(This is less than 5 miles from Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.) He was christened/baptized in Sleepy Hollow Church in Phillipsburg, Westchester, New York. He died at the age of 77 in April 1774 in Sunbury, Northumberland, Pennsylvania. He married Catherine Johnson. Catherine was born in 1706 in New Jersey. She died also in April 1774. They had 11 children. Paulus, Jr. was the third child and third boy. Catherine was 9 years younger than Paulus. They married in 1727 in Westchester County, New York. She was 21 and he was 30. Possible he was the first settler of 21

PAULUS DEWITT, II Paulus DeWitt, Jr. was born March 28, 1727 in Rariton, Hunterdon, New Jersey. He was baptized in Readington Church, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He died in 1774 in Kentucky. He married Catherine Depuy on Dec 10, 1749 in Shawnee, Pennsylvania. Catherine was born in 1725 in Kingston, Ulster, New York. They had 9 children. Their first child was Sara. Peter was the second child he was born in 1753, four years after they were married. She was 28 years old, Paulus was 26. Catherine was 24 when she married and 2 years older. Catherine s father was Johannes Depuy born in 1704 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Catherine s mother was Sarah Van Steenbergen, born on Nov 28, 1703 in Kingston, Ulster Count, New York, USA. Died April 1779, Kingston, Ulster County, New York, USA. Johannes Depuy was the son of Moses DuPuy who was born in 1657 in Paris, Seine, France. He immigrated to the United States, died in 1728 in Rochester, Monroe County, New York. Moses father was Nicholas Du Puy who was born in 1625 in Artois, France. Nicholas immigrated to America and died on Jun 19, 1691 in New York City, New York. Moses mother was Catryntje Renard De Vos who was born in 1640 Flandres, France. Nicholas and Catryntje married in 1654. She was 14 and he was 29. She immigrated with Nicholas to America. Sarah Van Steenbergen was Catherine s mother. Born and died in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Lived to be 76. Paulus was born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey (A) and traveled to Kentucky where he died. About 650 miles. 22

PETER DEWITT Peter DeWitt born July 8, 1753 in Somerville, Sussex, New Jersey. Died in Aug 17, 1834 in West Liberty, Morgan, Kentucky. Married Jane Bray on July 9, 1774 in Hampshire, Virginia. Jane was born on July 9, 1755 in Frederick, Maryland. She died on Jan 19, 1843 in Fayette County Ohio, buried in DeWitt Cemetery, Fayette County, Ohio. Jane s father was Henry Bray, mother was Catherine. Peter and Jane had 5 children. The first Elizabeth was born in 1775 in Clark, Kentucky. The second Martin DeWitt, was born in Washington, Maryland in 1777 and died in 1840 in Texas. In 1782 they were still in Clark, Kentucky where their third child Henry was born. In Clark, Kentucky in 1785. Their last child, Gabriel was born in 1790 in Kentucky. Peter DeWitt served in the Revolutionary War. He had the rank of soldier in the Army. He served in the Eighth Regiment, Virginia. He was in the Continental Army. The following was taken from The Revolutionary Bounty Warrants. Dewitt, Peter Rank: Soldier Service: Army See Papers, 1784 The act of the General Assembly passed on June 22, 1779, which established the Virginia Land Office, also provided for the rewarding of lands promised as bounty for specified Revolutionary War military service. The purpose of the bounty land system was to encourage longer military service. In order to qualify for bounty land, a soldier had to serve at least three (3) years continuously in the State or Continental line. Militia service did not count. Servicemen submitted various documents such as affidavits of commanding officers and fellow soldiers and discharge papers in order to substantiate their service record. When the claim was proved, the Governor s Office issued a certificate to the register of the Land Office authorizing him to issue a warrant. The first warrant was issued in 1782 and the last in 1876 as heirs of warrantees continued to seek lands for additional service. Land awarded as bounty was in the present-day states of Ohio and Kentucky. The papers accumulated as proof of service are now part of the records of the Executive Dept. Office of the Governor (RG#3) and are called Bounty Warrants if approved and Rejected Claims if disapproved. These records 23

They both died in Kentucky. Jane was one of 10 children. Jane s oldest brother, Abraham Bray, died Grayson County, Kentucky, which is where a lot of the Embrys lived and died. I do know that the Bray family were Quakers and some of them came from North Carolina and settled in Indiana. *FROM THE HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY, OHIO: The DeWitt family was one of the first to settle in Fayette County, Ohio. Peter DeWitt came to this county from Kentucky in 1805, purchased one thousand acres of land on Turkey creek and built the first house in Wayne township, a rude log cabin, which is still standing. He fought in the Revolutionary War and later became one of the pioneer settlers of Kentucky. In 1805 he, with his wife, Jane Bray, and family, located in Wayne township, or rather on land which is now within that township. The countv was not organized until 1810 and by that time he had a considerable tract cleared and in cultivation. It is not known how many children Peter DeWitt had, although it is certain that three sons, John, Henry and Gabriel, were the first settlers on the land now comprehended within Fayette county. Each of the three.brothers built a brick house on his farm and all three of the houses are still standing and occupied.
