PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ This week I am happy to announce that our St. Beatrice 2017 Woman of the Year is Margaret Saathoff. If you attend our 10am Mass you may know Margaret, because she is a regular attendee at the 10am, where she sits with her regular group of St. Beatrice friends. Some of her family members are also ixtures at the 10am her sister Karen is one of the cantors, and her nephew Bob is one of the lectors. Margaret has been a member of St. Beatrice for her entire life, and she has been an active member of the Women s Club for two years. She helps with passing out information at meetings, welcoming members, and assisting with cleanup at meetings. At the spring and fall bake sales, Margaret works from start to inish (I can personally testify to that at each bake sale I always see her helping with whatever is needed, from setup to cleanup to everything in between). Margaret was also a volunteer at St. Beatrice School for more than 10 years, which included helping with monthly pizza day luncheons, assisting in the pre-school classrooms, and working as an of ice helper. Please join me in congratulating Margaret for the many ways that she has given of herself by helping with ministries here at St. Beatrice. Congratulations, Margaret, on a well-deserved honor! I also want to acknowledge and congratulate the of icers for our Women s Club for 2017-18. They are: President Karen Lima; Vice President Sue Chrabaszcz; Secretary Mary Jo Remian; and Treasurer Mary Ellen Stendebach. Thank you to all of you for your willingness to serve! This weekend I also want to remind everyone why, as usual, you will not see me for several weekends during the summer at the 8am & 10am Masses (and sometimes the 12pm). Every summer I compete in a number of triathlons (swim, bike, run), and the irst of my races is today, May 21 st. Throughout the majority of the year I take all of the weekend Masses here, precisely so that I can take some Sundays off during the summer to compete in triathlons (because almost all triathlons are on Sunday mornings, which isn t helpful for me!) I will be here at the Saturday night Masses, but for several weekends I ll be doing my races on Sunday mornings. Our two weekend helpers, Fr. Dan Flens and Fr. Bob Flack, are very generous in helping to cover Masses for me, and I am very grateful for their help. Finally, Deacon Ron and Alyce s daughter Raechel got married this past Saturday, May 13 th, in a service presided over by Deacon Ron. Their other daughter Katie will be getting married in September of this year. If you see Deacon Ron and his wife Alyce, please join me in congratulating them. Below are two photos from the happy day. Pictured in the left photo are: Alyce, Shawn (the groom), Raechel, Katie, and Deacon Ron. The right photo is of Deacon Ron and Raechel s irst dance (it was a tearjerker!) St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The custom of genuflection is not found everywhere in the Catholic Church. In fact, it is a bit of breach of etiquette to genuflect in most Eastern Catholic Churches. If you re visiting an Eastern Catholic or an Orthodox church, the when in Rome rule should be adopted. Watch what the home team is doing! Usually, Eastern Catholics and Orthodox reserve a small portion of the eucharistic bread for the dying in a cupboard or eucharistic dove, but it is not a center of attention or devotion. The rule is to make a profound bow, called a metasis, toward the altar bowing deeply while making the sign of the cross. East and West split years before we Westerners began to reserve the Blessed Sacrament prominently in our churches. Thus, the East never changed the original custom of bowing toward the altar. Increasingly, as tabernacles became more widespread in the West and moved into prominent placement within churches, we replaced the bow toward the altar with a genuflection toward the Blessed Sacrament when its place of reservation is visible. In a church where the Blessed Sacrament is reserved in a special chapel or off the main axis of the building, normally you should bow toward the altar when you enter your pew, because the eucharistic table is the principal sign of Christ s presence in the church building. If you have ever participated in the liturgy of Dedication of a Church and Altar, there is no mistaking the altar s significance: it is first slathered with chrism and then adorned with a brazier billowing clouds of incense that fill the whole church as a sign of prayer and presence! Anyone is welcome to be gift bearer. PAGE THREE Sixth Sunday of Easter In the Gospel today, Jesus says to us: If you love me, you will keep my commandments...whoever loves me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and reveal myself to him. When we give to the poor, God indeed pours his love, peace and joy into our hearts, into our lives and through us into the hearts of the poor. PEOPLE OF HOPE Throughout this Easter season the readings have drawn us into the experience of the early church. We have tasted the excitement and zeal of the first Christians. Now, with them, we listen to the words of Saint Peter, who reminds us that when people notice that we are people of hope, we should be ready to explain why. This challenges us. Do others even notice that we are people of hope? In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? In today s Gospel Jesus promises that when he leaves the earth he will not leave us orphaned. Today he promises to send his Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of The Lord had commanded him and took his Wife into his home. Let us learn to accept Each other and Christ in our marriages by Taking part in a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend on June 9-11, 2017, at Elk Grove Village, Il.
