Sacrament of Holy Communion - 1 October 2017 Call to Worship - (the congregation s responses are printed in bold.) With nature in its power and beauty, with rain and wind and sunshine, with the ancient rocks and the budding flower, we gather in praise of God. With believers and seekers the whole world wide, with people in every land, with speakers of every language, we gather in praise of God. With the angels and saints in heaven, with those who founded the Scots Kirk here, and with all who have worshipped in it since, we gather in praise of God. Here let heaven and earth embrace; here may God s people find home. Introit : God is my strength (Choir Psalm 121) Welcome followed by Prayer of Approach Praise: Praise, my soul, the King of heaven (MP 560) 1 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to His feet thy tribute bring; ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, who like thee His praise should sing? Praise the everlasting King. 2 Praise Him for His grace and favour to our fathers, in distress; praise Him still the same for ever, slow to chide, and swift to bless.

Glorious in His faithfulness. 3 Father-like He tends and spares us; well our feeble frame He knows; in His hands He gently bears us, rescues us from all our foes. Widely as His mercy flows. 4 Angels, help us to adore Him; ye behold Him face to face; sun and moon, bow down before Him; dwellers all in time and space. Praise with us the God of grace. Children s Message Praise: This little light of mine (JP 258) This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine This little light of mine I'm gonna let it shine Let it shine, let it shine Let it shine Blessing on the Children

Prayer of Confession - ending with the Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. Readings: Philippians 2: 1 13 (p.1179) Imitating Christ s Humility 1 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very natureof a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Do Everything Without Grumbling 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Matthew 21: 23 32 (p.989) The Authority of Jesus Questioned 23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. By what authority are you doing these things? they asked. And who gave you this authority? 24 Jesus replied, I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 25 John s baptism where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or of human origin? They discussed it among

themselves and said, If we say, From heaven, he will ask, Then why didn t you believe him? 26 But if we say, Of human origin we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet. 27 So they answered Jesus, We don t know. Then he said, Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. The Parable of the Two Sons 28 What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, Son, go and work today in the vineyard. 29 I will not, he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. 30 Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, I will, sir, but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did what his father wanted? The first, they answered. Jesus said to them, Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. Praise: We have a gospel to proclaim (MP 728) 1 We have a gospel to proclaim, good news for men in all the earth; the gospel of a saviour s name: we sing His glory, tell His worth. 2 Tell of His birth at Bethlehem, not in a royal house or hall but in a stable dark and dim:

the Word made flesh, a light for all. 3 Tell of His death at Calvary, hated by those He came to save; in lonely suffering on the cross for all He loved, His life He gave. 4 Tell of that glorious Easter morn: empty the tomb, for He was free; He broke the power of death and hell that we might share His victory. 5 Tell of His reign at God s right hand, by all creation glorified; He sends His Spirit on His Church to live for Him, the Lamb who died. 6 Now we rejoice to name Him king: Jesus is Lord of all the earth; this gospel-message we proclaim: we sing His glory, tell His worth. Sermon followed by Affirmation of Faith Affirmation of Faith We believe in God above us, Maker and Sustainer of all life, of sun and moon, of water and earth, of male and female.

We believe in God beside us, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, born of a woman, servant of the poor, tortured and nailed to a tree. A man of compassion, he died forsaken; he descended into the earth to the place of death. On the third day he rose from the tomb; he ascended into heaven to be everywhere present; and his kingdom will come on earth. We believe in God within us, the Holy Spirit of Pentecostal fire, life-giving breath of the church, spirit of healing and forgiveness, source of resurrection and eternal life. Amen. Prayer for Others - Elder Offering & Prayer of Dedication including Prayer for Presbytery

Anthem: Holy, Holy, Holy (Choir) Church News Invitation to the Lord s Table Praise: Broken for me, broken for you 66) (MP Broken for me, broken for you, the body of Jesus broken for you. 1 He offered His body, He poured out His soul, Jesus was broken that we might be whole: Broken for me... 2 Come to My table and with Me dine, eat of My bread and drink of My wine: Broken for me... 3 This is My body given for you, eat it remembering I died for you: Broken for me... 4 This is My blood I shed for you, for your forgiveness, making you new: Broken for me... Sacrament of Holy Communion - Prayer of Thanksgiving beginning with these responses: The Lord be with you and also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God our Maker.

It is right to give our thanks and praise. Later, after the words, singing the song of your eternal greatness: Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might, heaven and earth are fully of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Because you, Gracious God, have been faithful to us, we will be faithful to Jesus. He promised to be with those who met in his name: this we believe. He promised to hear the prayers of faithful people: this we believe. He said that in the communion of bread and wine he would be present to us as we remembered him: this we celebrate. Later, we say together the Agnus Dei: Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, give us your peace. Praise: Let us talents and tongues employ (CH4 673) 1 Let us talents and tongues employ, reaching out with a shout of joy: bread is broken, the wine is poured, Christ is spoken and seen and heard. Refrain:

Jesus lives again, earth can breathe again, pass the word around: loaves abound! 2 Christ is able to make us one, at his table he sets the tone, teaching people to live to bless, love in word and in deed express. [Refrain] 3 Jesus calls us in, sends us out bearing fruit in a world of doubt, gives us love to tell, bread to share. God (Immanuel!) everywhere. [Refrain] Benediction and Three-fold Amen - followed by sung Benediction: Go now in peace, never be afraid, God will go with you each hour of every day. Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true. Know he will guide you in all you do. Go now in love and show you believe. Reach out to others so all the world can see. God will be there watching from above. Go now in peace, in faith and in love.
