moment. Do you always agree with your sisters or brothers? Do you always agree with what your parents tell you to do? In today s Gospel, Jesus tells us that disagreements are normal. When Jesus traveled from town to town, there were some people who believed in him and wanted to follow him and some who ignored him. Not everyone believed that he was the Son of God. Some people love Jesus with their whole hearts and their lives really show it. There are other people who don t know about Jesus or who find it too difficult to follow him. But Jesus tells us that whether people agree with us or not, we are to love everyone. As followers of Jesus, we need to stay close to him and he will help us to stay strong when other people do not agree with us. He will help us to show others by our good example what it means to follow Jesus. Jesus tells us that there will always be divisions in households and between people. MISSION OF THE WEEK Every day I will pray this prayer: Dear God, help me to tell others the Good News about Jesus and always try to live as Jesus did. Amen. 6
