One of our 2 nd grade students, Anahy, didn t feel well and we called her mom to come pick her up early about half hour before class was over. I went to the 4 th grade room to grab her brother, Anthony, so he could go early and their mom wouldn t have to make the trip again. But Anthony didn t want to go. He almost pleaded to stay, and his catechist, Blasina, offered to take him home after class. I know this may seem really small to you perhaps insignificant in the grand scheme of things. But let me tell you it s not. It s actually a big thing. In fact, it s huge. Monsignor has told us of a recent study that showed our children lose a large piece of their faith by the time they are 10. By this time, their religion becomes more of a fairy tale and they lose the childlike faith and trust they have carried until this time. I speak often with our catechists about how to stop this from happening, and we try most anything we can to spark more interest with the children. We try to convince parents of the importance of faith formation in themselves and in their children. And honestly, many times we do not see the fruit of our effort. We tell ourselves that we are planting the seeds, or even just tilling the soil, and that the fruit will be produced later. So this little exchange on Sunday was an affirmation to me, to Monsignor, and to our catechists, that the children really are listening. We know that the Holy Spirit is the true catechist, but it sure is nice to have that extra wink sometimes. So thank you, Anthony and Blasina, for giving us that extra boost. In Christ, Melissa 2.
