Sir David Willcocks (1919 2015) This evening s Carol Service pays tribute to the late Sir David Willcocks who died, aged 95, in September of this year. Sir David was the most influential choirmaster of his generation, spending 17 years as director of music at King s College, Cambridge, and 38 years in charge of the Bach Choir. Every note he conducted had to be articulated with precision and every phrase expressed with clarity. Nowhere is this more exemplified than in the annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols from King s, with which Willcocks was indelibly connected. He edited the Carols for Choirs books which have become the standard carol resource for choirs throughout the world and his arrangements of descants to carols such as O Come, All Ye Faithful and Hark! the Herald Angels Sing have become a traditional part of many people s Christmas. A gentle and unassuming man, I had the privilege of meeting and singing with him on a number of occasions. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on not least in his carol arrangements, a number of which we use in our service tonight. Tears and smiles like us he knew; Mary was that mother mild, And he feeleth for our sadness, Jesus Christ her little child. And he shareth in our gladness. Choir: 2. He came down to earth from heaven 5. And our eyes at last shall see him, Who is God and Lord of all, Through his own redeeming love And his shelter was a stable, For that Child so dear and gentle And his cradle was a stall. Is our Lord in heaven above; With the poor and mean and lowly And he leads his children on Lived on earth our Saviour holy. To the place where he is gone. All: 3.
