From Our Pastor... Signs of God s Loving Presence This weekend we celebrate the beautiful feast of Divine Mercy in which we reflect on the richness of God s loving mercy for us and what that means on a daily basis as we recognize how much we need God s help and grace. I encourage you to visit our Divine Mercy Shrine (by St. Joseph statue) and reflect on Jesus pouring out his love upon you. As St. Faustina wrote in her diary about the red and white rays coming from Jesus heart: "The pale ray stands for the Water of Baptism which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood of the Eucharist which is the life of souls.... These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross"(Diary, 299). For me personally, it resonates with my own favorite devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in which Jesus invites us to come to His Heart with our own troubled, questioning, or broken heart. Today we also celebrate with our young children making their First Holy Communion at the 10:30 Mass. May they inspire us adults to be more reverent and faithful to Eucharist, making sure the Sunday Mass is the top priority of every weekend. I also want to encourage you to make time for one Mass during the weekdays as a way to get closer to Jesus in the Eucharist. May God bless you with a Resurrection Spirit in your heart, Fr. Jim Deiters Upcoming Dates to mark on your calendar: 1. Masterworks Concert - here on May 7 2. Sacrament of Confirmation with Bishop Braxton and our youth - Monday, May 15 3. Pentecost Festival - Sunday, June 4 4. Corpus Christi Procession - Sunday, June 18 We extend our loving sympathy to the families of Helen Clayton and Dr. Tom Prosser who died last week. May they rest in the peace and love of Jesus Christ! Dr. Prosser s funeral Mass will be celebrated this Monday at Noon. Everybody s Got a Story! Discover how to share your faith with others. Join us for an evening of fun, food and story-telling, Catholic Style! Thursday, May 11 from 6:30 8:15 p.m. Fellowship Hall Are You Interested in Becoming Catholic? If so, please contact Matt Flynn at matthewflynn5@gmail.com or the parish office. Now is a good time to start since the process can take up to a year (or more, depending on your situation) and the traditional time for adults to be brought into the Catholic Church is Easter. The RCIA process is a path of discernment and conversion that varies based on the person going through it. It can last a while for some people (those very unfamiliar with Catholicism) or be relatively short and simple (those who are already practicing Christians and/or have been around the Catholic Church a long time), or it may be somewhere in between. If you have been thinking about it, contact Matt to find out how!! Tuesday Night Bible Study Looking to learn more about Scripture? The Tuesday Night Bible Study group will be starting a new nine week segment on the Book of Exodus on May 23 that will go until July 25. Meetings are every Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30/9:00. The cost for materials is $20, and the registration deadline is May 9. Call the parish office 632-3562 to register. Daily Mass, Readings and Reflections Looking for an easy way to spend time in daily prayer with the Word of God? Contact parishioner Tom Grimmig to receive daily emails with Mass readings and reflections at tom.grimmig@charter.com. Were you aware we have Mass during the week on Monday at Noon and Tuesday and Friday at 7:30 a.m.? You are always welcome to attend! Watch the bulletin for summer schedule. Voca on Corner In today s Gospel, we hear Thomas making the most complete affirma on of Christ s nature to be found on the lips of anyone in the gospel, My Lord and my God. Just as Jesus strengthened Thomas faith, He wants to renew faith in following our own voca on. We need to be diligent and invite others to consider a life of service a life of being a priest or religious. Divine Mercy Sunday St. Clare Church Sunday, April 23 from 1:30 3:30 p.m. Featuring the Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, Adoration, Confession and a relic of St. Faustina Divine Mercy Materials are available in the Gathering Space. By now you have probably no ced our colorful paschal candle, located by the bap smal font. The candle is en tled Apis Mater, and was designed, hand carved, and painted by Marklin Candle Design in New Hampshire. Fr. Jim and I chose this non-tradi onal design to draw a en on to this very important liturgical object. The colorful hexagons represent the bee s honeycomb, which is integral in the making of beeswax candles. The Exsultet the great chant proclaimed at the beginning of the Easter Vigil praises the bee whose work builds the precious torch of the Paschal candle. Apis Mater, literally translated "Mother Bee, shines with the joy of the community life, the discipline of hard work, and the love concealed in sacrifice. The candle is a symbol of sacrifice wax consumed to produce light. It s for the sake of the flame that a candle exists. It s appropriate that the Paschal Candle reminds us of Christ, who gave His life that we might have eternal light. In the 4th century, St. John Chrysostom wrote, The bee is more honored than other animals, not because she labors, but because she labors for others. While some na ve bees are solitary, the honeybee is not. It survives only in a colony. It is the role-model of communal living. Tasks are undertaken by all, food is held in common, and the survival of the colony supersedes any individual s interest. The female bee loses her life if she s ngs another out of defense. During the winter months, bees do not hibernate. Rather, they cluster around the queen and thermo-regulate the temperature of the colony. A bee will not survive apart from the cluster. These elements of sacrifice and dependence on community make the bee a model for our lives as Chris ans. Through Apis Mater, we pay tribute to this most venerable part of God s crea on.
